Just a few short questions for now :)

    1. How long did you play GAA and did you train consistently?
    2. The reason I asked is because you mentioned consistency issues a few times in your log, any idea why you're struggling with that with the running?
    3. What do you like most about running?
    4. When lockdown is over and we have some races on the horizon, what are you goal times for each distance?

How's it going. Nice to see this.

    1. Who did you play for?

    2. Is there any risk in running with an unrepaired ACL?

    3. You are very young by the standardson this forum and already running really good times. How low do you think you can go in mile, 5K and 10k?

    4. Whats your favourite biscuit? ;)

    5. Have you adopted a soccer club in Edinburgh?

    6. Will Scotland vote for independence?

Thanks for setting this up B, don't think there's any questions I won't answer but maybe I shouldn't test ye!

    1. What position did you play in GAA?

Ater around 16 it was exclusively hurling I played, very little gaelic football where I'm from which probably answers question 5 too! Under age I mostly played in the full back line but to be honest I despised it, started moving up the field slowly and by the time I finished I was mostly in the half forward line. I wasn't much of a scorer although I did take frees occasionaly, I was more up and down the line than an all out forward.

    2. What brought you to Boards?

I'm pretty sure the first time I found the website was when I was doing my Leaving Cert, the forum here for that is a great resource. Since then I tend to dip in and out, when Covid hit I was reading a good bit too see what the perspective at home was like (some mad perspectives on here it turns out!) I'd also started taking running more seriously so found this forum, and I was amazed at the quality of info. The logs in particular were very impressive, so after several years of contributing nothing to the website decided to start my own. I've found it a big help, theres so much quality info on here and a great community to go along with it. I'll try to get more involved from now on!

    3. List your PB’s?

This will be a short answer! Have only raced twice (one socially distanced)

    5k 18.22 (Oct 2020)
    10k 41.38 (Sept 19)

I've done some TTs too, 1 mile 5.27 and 3k 11.24 both in lockdown one. My parkrun PB is 21.24 I think!

    4. Favourite beer?

Smithwicks was my drink at home, Tennents over here! Probably pretty clear that I'm not really drinking for the taste haha.

    5. What county are you from?

The most successful hurling county of all time, sadly looks like it could be a while before we see any more success.

    6. Favourite brand of runners and model?

This might be even worse than the beer answer! From 2019 until mid way through lockdown 1 I was wearing a £20 pair of runners made by a brand called Fabric. They lasted for a fair few miles before the soles gave in, so upgraded to a £40 pair of Nikes that I'm not sure of the name! However I think they may be an older version of Pegasus, but I could be imagining that! I'm aware that a better pair would be a very worthwhile investment, so I'm on the lookout for reccomendations!

    7. Dream date?

Hard to even dream of one at the moment with Covid! In better times, something outdoors like a walk in the woods or in the mountains, then retreat to a nice countryside pub for dinner and drinks. Nothing too fancy!

    8. What’s Edinburgh like for running, favourite location to run there and why?

I haven't tried any others but I'd say it surely ranks fairly highly. Loads of possible off road routes, particularly near where I live. There's the canal towpath 700m from my door which runs from Edinburgh to Falkirk and is pancake flat, although can be very busy and is quite narrow. There's also a horrible narrow bridge to cross about 3k out. There's a network of bike paths 1.2k from my door that total about maybe 20 miles and is reasonably flat, much wider and very scenic. It's where I do most of my runs now. There's a river called the Water of Leith that runs 13 miles from just outside Edinburgh and there's a footpath for about 90% running alongside. Quieter than the canal but narrow, it's more like a trail in some places. These three can be joined up at various points too. Spoiled!

There's also Queens drive which is a quiet road around Arthurs Seat (big hill in the city) which has almost a mile of steep climbing. This was where I did my first few runs here, the loop is just over 5k and my tactic was to run as fast as I could every time. Didn't last long unsurprisingly. Along with all these there's several decent and varied parks, and during lockdown I sometimes run through the city centre which can be a nice change.

