I tried some tonight, first time in years, and it's fcuking horrible, bread does nothing for it, and i'd like to speak to a boardsie who likes it so we can find out what the error is in your taste buds.

There is nothing nice or appealing about it on any level.

How can anyone consume this toxic tasting sludge pile?

How does it feel to be so wrong about something that you have to start your own thread about it, because there isn't any other thread that that your wrong opinion could go into, because no one else is as wrong as you?

It can't be as bad as getting a Vegemite sandwich from Jean-Claude Van Damme ?

Can I ask - do you Twiglet ?

Personally a slice or processed white bread toast, with Laughing cow spread liberally and toped with a good smear of Marmite is heaven. Looks like ****e but is nectar..

Had it once. Thought it was grand, could take it or leave it.

I still don't know what Dave Gorman thinks about it, even after this...

Growing up, my Mother tried giving us that, horrible stuff.
The jar was thrown in the bin that night.

My Australian cousin brought me a gift of a jar of Vegemite when she came to visit last year. I don't think she likes me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,634 ✭✭✭✭Graces7

I think many folk spread it too thick. Just a "mere smear" is all you need, atop the butter. A jar lasts a lifetime if used properly. Else it is horrible!

You know some marmite toast would be grand right now...

Not in any way. It’s bitter and salty. Very strong flavour, so as Graces7 said, less is more. There’s a Marmite Peanut Butter that’s also pretty good, although I don’t think they put enough Marmite in it.

For some reason people always mention Bovril when Marmite comes up, but aside from the colour and shape of the jar, they have nothing in common.

I grew up on Vegemite sandwiches. Over here I can get it, but not easily. I actually prefer the Tesco brand "Yeast Extract" over Marmite.
If you're new at Vegemite/Marmite/etc, here's the deal: plenty of butter and only thinly spread it. It's not Nutella.
I got vegemite on toast at a coffee shop in Brisbane and the girl in the kitchen had just arrived from Ireland. She spread it on half an inch thick.
Oh, Vegemite brought out a mic of Vegemite/Cream Cheese - it was delicious, dunno if it's still there or not.

I've never had Vegemite, but have tried the NZ version of marmite which I thought was horrible, it was quite sweet and sickly. It's also made by a rather oddly named company called Sanitarium.

I've got a couple of jars of the Tesco version as the last time I tried to buy marmite they were out of it. It's pretty much the same taste wise, but a good bit runnier. Makes it a bit easier to spread through.

Vegimite is the bomb on hot buttered toast with a bit of cheese.

    mmmmmm! Yes please!

    Vegemite fan here too.
Wouldn't go near that British Marmite muck though (even if it is a by-product of beer and was invented by a German).

Ah, summers camping by the coast with marmite on bread with mature cheese. Yummy!
Don't use too much OP, less is more.
    And don't forget butter!

Fantastic in chillis or other dark dishes to give a kick, you won't actually taste the marmite flavour itself at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,091 ✭✭✭Hyperbollix

Disgusting stuff. It was as if I'd gone to the garage, found a rusty old tin of paint and spread it on some toast for my breakfast. Didn't even taste like it was supposed to be consumed by a human.

Use it the same way too. Great in small doses. That kick is umami flavor, I believe?

Nah really thick. I eat a large jar of it a week. Marmite on the toast first nice and thick then a good layer of butter on top. The other way around and you end up moving the butter around too much when you put the Marmite on.

Wake me up when it's all over.

I once won a lifetimes supply of marmite. The jar I won is still 99% full.

Its quite nice by on its own by the spoonful.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Love marmite. Thinly spread on buttered bread, or toast even better. Feels good for me too (and favourite first food after feeling unwell, and speeds recovery, as I discovered as a child before getting my sea-legs). Haven't tried Vegemite, but don't like supermarkets' own Marmite imitations. Also like Bovril (eaten the same way, but a very different animal). Have to confess to being a Brit, though!

I love Bovril as a hot drink; and a thin trace of Marmite on hot buttered toast is a most sustaining snack:

-- but Vegemite is Vile. It's like either of the above crossed with raw cabbage juice.

Worst thing I have ever seen in my entire life was a bar of Dairy Milk chocolate with Vegemite filling.

This was in Brisbane, on the shelf in a corner shop. Gruesome.

    F*ck marmite.

    Bovril is the sh1t

I feel the same way about Guinness, dunno how anyone can drink it. Each to their own I suppose.
