GTX 1080 ti Problem

I’m after picking up a second hand 1080 ti. The install was straightforward.
The FPS were way down, about 10 or less. I put it through the Time Spy test and it’s only clocking up to about 130 mhz.
I’ve seen the watts up to 400w.
My PSU is a bronze 650W.

I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them and it still won’t go any higher.

I’m not the most experienced at this, so it could be something simple.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

What card did you have installed before? Try DDU to completely remove any old drivers and reinstall the new ones.

Full system specs would be nice including PSU brand and model. The 1080ti is a power hungry card. If the PSU is junk it might be the problem.

What PCIE slot did you install it to? It should be in the top slot closest to the CPU. Also try setting "PCIE speed" in bios to gen 3. Also make sure all power cables are connected properly.

After trying all that if it's still a problem try the card in another system if possible. If it's still a problem it's most likely the card.

It is possible it's an ex-mining card with a custom BIOS though.

    Contact the seller?

    Thanks for the replies.

    System is

    Gigabyte X470 Aorus Ultra Gaming
    Ryzen 5 3600X
    EVGA 650w bronze PSU
    Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB Kit (2 x 8GB), DDR4, 3200MHz (PC4-25600), CL16,
The GPU is a Geforce 1080 ti Founders Edition

I have it in the top slot. I had a RX 5600XT in it a few weeks ago and I just took out a GTX 1650 today.

I asked him about it and he said it hadn't being overclocked or anything, so I doubt it was used for mining.

I'm going to try to install the new bios.

    Is the 16GB RAM DDR3 or DDR4?

aS BLOODBATH stated above, remove graphic drivers using DDU in safe mode
then reinstall the latest geforce drivers
then do a benchtest on GPU
The last resort ever is flashing the GPU bios

I did the DDU and cleaned it for a new GPU install. Installed the new drivers again.
    I haven't done a flash yet.

On speccy this was on the end of the graphics section

Count of performance levels : 1
    Level 1 - "Perf Level 0"
    GPU Clock 139 MHz
    Shader Clock 405 MHz

Edit: my bios version on speccy is the same as the one on techpowerup.com

What temps is the card running at? Is the fan actually spinning up?

Yea the fan is running, temps are in the 30s, very low but the card isn’t doing enough to generate heat I guess.

Going by what I saw on specy, it looks like it’s on a setting with very low GPU clock of 139 MHz

    Download & run MSI Afterburner.

Would be good to know what the power limit/core clocks are at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 943 ✭✭✭GHOST MGG

Open nvidia control panel>Manage 3D settings>Set power management mode to Optimal power and reboot It could also be a psu gpu cable problem also...139mhz is the standard speed the 1*** series powers down to when idle, but if the clockspeed does not rise whilst under load it could be a faulty cable or supply..do you have a spare 2x 8pin pci E connector?

I had the optimal selected and it was showing power from 200 to 400w on the msi afterburner. That makes me think it’s getting enough power.
I only used the 8 pin before, so this is the first time using the 8 + 6 pin together.
It’s a modular psu, so I’ve no spare.

The clock speed just sits at 139 MHz no matter what.

If I'm understanding this video (admittedly ****ty, auto-translated from Portugese) correctly, you might've been sold a lemon with a broken VRM phase.

Have you used the card for mining?

Maybe it's just been pushed too hard?

    I think so to.
It’s a pity because it was one of the reasonably overpriced cards lol

How long did it work fine for?

Thanks everyone, I’m bringing it back.

Anyone got a 1080ti or better for sale 😀

Dodgey, absolutely no way the seller didn't know about it.

out of interest, how would mining damage a gpu? im thinking of setting my 1080ti up for ethereum while im not using it for gaming

Shorter lifespan in theory, as you're running it more. But you can offset that by undervolting it and making sure there's plenty of cooling etc.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

I brought it back to the seller and there was no problem getting money back, he was sound.

Picked up another 1080ti plugged it in and it works perfect. A 9152 on the Time Spy test without doing anything to it. Not bad.

Happy days glad to hear you got sorted and it wasn't a case of someone just pulling a fast one.

Thankfully the original seller wasn't a total ass,was fully expecting a post saying they wouldn't reply:P

    Gl with the new card:)

There's nothing wrong with mining cards. GPU's and CPU's are designed to run for many years at 100% load if necessary.

I'd be more worried about something that was overclocked and overvolted running at high temps than an optimised mining card.

Yeah I meant the temperatures within the card, particularly the newest Nvidia cards have some very high temps during mining. I know of one PNY 3090 that definitely over heated and caused damage.

well set my 1080ti up for mining while not in use (i feel horrible and dirty :D), temps sit between 55 - 60 with fans set to 75%, ive core at +65 and mem at +300, not going to push that anymore as the card will be running at 100% and i need it primarily for gaming.

1st i would suggest getting back in contact with the seller if possible . Sounds to me as if a resistor or capacitor is blown . 650W shoult be more than enough for that GPU . TO me its a physical issue with the GPU itself . So unless you are comfortable with diagnosing whats blown on the card i think you should return it

You're 5 days too late, they returned it and go the money back and bought another working card

Mods can lock this if they want to. I got sorted with another card, all good.

    Thanks for everyone’s help.