One issue is there is only one track, and it never fully opened after lockdown, there's a new one being constructed so hopefully will have a choice in the future. The parkrun course is along a beach promenade, pancake flat and a decent turning point. Obviously it's quite exposed but on a calm day I'd say it would be a really fast course. I've only done it once, after a long long night and lets say I didn't enjoy it. Will hopefully get to a few when it's back and there's a few more close by that I want to try.

As for my favourite, I think it's the bike path. Most of my miles have been on there, it's also where I did a few TTs. I only discovered it during the first lockdown (or rather how close it was to me) and I did most of my running after 9pm. It was so quiet, I'd also see loads of foxes and other wildlife, I think it really helped keep me sane through the ordeal! I run without music and mostly alone so I really like to be somewhere aesthetically pleasing, the paths tick all the boxes for me.

Thanks for the questions, seems I care about running routes more than I knew!

    Thanks for the questions :)

    1. How long did you play GAA and did you train consistently?

Pretty much from 6 to 22 when I tore my ACL, yeah played all year every year between school, club and a bit of colleges. I never even really had any injuries until the ACL, I'd say I never missed more than one match from start to finish.

    2. The reason I asked is because you mentioned consistency issues a few times in your log, any idea why you're struggling with that with the running?

I think you're on to something here, with hurling training and matches are at a set time and as part of team, there's really no choice in the matter. Running takes much more self discipline, I would love to join a club here but there's no activity for now. I think it would help me hugely with the consistency to have set sessions as part of a group. Training solo, I can be flexible but that has it's downsides as runs can get pushed backwards or forgotten about altogether, particularly when other parts of life are busy. Lockdown is a big help in this regard! But I will try to focus on staying more disciplined, in reality I can find the time to get out pretty much everyday without it impacting other aspects too much. Consistency is the focus for this year!

    3. What do you like most about running?

I think I love the simplicity of it, very little organisation or thinking involved. Or well so I thought. Plenty of thinking can be done! But to be able to just put on the runners, head out the door and straight into an easy run is brilliant.

    4. When lockdown is over and we have some races on the horizon, what are you goal times for each distance?

As soon as I can race a 10k I will, if I can get a few more weeks training in I'd be hoping for sub 39 on that. The first races that will be back here will probably be just 5ks and 10ks, so I'd like to try progress towards sub 18 for 5k by the summer. Afte that I'd have to reassess and decide on what distances I'd like to focus on, but right now I'd lean towards sticking to shorter distances and just take off as much time as I can while staying consistent with training.

    Cheers :)

    6. Will Scotland vote for independence?

    Thanks for the questions :)

    1. Who did you play for?

I was only a club level player, we were junior/intermediate for most of my playing career. Have gone up to senior this year though! Missing the county final win was maybe the worst part of not being at home so far.

    2. Is there any risk in running with an unrepaired ACL?

Not massively as far as I've been told, the main function of the ACL is for twisting motions so as long as I'm running in reasonably straight lines it's no problem. One significant problem however, is running steep downhills. I can't do this fast at all or the knee will flare up. Similar with a rough cross country surface. So that's definitely something I need to be wary of, without the protection of having the ACL functioning further damage could be very dangerous.

    3. You are very young by the standardson this forum and already running really good times. How low do you think you can go in mile, 5K and 10k?

Ah ye aren't that old :) appreciate that, I think in terms of times I have a lot of room for improvement if I can consistently chip away at them. A sub 5 mile is very appealing, if I felt like I was close to that at some stage this year I'd probably give a go at following a plan for a while and make an attempt at it. For 5k and 10k, at the moment I think I could keep knocking good chunks off both for another while. I'd love to head towards 17 and 37 minutes respectively. These are ambitious enough targets and I have no chance of achieving them if I'm not consistent. So that is the real focus for the next while at least. I know once I can get that, stay injury free and put in a decent amount of work the times will get faster.

    4. Whats your favourite biscuit? ;)

Haha don't want to have to go looking up definitions so I'll play it safe and go for chocolate rich teas. Not that popular but I love them with a cup of tea.

    5. Have you adopted a soccer club in Edinburgh?

Of course, there was only one option the mighty Hibees. I moved here in Sept 16, 4 months after they won the cup for the first time in 114 years.

