Looking at purchasing one of these in. 1.6tdi

Only info I can find is that it’s the trendline/s model with a sportier trim.

    Any insight is appreciated.

Yeah its really poor spec. As you said it’s essentially a trendline model with some added bits on the outside like spoiler side skirts etc.

If you really like the look of the R Line I’d recommend going for a Highline/Match model and adding some exterior styling parts yourself. Aftermarket parts for Golfs are readily available

If that engine has had the post VW "dieselgate" software update done then make sure there are no EGR valve issues as EGR gave a good bit of trouble after the fix.

As Irish Mk6 Golfs go it is relatively well kitted out. It is actually based on a comfortline model and includes bluetooth, cruise control, 6 cd changer. The body kit looks well and it has 16 inch alloys which are small but much nicer than 15s on the comfortline. Some of the later ones included a multifunction steering wheel, the ones with out make the interior look a little basic in my view.

    I've a 2012 R-Line 1.6 diesel.

Spec isn't loaded but it's absolutely grand. It has air con, cruise control and a touch screen radio with bluetooth and aux but that's about the height of it. I think what it lacks versus a highline is a multifunction steering wheel, auto lights and wipers and nicer seats. I have seen some R-Lines with a multi function steering wheel, it seems to be hit and miss.

The exterior has different front and rear bumpers, side skirts and bootlid spoiler. It comes with 16 inch wheels which do look a bit lost in fairness.

Mine is heading for 100k kms since the dieselgate fix without issue (definitely going to break down on the way home now) i think good maintenance helps a bit. I wouldn't buy anything 1.6 tdi without a good history, they do have an appetite for EGR coolers and injectors both with and without the fix done.

I think the UK R-Line was ****ter than the Irish one, it was missing front fogs, rear electric windows, the touch radio and has even more poverty seats so an Irish car would be better if possible.

Hi thanks for the response. I suppose the reason why I’m looking at purchasing this r line is because it’s 11,000 and with only 110k km

Looking at this in blackwater motors as I’ve got the price down to 11k and it’s quite low mileage.. 110km.... I’m coming from an 05 punto

Hi abs thanks for the response.

How do you find it to drive? And what’s it like in petrol.

Need it for work 50km each way three days per week and a weekly commute to Galway from west cork.

Yeah that makes sense. I suppose the reason I’ve picked this one out is the price at 11k and low mileage , 110km. And had the 105hp instead of the 90

Is there much poke in the 105?

That does look like a really good example.

That being said, it's top dollar, my own was advertised for less than that when i bought it 3 years ago, from a main dealer.

It is low mileage, main dealer, decent warranty, probably a good history etc though, it's very legit vs a lot of similar vintage Golfs amd i suppose it's up to you if it's worth the premium.

Sorry about not being able to link it. New account so boards doesn’t allow links. Did you manage to find it?

I’m torn between paying the premium for that or maybe getting a newer focus with the 1.5tdci in the style or zetec trim

If you could get another bit off the price and a good long warranty it might be a decent purchase, it is hard to justify it price wise though, good and all as it looks.

    Fooking hell that's dreamer money...

Thanks for your advice man. Really appreciate it. After getting this feedback I might aim for the newer focus and get the dream golf in a few years

The exterior is really nice, but it doesn’t even have a multi function steering wheel.

€12k is a lot for what it is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,213 ✭✭✭shanec1928

That’s mental money. I paid that back in 2016 for a 11 golf of a higher spec.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 482 ✭✭Matthewjohn

As others have said €12k is a lot of money for a nine year old TDI Golf.

If you wanted something Golf like but better value a Seat Leon is worth a look as it’s based on the mk7 Golf. You would get something much newer with a similar engine and spec for the money.

    €11,995 or €11k that's nuts.

Buy an A6 or 5 series for that money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

For a mk6, you’d want to be off your game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 90 ✭✭Righty

I have the exact same car, same colour and all. My own is on 210'000km at the moment, I did have an egr issue last year though and I was quoted 1000 euro to replace it, so I just got it deleted and remapped the engine. So far so good fingers crossed. They're a grand car to be honest, lovely looking and always seem to get compliments. 12000 is crazy though, I'd be looking at selling mine for 7500 and it has upgraded alloys so I'd get something knocked off the price if ya could.

Much better value there. MK7, out of a Main dealer and it’s Higher spec.

11k for a 9 year old diesel Golf. Serious wtf. I honestly don't know who is worse, a dealer for asking that sort of money or the people paying it.

God I drove one recently, it literally felt in everyway like a 2001 Clio. That wouldn’t be a bad thing if we were in 2001, I’m sure the Clio was a great car then. But they really are four wheels and steering wheel.

    Totally agree.

There's a market for that though, people who like a "new car" and like the warranty. Less to go wrong too and it's well understood at this stage. No new fangled gadgets that need expensive equipment to fix.

