The law may seem bonkers OP but it is their law, and Sharia at that.

A country has laws and enforces them.
    We should be jealous.

We all have an obligation to obey the laws of other countries while there.

It seems very extreme to us, but we all know that Dubai is not a place to act by Western standards.

Absolute backward culture and laws, but in this case I've zero sympathy for the organiser and these women.

Takes a special kind of stupid to blatantly break the law over there.

Sure no one would mind if you wandered the streets of Dubai shouting Allahu Akbar.
Do it in the US and you might get a cop kneeling on your neck.

Different countries have different laws and standards. It's important to stay informed.

I agree it's a stupid law, but it's not as stupid as the people who knowingly broke it. Like seriously, who parades around in the nip in a Muslim country knowing that westerners have spent time in jail there for simply kissing in public? Zero sympathy for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,285 ✭✭✭✭Larbre34

The Emirates is an interesting place to spend time. A confluence of the new World and the old, the liberal and the conservative, the judeao-christian and the islamic.

The authorities understand that the large expat community, western community included, need to be accommodated in order to bring certain expertise and services to the big cities.

That involves turning a blind eye to certain things, permitting the limited sale of alcohol, living and let live as regards what goes on behind closed doors (no less for their own non practising muslim Arabs I might add).

The flip side to that is, expats can live an enjoyable and an indulgent and indeed a lucrative life, so long as they respect those boundaries.

But, anyone who forgets where they are, even for a second, is a fool.

Some of it may be backward but Id never feel unsafe there or see junkies lying about.
    Alcohol very expensive though.

    How comfortable are Dubai prisons?

I fell asleep earlier while playing hide and go seek with a 3yo. Children are exhausting. I bet you could get a lot done in a dubai prison, if you just had a desk and lamp. Could write a book, get that PhD by correspondence. I wouldn't dismiss it.

Between naked models and recent stories of sex tourism Dubai really is getting a name for itself atm ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,975 ✭✭✭✭whisky_galore

Right up there with flashing bags of cannabis in front of Thai airport security in terms of stupid.
    Their country, their laws.

Well OP I think if a woman strutted around in her pelt in most countries outside of a designated area, she would at least get a warning and told to cover up, no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,045 ✭✭✭martinedwards

    No sympathy.

Some countries are well know for strick attitudes to public displays of a salacious nature.

    Special kind of stupid

Dubai is a place where women are jailed and given corporal punishment for reporting being raped. You can be arrested for kissing in public. But if you looked at it on instagram, you'd think it was the party capital of the world.

A few hundred miles away across the Persian gulf scores of women are serving decades long sentences in hell hole prisons in Iran for the crime of simply not wearing a scarf on their head. Their lives are taken from them - they will never be the same after years in these places. Somehow that exercises me multitudes of times more than this line of arses, but yet I hardly see fcuk all about it from activists or social commentators of any stripe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,440 ✭✭✭✭Collie D

Genuinely do not get the appeal of this place.

I’d imagine there’s good money for the nurses and teachers who end up working there. Do a couple of years and then come home with a few quid saved. Fair enough.

But as a holiday destination? No thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,551 ✭✭✭SeaFields

As far as I recall, they would face potentially the same sentence in Ireland for that sort of offence?

If you can stomach your holiday in Dubai being had on the back of slave labour and countless human rights violations, I've no sympathy for you if you end up receiving some medieval punishment for disrespecting the locals medieval superstitions.

The ultimate whataboutary here. Iran has its problems but is better than US ally Saudi Arabia for sure.

Dubai is complex, as someone said, liberal in parts but it is still Islamic.

I think outdoors was implied in my question. So in Ireland it’s your own house ( but that’s true everywhere) and beasty’s back garden.

Perhaps there should be jail terms in Ireland for criminal misuse of "there".

Whole thing was a stage managed publicity stunt for something. Like a bunch of random good looking Russian and Ukranian wans are going to just rock up in Dubai to get naked on a balcony. Whoever was behind it got the result they were looking for.

    This land is your land
    This land is my land
    From the naked buttocks
    To the palm tree islands
    From the hotel balconies
    To the Dubai dungeons
This land was made for you and me

But if we don't know what it was for it wasn't exactly successful, was it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,219 ✭✭✭✭biko

They must have known it would not be ok to show themselves naked, even on a balcony 20 floors up.
Backwards as Muslim laws may be, it is their country and we need to adhere to their laws while in their country.

Apart from tribal communities, where can people walk around naked in public?

Should public nudity be legal? What are people's opinions? Does the "my body, my choice" argument apply to public nudity?

It depends on how attractive they are. Ugly people should be forced to cover themselves from head to toe despite the weather and attractive people should be encouraged to wear as few clothes as possible.