This was one of the best cup finals of all time, beating a resurrected Rangers 3-2 with a late header from captain David Gray, an Edinburgh local. Dubliner Anthony Stokes scored the other 2 for Hibs in an unreal performance.

At full time Hibs fans invaded the pitch like so many counties have in Croke Park. Unfortunately there were a few nasty incidents, and I happen to have gotten to know one of the idiotic perpertrators. Eventually the mounted police calmed things down, followed by the below rendition of a great Proclaimers song (Leith locals!). Pretty spine tingling stuff.

The Leith area where the club is based is the setting of Trainspotting, a former port town that merged into the city and with the decline of the ports the area became ran down and the centre of Scotlands heroin epidemic in the 80s. The area is going through regentrification over the last few decades but it still has a community and almost hard luck vibe to the place. Hibs are one of those teams that often come close but rarely get to win the big prizes, apart from a great spell in the mid 1900s. Winning the cup in 2016 was a massive deal to the club and to the area, and I hate to say I missed it by only a few months!

    6. Will Scotland vote for independence?

I think they will yes, but I think it could take a while before they get another chance. However with the way politics has gone recently who knows, it could happen sooner than we think. I think it's a problem that most people decide their vote rather emotionally, it's almost tribal so there is not a huge percentage of voters that could be swung. At the moment I think that percentage is siding with independence but that could also change.

    Cheers :)

Thanks for the questions CBG :)

    1. What do ya miss most about Ireland? (apart from family and frinds!)

Nothing too much in particular to be honest, the similarities bewtween here and home are far greater than any differences. I would say however the pubs here in general are fairly soulless, so many Wetherspoons and other chains. I suppose there's a good reason there's so many replica Irish pubs around the world because there's nothing quite like it, however as we all know the replicas aren't much of a substitute!

    2. Who is the second best Hurler you have seen? (I'm presuming Henry Shefflin is No.1 for a Kk man).

I go against the grain on this one, for me JJ Delaney is the best, Tommy Walsh second and Henry third. TJ Reid is closing fast on Henry too, he'll never have the same success in terms of medals but what he's doing in a far inferior team is unbelievable to me. I think the 06-09 team were as good as they were mainly because of JJ and Tommy, they made the defence pretty much impenetratable while also launching great attcks. Also the two boys gave a lot of their best performances for their struggling clubs, JJ in particular was out of this world for the club.

    3. How are the trainspotting series of novels perceived in Leith and Edinburgh? Is there any resentment for the negative portrayal of a small number of characters in the series?

I think they're generally well recieved but I have heard people saying they think the series glorifies the heroin scene which I definitely don't see. I loved the books and the films, I saw T2 in the cinema over here and there was a great atmosphere. I think some of the characters are exaggerated just enough to make them hard for anyone to identify with, although they weren't too far off some real life people either apparently. Irvine Welsh is a fairly marmite like figure, either hated or loved. He does have a few "interesting" opinions as far as I know, but I'm a huge fan of the series regardless.

    4. All things being equal would you prefer to go for a run or still play hurling?

I'd have to say hurling, no better game in my opinion and playing with your local club makes the experiences all the better.

    5. Funniest thing you seen happen in a club game or training session?

A lot of people don't believe this story but it's true! We played gaelic football underage but it wasn't taken all that serious as you might imagine. I think we were in an u14 final or something like that, and we were gonna prepare a but better. At the training before the match the coach told the goalkeeper to bring a tee to the game for the kick outs. Match day comes and the coach asked him if he brought the tee. Yeah, I did it's in the car he says. Why is it in the car, go and get it he's told. Back he comes with a flask of tea. Everybody was pretty much speechless, his logic was that it must have been to keep himself warm during the match.

    6. Most embarrassing thing to happen to you while out on a run?!

Apart from slipping on ice ( ) I can't really think of any! If anybody saw a few of my failed attempts at starting TTs that was probably a funny sight I suppose!

