Was going to post a thread there actually.

Absolute champ he was. At least he got one last trip away before the end as well as his honors. Died surrounded by family as well.

He really was a positive figure over the last crappy year. Terrible that he died from Covid. May he rest in peace. I hope that the money he raised was put to good use.

That trip is what appears to have killed him.

    Aw. Sorry to hear that.
    Obviously a wonderful man.

Swanning off to the Caribbean wasn't the wisest of decisions.

At 100, you grab every day.
The family flew out in December before the UK government's strict rules on travel came into place with Sir Tom testing negative for Covid on his return.

    A full life.

I vaguely recall reading that it was something he'd always wanted to do. I'd say it was unwise but he was more than able to decide for himself and it was while the travel restrictions were loosened.

Live for another 6 months in your house in the UK and get a vaccine, or live for another 2 months and have a trip of a lifetime away with your family.

Think I'd take the trip after 100 years.

A quote attributed to Jeanne Calment (allegedly the oldest person ever to have lived) springs to mind - "I think God forgot me". I'd be agnostic about the God thing, but if I reached 100, I'd start getting a bit concerned about how long it might all drag on for. I'd absolutely start tempting fate and taking risks. And a trip of a lifetime would be one worth taking.

Jeanne Calment also said "I've only got one wrinkle, and I'm sitting on it".

He had a good run. He probably would have flown anyway even if he knew it would kill him.

    100 is a good innings.

Yes glad he got his trip, and hopefully passed peacefully. He lived more than most of us will, so I doubt he had any regrets!

Maybe I'm being a bit cold but given how much he was hailed as a hero for helping the NHS, why didn't he just do what the NHS have been asking people to do - "stay at home"?
It is unfortunate that he has died but many people have not been able to say goodbye to loved ones and this fella and his family think it's ok to swan off abroad on a completely unnecessary hollier?

It was on his bucket list and he was gifted the holiday.

One final hurrah with his family as opposed to looking at 4 walls.

At least he was able to live his last few days rather than wasting in a nursing home with no visitors.

I know what option I would pick!

In December he and his family were gifted a holiday to Barbados by British Airways.

Not sure when they went out there either. Must have been prior to their current level 5 lockdown.

At what point did the NHS stop saying that people should stay at home?

At some point shortly after the Barnard Castle eye test happened, or was it before that. Can never properly decode the rules.

You're not being cold rather completely ignorant as to what restrictions were in place when he travelled.
At 100 how many years would you expect to live for. The trip was a bucket list item for the Captain.

Where are you getting the 6 months from? He could have lived for another 6 years!

While it's difficult to begrudge someone of his age and service the opportunity to go to Barbados, if that is what he wanted (and not his family) i don't think he should have. Yeah he may not have been concerned about getting it himself but he could have passed it onto countless other people.

I know, that was my point. At least he was able to live his last few days/weeks/months with freedom.

Guaranteed you ask any 80/90/100 year old they'd all do the same.

My dad is 81, has covid caught it from nursing home staff, he's doing as well as an 81 year old can do with covid. No one can visit him.

I certainly would prefer he got one final hurrah, rather than looking at four walls wondering why no one is visiting him.

After raising over 30 million, the man certainly deserved a final hurrah.

A life well lived and a great legacy....raises over £30million, knighted by the Queen. In his interviews he always seemed to very positive and a good sense of humour.

He had said Barbados was on his bucket list. I'm not in favour of unessential travel, I think at the age of 100 you do whatever the hell you like & aren't answerable to anyone.

Could have lived another 6 years, but would be highly unlikely. Most likely outcome would be to trip over in the kitchen, bust a hip, spend a couple of weeks in hospital and catch a superbug of some description whilst there.

His life expectancy as a 100 year old was a 50% chance to reach 102, and he was already heading towards half way to that mark.

My grandad made it to 101 in good health and looking after himself in his own home, then something non fatal sent him to hospital and that finished him off. At the best of times hospital is a dangerous place for the elderly.

Sad to hear of Captain Sir Tom Moore's passing. I was really hoping he would pull through.

What an inspirational man. He stepped up for his country in WWII, then as a 99 year old man, he did so again, and raised a nations spirits with his never give up attitude. The world has lost a true hero and a great man. May he rest in peace.

In his own words, "Tommorow will be a good day".

    RIP Captain Sir Tom.

He tested negative after he came back from his trip to Barbados, and he tested positive before he ended up in hospital. So neither of those places are where he got it.
