Say something nice about U2 and/or Bono

The best Irish band by a landslide. One of the best bands the world has ever had. U2 have about 50 songs that will still be played in 50 years time. Not many bands in the world can say that. Beatles, stones?

One of the best live touring bands the world has ever seen. The numbers don't lie. Always pushing boundaries in how they put on a show. The stage set ups for every tour are always amazing and innovative. A band that excels on a live venue

Bono has done more for raising money and bringing awareness to serious issues, than your average rock star.

Bono is one of the most famous people on the planet, and he literally kept Ireland on the map when they were rising as a band in the 80s. He was pretty much an Irish ambassador, he is clearly a proud Irish person. (who pays his taxes in Ireland). Its the company u2 that "don't pay their taxes"

Bono doesn't have a fake American accent like alot of affluent people in Ireland have, who have never been to America

Bono is a very underrated rock vocalist. In all the articles and discussions about U2, Bono's singing ability is very rarely mentioned.

My mam isn't "down with the kids" in terms of music.
She thinks his name is Bonio.
    Is that nice enough?

Since when does Bono pay his tax in Ireland? I thought he was officially Dutch now and pays their taxrates on his squillions.

In fairness they did great songs & concerts in the 90’s but a lot of people hold that against them. Assuming its true about the Dutch tax regime as its been repeated so often.

U2 which is a business (that has lawyers, accountants etc) moved their operations to Netherlands in 2006 I think . Most businesses like to cut costs !

Bono is an individual separate from u2 who pays all his taxes that are due in Ireland!

Not since Bono stopped clapping his hands.

No but Bono started murdering his own songs there a few years ago. Great band in their day even into the early noughties but it was really time to give it up a good while ago

I've seen Larry & family quite a few times aboard my Ryanair flight, and on one occasion with Adam Clayton in the posh priority queue.

They still sold out Croker at e200 a ticket a few years ago. Back in the day, when it was normal for 60,000 people to ‘meet’. :(

PS I know U2 or whatever their tax name is is a business - its still registered along with them as a dutch concession - and he’s legally non resident in Ireland to qualify - meaning he has to spend 100 days a year out of the country or whatever the rule is. Is that still his tax situation? Or is now paying full tax on all his wealth and businesses here in Ireland - like Michael O’Leary does?

    ( M’OL DOES.)

Bono is a nice singer with a great vocal range. Edge is a great guitarist. They have been a hard working band over the years. Multi millions made by the early 90s but still did the grind of touring - when there was an easy living to be made in record sales only.

I'll never forget when I first got into U2, it was the summer of 1993, I was 15 and my Dad borrowed a tape of Achtung Baby from a colleague and had it on in his car, I had liked some songs I'd hear from Joshua Tree on radio or MTV but never got really "into" them.

I couldn't believe this album - especially Who's gonna ride your wild horses, it just hit me, and I absolutely loved it...
shortly after I got the CD of Achtung Baby and played it till the songs were worn off the disc! :D

Over the next few months I saved up pocket money and bought Zooropa, then got Joshua Tree, Rattle + Hum, Unforgettable Fire ... I loved them all but Achtung Baby would always have a special place in my heart - although can understand why most people's favourite is Joshua Tree..

Years later in 1997 I got POP, this took my awhile to get into but I really got into it and loved it, it's not one I really listen to anymore though, it's like I outgrew it - the rest of them yes ... love them.

Don't like any of their stuff from this century, the odd song is OK ... but albums overall have been very weak - pity.

Love Bono's choir voice and him as a performer, I've never seen them live, but after this ****show pandemic, they will have a huge tour I am sure of that and I plan on going to multiple shows.

    Love these performances

U2 were the single uniting subject when I was in the Rathcairn gaeltacht. Going by the gigantic drawn poster on the main hall of aras pobal.
Other than we singing amhran na bfhiann every morning.
And doing the rest of the ladranach activities every day.

Yeah I have the best of 1980. - 1990 cd collection.
Also have the all that you can leave behind and discotheque.

    So yeah I'm a sucker...

    No more cd purchased though.

Don't care for U2 any more.

Considering the amount of time they have been around, there's very little scandal around them.

Bono does more good than bad in the world.

One of things he never gets credit for is he makes it easy when I'm trying to explain the Irish trait of bedgrudery to foreign friends or abroad.

Agreed, I've long thought it's one of their standout live performances, and of course it's not even their own song, but Red Hill Mining Town (great track) was influenced by it.

Came across some footage of them playing in the States in 1983 recently and it reminded me how much i liked their first 3 albums. Was a fan then for a bit.

I was never a fan of their music, not my cuppa when I was younger I liked Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, ACDC and few others. Lived in NY for a few years and my wife got a chance of two tickets to see them in Madison square gardens, the seats were outstanding right up at the stage and the tickets were for free so we said what the heck we aren't fans but we'll go anyway. So here's my nice thing that ill say about them, they put on one hell of a show live, they give the fans exactly what they want and even though I'm not a fan there is no denying they are a seriously talented group of lads.

From day one the bands royalties were split evenly 4 ways between all band members, even though Bono would legally be entitled to the lions share

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,094 ✭✭✭.anon.

Sunday Bloody Sunday. What a great song. It really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday, doesn't it? You wake up in the morning, you've got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running round, you've got to mow the lawn, wash the car, and you think "Sunday, bloody Sunday!"

I've never considered myself a big fan, but War and the Joshua Tree are great albums. And the original version of The Sweetest Thing is an underrated song.

I think it was a equal 5 way split with Paul McGuinness.