    7. What's your favourite type of training run/session?

The list of different sessions I've done wouldn't be much longer than my list of PBs! I do like a progressive long run, one where the first couple of easy miles feel harder than they should and I begin to question whether I'll even be able to cover the distance. Then a few miles in I'm having to keep an eye on pace to keep it under control before really finding a rythym and getting faster without feeling like I'm working any harder. A run like that has probably happened about three times but they were good!

Cheers! Is your log gonna make a comeback this year? :)

    Cheers :D

Thanks for the questions Lainey, good to see your base building is going well :)

    1. How long do you think you will stay in Edinburgh?

Very much up in the air with this one, I finish my degree this year and after that I don't really have anything tieing me down here except my job but that's only a part time one to keep me going during my studies. At the moment I'd be leaning towards trying somewhere new but it's probably not the best time to think about it with lockdown. We've been under pretty heavy restrictions since September with only a brief amnesty over Christmas. There's still a lot I want to do in the city and around Scotland so who knows, I might stay on for another while!

    2. Who is your fav sportsperson?

So many to choose from, I'll go with Roger Federer. Incredible career, insane longevity, and seems like a very nice guy all round. Love his one handed backhand, and how he has almost no exploitable weaknesses. Made all the better having Nadal, Djokovic and I'll reluctantly include Murray as competition. Some of the Wimbledon games against Nadal are better than any other sporting events I've ever seen.

    3. King or Tayto?

King, but I'd take either over here! Can get Northern Irish taytos but they just aren't the same.

    4. Lyons or Barrys?

I was never able to tell much of a difference bewteen them amazingly! Similar to the crisps though I'd take either over here, Tetleys just isn't the same. In fact I drink far less tea here because of that.

    5. Do you plan to run a Marathon? If so which marathon would you pick (post covid)

Somewhere down the line absolutely but I don't think I'd be willing to commit unless I knew I was going to give it a good rattle. When I eventually do Dublin, Edinburgh and Berlin all look pretty amazing. Boston seems to have a lot of prestige which is appealing too! If I got to a point where I was running them fairly regularly I'd probably like to try a few around Europe and use it as a way to do some travelling too.

    6. Do you enjoy training alone or with people?

I do the vast majority of training alone, a few friends dip in and out of running, most of them are out at the moment! I definitely enjoy running with company, it helps me keep the pace sensible and it's just a nice activity to do with someone. Longer runs in particular can fly by with a good conversation. Having said that, solo runs are great too and I do like to be alone with my thoughts sometimes. They can be a great head clearer and I've yet to feel worse after a run than before it really. I think the get the most out of my running though I will have to train in a group eventually.

    7. Would you consider being coached?

Definitely, ideally as part of a club. However there is a small bit of satisfaction for me in "winging it" and seeing results all the same. I'm very aware of the benefits of being coached though and as I said in an earlier post I think it would really help me stay disciplined. For now though I'm flying solo so I'll be keeping it as simple and straight forward as I can!

    8. If you could travel anywhere in the world where would it be & why?

To be honest I wouldn't have any great travel yearnings, at least not too far away. There's loads of European cities I'd love to visit or maybe live in, I only speak English though so that rules out quite a few - that could be rectified I suppose. Any of the capitals, Paris, Berlin, somewhere Nordic, anywhere really!

    Cheers! :)

Thanks for the questions ReeRee :)

What has surprised you most about running since you got more into it? (good or bad)

The benefit of easy running. I didn't do any at all when I started, everything was pretty much flat out. Even when I thought I'd slowed to easy it was really a tempo pace. During lockdown 1 when I lowered the pace and up the volume I started to really improve. Still don't have it nailed completely though, plenty of room for improvement!

What do you miss most about playing hurling?

Local derbys! We had some very big rivalries with close by clubs and matches against them were always intense, even in challenge matches or meaningless league games. Lots of players would be good friends on opposing teams, but there would be zero love lost during the game. Everything stayed on the pitch though and you'd often end up drinking with them after the game. If one club won a county final it wouldn't be unusual to have a good few players from a rival club join in the celebrations for a few days! It's the sort of competion I love, max intensity during the game but a lot of respect and goodwill too.

Are there any Irish races you would like to give a go?

DCM would be the obvious one that I'd like to try, some of the shorter races that have a great reputation on here like the Raheny 5 mile and Jingle Bells sound really good too.

