Why does laptop screen display look so basic?

Have a laptop where the screen looks terrible.

It's mostly white with very few filled borders or panes.

Simplest example I can give is the Google search screen.

Normal laptop on left, offending laptop on right.
I have compared display settings on both and can't see why the one on the right looks the way it does.

    Anyone any ideas?

One of those is running Win10 Home and the other Pro I think based on the system tray colour; but the Google background screen is not a PC setting.

Ok, so it's getting no better unless the OS is upgraded?

When the laptop is in general use, nearly everything is white! Makes for difficult reading.

Update: OH has told me that the laptop used to display like the one on the left.

open Chrome, goto Settings, Appearance, top of this page chose Theme (little box with arrow) brings you to Google web store where you can choose a theme.

Could be be some accessibility/high contrast settings that have been set?

    Thanks.

I done that, and all it really did was colour the tabs.

I just opened BBC.co.uk/news on both laptops and again you can see the difference.

It's not a massive difference, but the fact that that red pane is missing on the right is a big thing I think.
On some websites with a lot of panes like this coloured, they are white on the laptop on the right.
I will try to get an example that doesn't have personal info on it, and post later.

    Reset your windows color settings.

I doubt they were ever changed.
This is the OHs work laptop, she wouldn't be going changing such things.

    How do you reset them?

The taskbar on the work one looks like the windows light theme. I think this was only introduced on a recent version of Windows 10. If you have a look under Settings > Personalisation > Colours, there should be light and dark options. What was the old default would be equivalent to light for apps and dark for Windows.

You forgot a word at the end of the sentence: intentionally.

Bad laptop has the High Contrast setting switched on. Settings => Ease Of Access => High Contrast, change slider to off. You can also just do "Left Shift + Left Alt + PrtScreen"

When I open Chrome there's a little "Customise" button in the bottom right. Lets you change the background. See screenshots below.

Then bbc website shows up white in the uk and red outside the uk. Is the one on the right connected to a uk vpn by any chance.

Not correct, the BBC News page uses red for both the UK and International sites

It's definitely the high contrast setting. High contrast on:

    High contrast off (same computer):

Many thanks for the replies, laptop at work so can't change it tonight, but will get it changed over the next day or two.
I switched HIGH CONTRAST on on the left laptop, and it looks same as the 'bad' one, so thats it 28064212. Cheers.
