No, I meant I don't understand what you want.

Do you have a full driver's licence?
Why do you want a letter?

    Please don’t drive.

My license expires next month and if restrictions are ever lifted i will need to go abroad.
I felt the time to ask was now before it expires, i am surprised they cannot continue as normal as the NCT are testing.
The wait on the phone line is an hour which is crazy as all public servants are working as per normal i am told...

I'm not sure why you can't wait on the phone for an hour but your licence will have automatically been extended as per https://www.ndls.ie/booking-service.html (whether that is sufficient abroad, I don't know)
Driving Licences that expire from 01 September 2020 to 30 June 2021 will be automatically extended by 10 months in total.

Apparently most of the NDLS centres are open: https://www.ndls.ie/help/faq.html#are-all-ndls-offices-open
NDLS centres are open countrywide with the exception of Clifden and Belmullet NDLS centres. You must book an appointment to attend one of the NDLS offices here. Due to reduced demand there may be limited opening hours in some NDLS centres.

Once you have mygov.ie you can renew online once not out of date longer then 3 months

If you are an essential worker then you can renew already. We are dropping several levels in 2 weeks so they will be open for non essential workers then.

    https://www.ndls.ie/help/faq.html#driving-licences

The NDLS employees aren't public servants. A one hour wait is definitely not normal when public servants are working normally, the phone usually just rings out or you get through to a full mail box.

Do you think a department who asks a customer to wait on-hold for an hour to ask a simple question can be taken seriously??
So i decide to ask here and get a reply in a couple of mins... figure it out as people here just passin time....

I was not aware NDLS were a private company, they may be like Applus.
I still think the driving license is responsibility of Government as it is issued by government.
I was of the opinion that all of these people were working from home and fulfilling all duties except for front-line stuff.
I believe there are some problems in passport service as well.
It may be worth while diverting some of calls like mine to a call centre if offices are closed...
Anyway as long as i get the letter all be OK....
I was not asking to renew as i have already being advised on-line that license has been extended... Just want this in writing...

NDLS is not a company, it's a service provided by the RSA, contracted out to three different companies (customer service, application processing a card issue are all performed by separate companies).

Societe Generale de Surveillance SA is the company responsible for public enquiries on behalf of the NDLS.

Strictly speaking, the licences are not issued by the Government, they are issued on behalf of an authority (the RSA) by Credit Card Systems Ireland.

Things are different from normal and I don't believe that the NDLS or any company where many staff are working from home claim that things are back to usual despite your claim that "all public servants are working as per normal".
Try and call Virgin Media for example and let us know how you get on!
Have you emailed them your query? This way you would get a response back in writing!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 42 conndeal

You will not get a letter informing you of the extension. I was able to input my licence number somewhere on the NLDS website and get my new renewal date. I printed off that page and kept it with my licence until I got it renewed last year.

You make a very valid point... ie the last time i called Vodafone who are a private company (like Virgin) i got through to a call center in Cairo in a couple of mins and was sorted.
Its not my claim that public service is normal but i did not hear of any lay-offs or people on Covid payment, i personally know many working from home doing their normal duties.
There is no email option on the website to ask a general question which is the sole reason i needed to ask here...

The print-off would not confirm that your lapsed license is valid to drive which is the reason i want to have the letter to confirm extension...

Be careful if using your license to drive abroad. Other jurisdictions may not recognise it as being extended if the expiry date has passed.

I highly doubt you are going to get an official letter even if you get through to someone to ask them for it.

Make an appointment with NDLS and get your licence renewed if it is close to expiry. They state that the service is only open for essential workers but I have read on here from several posters that the appointment will still be honoured regardless.

Biko is one of the bosses here and he said everyone with valid license get a letter extending the license valid date, i kinda thought what he said be correct as the mods usually know these things.
I was kinda expecting someone would say they got a letter stating whatever.

Your licence is valid in Ireland, the extension is similar to the learners permit in that it's only valid in the country of issue. In any other country the hire company or police will not recognise any letter as they've no way to verify it, the old paper licences used to get strange looks in some countries a letter won't be entertained.

Businesses are opening in the next few weeks so the NDLS will be back to letting non essential people in, we aren't going to be allowed leave the country for several months so you'll have plenty of time to get your licence renewed before you travel.

What do you think Biko said?