Have you read any running books (besides Daniels :)) ?

I bought Science of Running by Steve Magness and it never arrived, this has reminded me I must go looking for it again! I did read Born to Run by Chris McDougal a good few years ago, I thought it was brilliant. None other than that as far as I can remember, although reading some of the logs here is probably as good as a lot of books! I'm more of a fiend for Youtube videos, I've watched hours of Sage Canaday at this point I think, I also follow Ben Parkes, Matt Rees, FOD Runner, a few more.. I'd say I probably sepnd as much time watching videos about running as I do running :o

What's your dream time for 5k?

The long term dream would be to head towards 16 minutes flat, probably overly ambitious but I might hit a few good times while trying!

Where's your favourite place in Ireland to visit?

I love the west, I "studied" in NUIG for two years out of school and Galway remains one of my favourite places. I often think Edinburgh is just a bigger version in a lot of ways. Most holidays in my childhood were to Kerry, I absolutely love it there too, particularly in the wilder parts towards the coast and in the mountains.

    What are you studying?

Boring old Accounting! The plan was to try to go straight into ACCA after my degree but the thoughts of doing more exams straight away is daunting at the moment. I work in a bookies at the moment - well furloiughed at the moment - and the gambling industry is probably more appealing to me at this stage..

Why did Kilkenny thrash Offaly in hurling so much

Ah poor Offaly, how the mighty have fallen. To be fair most would say they over achieved hugely in the late part of last century considering their small population and winning All Irelands in both codes. But their regression in hurling has been terrifying. And the game is definitely worse off without them, a strong Offaly would do wonders for the Leinster championship. Hard to see it happening any time soon though, ye have such a long way to come back. I'd consider Brian Whelan one of the best ever if that's any consolation!

    Cheers :)

    5. WAs JJ Delaney better at wing back or full back?

Thanks for the questions crisco, hope the hands have warmed up after Saturday!

    1. Favourite Social Media platform?

Not a huge fan of most social media these days, have deleted most of my accounts! Forums like this if they count as social media are very good though, the sheer quantity and quality of information is brilliant. At this point I think the world would benefit hugely if Facebook was just deleted from existence. Twitter has it's uses and can be good for things like sports news, but it's also full of negativity, pointless arguments and a lot of self congratulation which I wouldn't be a fan of.

    2. Preferred winter weather: arctic cold and crisp or wet and mild?

Despite my recent woes with ice arctic cold all the way and as much snow as possible thrown in. Absolutely love it. Even in the last few weeks my beloved bike paths were beautiful surrounded by the snow. Having said that I do enjoy a run in the rain too! I tend to like more extreme weather, although I'm no good in the heat. 20 degrees is plenty warm for me, don't get too many above that over here!

    3. You have an entire Saturday morning to yourself (non COVID times), what do you do?

I love when there's a super Saturday of sport with several big events going on. Most jobs I've had I work most Saturdays but I'd often try to make sure I'd have a day off for soemthing like this. An early soccer match, a big horse meeting, a round of 6 nations games, maybe a big boxing match or UFC fight later in the night. On days like that I'd probably have a few bets in the morning, then retire to a cozy pub with a few friends and there's not many places I'd rather be. Maybe I'd go for a run beforehand too! :pac:

    4. Ryanair or Aer Lingus?

Haven't flown on Aer Lingus in years, the Ryanair ones from here to Dublin are usually dirt cheap and it's so short I'm willing to sacrifice the comfort. I generally leave check in till the last minute literally, so can often get a good seat without paying extra. I've gotten the seat right at the front door a couple of times, which is a godsend with a hangover.

Worst ever flight however was coming back from a lads holiday in Malta in 2015, a 4 hour Ryanair flight on zero sleep and 7 heavy days in 35 degree heat was no fun. I think I'm still traumatised. Any flight over 90 minutes now I'm not sure I'd even consider Ryanair.