There’s a new one out now, should be like coming up a few years.

My daughter bought a 12 golf 2.0 tdi in December for 6250 with100k miles on the clock they are hard to come by but hubby says stay away from the 1.6lt in anything prior to 17 too soft an engine according to the local mechanics. Now me myself have been driving VW Passats for 21 years, 4 in all latest a fab 16 rline 2.0lt bought in the north from a dealer last June. had comfort line sports line but this is by far the best. my next dream car would be the VW arteon, hopefully by the time in I get one 2025 it'll last 10 years so I wont have to go electric ya cant beat a diesel..!!

Get the Golf but don't give him that money, he's off the scale looking 11 grand for a 9 year old golf.

But they don't hold their value at all, at least with a golf you'll be able to sell/trade it after a few years, not that easy with the Leon.

If the OP keeps the car for 3 or 4 years the difference between what they’d get for a 12/13 year old Golf and a 9/10 year old Leon isn’t worth mentioning.
You’re still overpaying big time for that Golf when you could be in a more modern car in the meantime.

If you'd read my previous post I told him not to pay that amount of money for that golf. Nobody wants old Leon's he'll always be able to shift a golf.

    Nobody wants old Leons???

I've sold my wife's and my brothers in the last 5 years.
    Handiest cars I've ever shifted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16 RandomMad21

I’m Taking a look at some of the Seat Leon’s being mentioned above.

For essentially the same thing as a golf, if not higher spec in every way, it makes sense to get one.

This will be my car for next five or so years hopefully, so not overly worried about trade in value.

Think I was just in love with the idea of having my own Golf. Better to be patient and get a nice high line model when I’m older rather than a low spec trendline just for the sake of having one

Drive one and drive a golf.

Whilst they're higher spec and/or newer for the same money they can be lighter in construction.

    I've a 2017 fr spec Leon.
It's a fine spec and quite likely I'll get another one next but I'd be the first to admit that a golf is better put together.
Just in terms of sound insulation and that vw door thud.

But I bought it with very low miles nearly 2 years ago and the same money would have put me in a 2015 golf with more mileage on it.

I test drove a focus and a Leon with my youngest brother last year. He ended up in the focus. There was very little in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

    I would agree with that.

Sure they share the same DNA but sit in a Mk3 Leon and a Mk7 Golf and there is a world of difference.

Not saying the Leon is a bad car or the Golf is the holy grail but the Leon is most certainly not a Golf in the area where you spend most of your time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16 RandomMad21

The problem for me is that 12/13 is kinda of the upper end of my budget. So I’m trying to maximise what I get if that makes sense.

Was also looking at a 2015 Seat Leon FR 2.0tdi

To me the quality/spec of a Leon is somewhere in between a Polo and a Golf

Compared to a MK6 Golf the newer model MK3 Leon is a no brainier IMO. The MK7 Golf like the one linked would be better again if looking at 1.6s. 2 litre golfs are thinner on the ground and hold their value extremely well. The 2 litre 150 engine is pretty much as economical and a lot more pleasant, 6 speed too which would suit your long distance driving. The Leon is mechanically the same as the Golf so bar the lower rent interior it’s worth looking at.

I had a 184bhp Leon FR (there’s a few around) and used it for a 250km commute each day and it was faultless, comfy and cheap to run. They’re good value at the moment too in FR trim.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16 RandomMad21

Thank you! I’ve found a place with both a 2015 1.6 110hp and a fr 2.0 150 so will test them both out. About 1k in price difference.

    FR is 13,950 and 2015

    SE is 12,950 and 2016

Not sure how much they’d be willing to knock off

And I definitely take the 2.0 150 fr over any 1.6 golf or Leon. But it's your money.

    Check insurance on the fr.
Mine is same as other cars but you never know

Hi! I checked it last night and it’s only fifty euro more than my punto! And that includes the 30 euro change car fee.

A relative of mine has a 15 Fr he loves it, it's nice and nippy but my God the drivers seat is shockingly uncomfortable his insurance took a jump too, it's the 180 bhp one. If future trade in isn't a big worry for you they're definitely worth looking at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16 RandomMad21

Hey. It’s the 150hp one. For 13,995. Would hope to get them to 12,800 maybe. Alternatively consisting the cheaper and longer nct’d 1.6tdi with the 110hp

Insurance only goes up fifty, including the cost of changing cars of 30. So little to no increase and it would reduce my tax by about 200 a year

The 1.6 wouldn't be half as nice, more of an aul fellas car. We test drove both when buying the fr and the fr was by far and away the nicer of the two, wouldn't suit me tbh my back was in bits after a few Kms.

My fr has the alcantara leather seats.
Had no back issues. But I generally don't in VAG cars.
Have owned numberous golfs, I've had a passat and a4. wife has had ibiza, leon, Ateca.

Got rid of a kuga for the Leon purely due to back issues
