Last year I didn't pre order any straws. I just used whatever fresh straws the ai man had on the day. Worked well. Also used up the straws that were in the can from the last few years. We are the first call in ths morning so get the pick of the fresh bulls. Normally the top bulls they have fresh

    S3134 Stanton Applicable
    FR4368 Westcoast Yamaska
    S3579 Progenesis Wimbledon

Won't go too far wrong with any of them I reckon. Will use OEO, a polled lim on anything I don't fancy before the whitehead bull takes over.

Oh my God... and you were one of the poster boys for the high ebi system 10 short years ago

Miss the old three letter code system, it gave some clue of the bulls name. I can remember bulls names and codes from twenty years ago easier than those used to breed the heifer calves being born today.

He seen the light eventually, glanbia suppliers who haven't a good reference peak milk built up are going to have to go ayr/autumn calving to get around the new pricing system coming in, your high ebi bulls wont get a look in for these systems

Thanks for remembering me !!,I saw the light hadn’t much issue with it up to 2/3 years ago big drop off in quality since ,too much chopping and changing with figures ,too much duds and sub standard stock sucked size ,milk and kgms out of stock couldn’t give 2 ****es about overall ebi now

No they won't, you'll be allowed 3% over your previous may and June's milk and you'll get a lesser price for extra milk over that
I won't be jumping back to autumn calving any way
Other option is to stay at the cow numbers you're at, plenty will do as big expansion is finished on most existing farms imo

The base change has to be done to reflect the improvement in the base cow

Whats the av lactation of your herd? Is it lower than what it was 5 years ago?

Bigger cows will need more feeding too, will they suit your current system of milk production

I need to buy two bulls this year, usually 2 AA, but I think il go for one Holstein. Il try and find a bull with good records. Is it a bit mad. I gave 1300 euros for ai last year. Between bull calves and repeats il be lucky to have 7 heifers

i doubt you will get a good bull for 1300 euros. But if your in the market, i always admired the bulls at the IHFA Premier Bull Show. It be held at Nenagh Livestock Mart and online on Wednesday 31st March 2021.

For 1300 he might pick up a lad like the one in the picture- his dam does nearly 1000kg of milk solids a year and is classified ex- plus 2 on type then again maybe you might need another 0 behind that

So glad I never went down that extreme EBI road. All you had to do was have one look at their liners to see what rubbish they are. All falling off the page on the wrong side was never going to work long term.

I buy a fr bull every other year €1200 delivered. He has ads on donedeal . Been buying off him for a good while now. He gives you the tags of a few bulls, do an inbreeding check on icbf and pick what you want. I have bought the expensive lads before that are supposed to do x,y and z and never deliver.

Ya Sher I've been using bulls positive for fat and protein for 20 years. I have to pike the milk out of the tank in to lorry at this stage. Paper never refused ink. My montbelliarde cow is fourteen this year, 12 Feb born calves, ebi of -6. Surely she deserved a few points for fertility

My herd fertility figures are good. The lad I buy off is no show off. You look up the bulls and pick what you want, genuine and not robbing anyone either.

Any of ye bothering with a pack of test bulls anymore? Price gone up to 12.50 I think for em. Haven't looked yet at what I'll be getting for the main batch, new run at the end of the month I think.
WWS fella called today, any of ye use bulls from them?
Want to work on the components mainly. Was at 3.65p, I think, and 4.1bf last year. Solids crashed in March last year have managed to hold em this year so far but cows in again at night, should have kept em in today as well, but hoping to keep some bit of grass in the diet.

A genomic bull is a test bull dressed up as something it's not and sold for much more than its worth. IMO. pity dairy farmers couldn't get away with something similar we would be loaded

Not that long ago they were 5 euro each. Didn't the farmer used to get money back for using them?

You'd get seven cows milk recorded for every test bull heifer milked , once upon a time.

Going of the journal article, their is going to be a reference year for april/may/June milk, any milk sent in over the reference volume will be hit with a penalty per litre that hasn't been released yet, in England where a/b milk pricing is commonplace peak milk is hit with 7 plus odd pence of a penalty over your reference allocation

I would think that strathroy will pull in a few new suppliers from the recent new entrants pool following that.