    5. WAs JJ Delaney better at wing back or full back?

Wing back for me but what makes him the greatest was the transition to full back at the end of his career. I think what made Kilkenny so hard to beat had a lot to do with how many clean catches JJ made from opposition puck outs. Nowadays most teams will flood the half back line for opposition puckouts, no need with JJ there he almost always had the beating of his man. So not only could the opposition not win their own puckout, KK were launching attacks from them.

As a full back he really encapsulated the art of defending, nothing fancy and was happy to simply have the beatings of his man, no huge clearances or anything just win the ball and lay it off to a free man. Not many socres came off him but some of his battles with Canning and Callanan (two best non KK forwards last decade for me) were enthralling. "The hook" on Callanan in 2014 was probably his top moment.

Cheers again, hopefully races return before long and I can continue trying to chase down your times :P

+100% It will go out of date soon anyway, teens these days are not bothered by it. More Snapchat, Discord etc.. which in a way is possibly even worse.

Whats your pre race routine? Any race superstitions?

Do you do many sessions on a track? If so how accessible are 400m tracks in Edinburgh?

Thanks for taking time to answer! And i don't think you will be long surpassing my times...

PS: totally agree with you analysis of JJ. That 2014 final was unreal, JJ v Callanan at one end and Richie Hogan (amongst others) shooting out the lights at the other.

Thanks for the questions MY BAD, follow your log keenly as I feel it's one I can learn an awful lot from.

Whats your pre race routine? Any race superstitions?

Preperation for the few races I've done hasn't been great! The only parkrun I've done here was on a hot summer morning after an enjoyable Friday night in the pub. Almost ditched the idea but I was meeting a friend there so rushed out without taking so much as a sip of water. Still somehown fancied myself to break 20 mins! Had to pull over a couple of times to dry retch and don't even know what time I finished in, the second half was at least a minute slower than the first though.

Not much better for my real race debut in the 10k, went wild the weekend before so did no running at all during the week. Planned a couple of easy runs the two days before but it was my birthday on the Friday so was coaxed into a sensible celebration." Needless to say getting a good nights sleep on the Saturday was about the best I could manage in preparation. Actually felt great then for the race on the Sunday though.

Last years 5k was a lot better! Did some good sessions in the weeks leading up, did 12x400 off 1 min fairly steady a week out which was a big confidence booster. Kept everything short and easy then until race day. I'll probably follow something like this going forward!

In terms of on the day I don't like eating too much pre race, maybe just some toast and a banana, a cup of coffee and sip on water. I did a fairly good warm up for the 5k too, a lap of the course some activations and even a couple of strides! Could probably do with making this a habit for sessions too.

No real superstitions, lots of mind games though. The middle half of a race or even sometimes a session is usually spent thinking up of some sort of excuse to stop, I find it passes the time! Thankfully apart from a couple of 3k TTs have no DNFs. I think 3k is one of the hardest distances to get right but I stopped both at exactly 2k so definitely just gave in mentally.

Do you do many sessions on a track? If so how accessible are 400m tracks in Edinburgh?

I've only been on the track once for a 5k TT in December 2019. It was a couple of months after the 10k and my first sub 20 although it might have been short as I ran in different lanes and used the watch (for the first time!) to measure.

Had always planned to start using the track before Covid hit, it's about 3k from my door so ideal location. Accesibilty wise it has long opening hours, 9am-10pm I think, and can be used pay as you go or a subscribtion so couldn't be much better.

Since Covid, it only opened for a couple of months but was only available for club bookings and has now closed again.

At this stage I really want to get using a track, I've kind of switched to time based intervals lately because GPS for short reps probably isn't all that accurate.

There is a new sports centre under construction that will have an indoor and outdoor track so hopefully that comes along soon.

Oh and I did find a sort of gravel track to do the 10 minute distance trial last year, had an awful experience with it and don't plan on going back any time soon!

So yeah, not a whole lot of options for tracks particularly right now. The sooner that changes the better!

Are there any local GAA clubs, set up by ex pats? If you had time would you think of linking up with them? Even as a mentor?

How has lockdown been? Have you managed to get home at all?

    Favourite movie of all time?

    Favourite album of all time?

Have you/would you ever try to run up to Edinburgh Castle?

Do you listen to any music/podcasts while you're running?