Biko said "people who have driving licenses will get a letter"
I do have a current driving license for the next 2 weeks.
Well considering my query was about driving license and the reply was almost immediate i think what he meant was i would ne getting a letter to say it had being extended for a period.
I am sure he can clarify if the letter was about something else.
The testing centres are open and i cannot understand why people cannot get a valid license...

NDLS at the moment is a shambles, I am still waiting for a response to a query about renewal of a licence that was sent in January. The system issued me a new licence, but they didn't take the expiry date of the old licence into consideration, which as far as I know is wrong, but so far, I've had an acknowledgement, asking for more information, after a month, and since then, silence. As I have a renewal licence, it's not a show stopper, but they clearly have massive problems wth their IT and related systems, given they don't know their own rules.

It now looks like the new licence that came into force at the beginning of the month will be extended, and last longer than the date of expiry on it, but I haven't checked in detail, it can wait until things get back to some sort of normal, whenever that is.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

To be fair, any companies I've phoned in the last year have been much better. Talking to someone WFH is so much clearer without the 100 other phonecalls being shouted in the background.

Today's thread is brought to you by the word "Cromulent" :D

There seems to be some confusion from the OP about the "?" at the end of your statement in relation to receiving a letter..... :)

@OP: Boards is not somewhere to come to get legal advice or even something that could be construed as legally binding, even if that advice is coming from a Moderator of the site.

As has been said, driving licence expiries were extended for a period of time due to NDLS capacity being restricted to essential workers only. The same thing was done for the NCT where expiry dates were extended by a few months while it was closed. In neither case, were letters sent to anyone to give them something legally binding, it was just taken as fact within the country as it had been announced in the media and also on the relevant websites/social media.

These extensions do not have to be recognised outside of the country as the certificate/licence you have contains the original expiry date, and this is something that an out of state authority will go by.

If you have 2 weeks left on your licence (including the extension that was given), then you should still be able to get an appointment with NDLS to renew it. Even better, if you have a PSC (Public Services Card), you may be able to renew your licence online without stepping foot outside of your home.

Luck should have nothing to do with it, this is the license section and it is not closed, the people are not doing the job they are paid to do,its as simple as that
Its crazy that all civil service are afaik working as normal except for front-line. Yet NDLS are neither taking calls or answering emails.

Right - it's pointless advising you. You would rather sit at your laptop and wait for a letter that you probably will never get than arrange an appointment. You then give out that people aren't bending over backwards for you whilst they work from home

Its silly stuff. i know loads of people working as normal from home, i was saying to someone awhile ago and she is working normal 9 to 5 from home.

Nobody on here is going to give you any other answer than the ones you have had.
Instead of firing off an email to NDLS looking for a letter that may not come, just book a renewal appointment with them. The offices are open and taking appointments so you are only wasting whatever time you have left on your licence by not doing this. Once you are in the office at your appointed time, you can complain about the service and speak to a manager/supervisor if you wish.
I understand you're frustrated by this process but, at this stage, anything other than doing the above is just a circular argument and you will get nowhere.

It seems this is the accepted norm for this country that if a person asks a question they are a whinger.
The system as is is clearly broken. I am not a complainer but if a thing is not working it needs someone to fix it.

I never thought of that, the system changed since my last license issued and i assumed that i cannot renew on-line as i am aware i need to attend.
    Renewing on-line be perfect solution.
I was chatting a friend today who works for the Council and she told me the reason that it was taken away from Council was to make more efficient... (not my experience)
So do you think i can do online....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,499 ✭✭✭✭Alun

To renew online you need a verified MyGovId, and to get one of those you need a PSC (Public Services Card). To get a PSC you have to attend a centre anyway to fill in the forms and have a photo taken etc. so unless you already have one, it's easier to just go to an NDLS centre.

They operate on behalf of the government in issuing licences.

If you are feeling so passionate about the bad service, why not don a face covering and walk in to one of the NDLS centers? The addresses of them are online and you would get an answer pretty quick then.

I found this in the FAQ on ndls site
Can I drive a truck for commercial use and travel across the EU with the expired licence where it qualified for an extension due to the change in legislation?

EU countries will recognise a driving licence whose period of validity has expired up to the end of the extension period granted by the issuing Member State. It should be noted that various other EU countries also undertook measures around the extension of validity periods. Responsibility for ensuring the validity of your driving licence is that of every individual driver. Please check the expiry date and earliest renewal date of your driving licence on our expiry date calculator here and renew as required.

If you can drive a truck with an expired licence surely it’s the same for a car?