Have you had the chance to see much of Scotland since you've been over there? Lived in Dundee myself for a year and really enjoyed my time there. Lot's of good spots to escape to for the day I found.

    Thanks for the questions :)

There's a fairly decent Gaelic Football club and I used to go to a few of their matches when I first came over. There was also a half hearted attempt around then to get a hurling club going which I definitely would have gotten involved in but it fell by the wayside. Have lost interest in the football club to be honest, so I wouldn't really see myself getting more involved with them to be honest, it's all about the running now :pac:

How has lockdown been? Have you managed to get home at all?

This is only our second full lockdown so maybe not as fatigued as I would be back home, altough from the end of Septmeber we were in our version of level 3 which isn't much better, basically you could go to work but that was about it! In a sense I prefer a full lockdown to that although I do enjoy my job and there's a decent social aspect to it that's definitely missed. This lockdown we're also allowed to meet with another person for exercise so I've been taking advantage of that almost daily.

Running has been a great hobby to have for both of them, which became a lot more noticeable when I had to take some time off. I'd find it much harder to deal with all of this without it. The last time I fell by the wayside with the running was during level 3, I found it much harder to stay motivated/disciplined/consistent.

Haven't been home since the start of the pandemic, that's been a bit of a pain but I didn't go all that regularly anyway. I was obviously stuck here for Christmas but the restrictions were eased for a couple of days so it turned out to be pretty enjoyable, still would have preferred to be home but I know a good few that did manage to get over and they spent most of their trip isolating so I didn't really miss out on much. I'm not even thinking about going anywhere until it can be done properly/safely, hopefully that's sooner rather than later.

    Favourite movie of all time?

My answer to this tends to change on what I've seen most recently, I'm very bad for watching the same movies over and over again and not watching new one! At the moment the first thought that came to my head was Goodfellas so I'll go with that.

    Favourite album of all time?

I love my music but I very rarely listen to full albums! Maybe showing my youth a bit there! One that I did used to listen to in full and I enjoed a lot was Sams Town by the Killers so it'll have to be that.

Have you/would you ever try to run up to Edinburgh Castle?

I've ran pretty close to it! I can make a pretty nice, although very hilly, route around the Old Town that I run at quiet times like lockdown. It takes me just to the castle gates but they are closed at the moment so thats as close as I get.

There is a race called the Seven Hills of Edinburgh that usually takes place during the summer that takes in the castle. It's definitely one I'd consider whenever they return!

Do you listen to any music/podcasts while you're running?

No I never do, I like running with my thoughts! I do however get music stuck in my head sometimes! I can see the benefit especially for longer runs, but mine are rarely too long that I'm getting bored. I also like the sounds of life around me when I'm running. Something I've wondered about is people who listen to stuff during training but then they can't during most races. Does that affect some people negatively when they can't have the music? I feel like it would bother me a little bit if I did all my training with music the had to race without it, maybe that's just me though!

    Cheers :)

Not nearly as much as I'd like to have unfortunately, Dundee being one place that's on the list of places I want to go. Have been to Glasgow a fair few times, and the Loch Lomond area is one of the nicer places I've been. Had great plans last summer to climb Ben Nevis but between weather, Covid restrictions and work the plans kept getting delayed and then cancelled. We'll hopefully get there as soon as restrictions and weather allow this summer.

I definitely want to do the West Highland Way at some point, which is a walk from just north of Glasgow to the foot of Ben Nevis in Fort William. There's actaully a race along the route and all! And maybe head further north and to some of the island would be great too. Yeah, plenty of exploring I still want to do here. If there's one positive I hope I take from the pandemic it's to just do more stuff. Myself and it seems a lot of my friends are great for making plans and not following through, hopefully this will teach us to take action while we have the chance because you never know when it won't be possible!

Hi edinrunna. I lived in Scotland for a short while (probably before you were born :o), I was in Stirling - a beautiful city, not unlike Edinburgh but a bit smaller. Ben Nevis is well worth climbing ;)

Do you see yourself as a runner now?

Do you do any other sport currently or have an interest in participating in any other sport(s) - swimming, cycling, adventure racing...?

Apologies if some of these have been hit on already.

Thanks for the questions ariana :) I've only passed through Stirling, it's a beautiful looking city! Apparently very expensive though  Ben Nevis will be done this summer, I'm determined!

Do you see yourself as a runner now?

When I hit a couple of good weeks in a row I definitely do, going for a run becomes second nature and I get really into it. There is times when I acn't be bothered but they're becoming less and less frequent. Running is now something I hope to keep up indefinitely so it's starting to become a part of my self identity bit by bit!

As a GAA player did training include much running and if so did you enjoy it then?

There was quite a bit of running particulary at the start of a season, but very little easy or even steady running. Mostly short sprints with short recoveries. Looking back I'm not sure we would have gotten much out of those sessions to be honest. A couple of coaches we had did have us doing what I'd now know as sort of fartlek type sessions. Jogging the width and then striding the lenght of the pitch sort of thing.

I didn't particularly enjoy this aspect of training but it was one of my stronger points. In most teams I played on I would have been one of the "fitter" players. I put that in inverted commas because it's a different kind of fitness I suppose, overall I defintely feel fitter now than I ever did playing hurling.

How have you found the switch from a team sport to an individual sport - I imagine you miss the comradery?

Definitely miss that aspect of it. Although there are pros and cons. With an individual sport you aren't relying on anyone and there's no one relying on you. So I think it's a bit more linear, you really will get out exactly what you put in. Again not really sure if this is either a positive or a negative. It is yet another reason though that joining a club is on my to do list, in a lot of ways it would be the best of both worlds!

You're offered a job with the option to work from any city in the world - where would you place yourself?

This might be cheating a bit but it sounds like I could continuously change city with that job? If so that would be great and what I'd probably do - but only while I'm young and single I suppose. If I had to pick one to settle down it would probably be Kilkenny! Yes it is a city ;)

Do you do any other sport currently or have an interest in participating in any other sport(s) - swimming, cycling, adventure racing...?

I'm a terrible swimmer, I can barely thread water and would probably struggle to swim the lenth of a pool. That can be changed with lessons though I suppose..

I used to do quite a bit of cycling when I was younger but only as a means of transport, never as a sport and looking back the distances wouldn't have been huge, I go on longer runs now! It's actually been a side effect of my ACL injury that my quads have become very very weak, if I cycle now they get fatigued really quickly. It's something I really need to work on, both for running and just for general health. At the moment I'm just doing some bodyweight squats and the like a few times a week, when gyms are back I'll have to get in some resistance training. Hill running would also be a help and I know myself I avoid steep hills a bit too much. The February running challenge is gonna help with that!

If I improved on those two aspects there's a small chance I would be tempted to try a triathlon. I also like the thought of ultra running/trail running but again the bad knee is holding me back on that. Steep downhills usually spell trouble for me. Again though, this can be improved on so maybe in the future, I won't be ruling them out anyway.

Other than that, not much I'd be interested in taking part in, happy to be a spectator and stick to the running for now!

    Cheers :)

Hey Murph, thanks for the questions! Yeah love them both just not together!

    1. Favourite A/R running log(s)?

I'll give 3 and hope no one feels left out :pac:

Healy's "It's all in the try" is a great example of long term improvement, unreal to see how far he's come since the first post. Serious consitency and sensible increments along the way.

Dubh Geannins "Sub 5 minute mile" is a really good success story, starts with a simple target ends with the achievment, overcoming some difficult obstacles along the way. Done on low mileage too, very efficient training.

Laineyfrecks "Dream Big" since the pandemic started is crazy impressive. Again serious consistency and sensible increments, loads of huge PBs in TTs, when racing returns she's gonna be taking huge chunks over all distances. Still improving rapidly too, some great times to come.

The Boggers Log is fairly entertaining too :pac:

    2. Best live gig ever?

I've been to very few! Never been something that I've really been into, nothing particularly against concerts or anything though. I went to TRNSMT in 2019 with two friends from home, Gerry Cinnamon was headline and it was pretty good!

    3. Favourite session (running, that is). :)

Not sure the way I do long runs would count as a session, so I'll say one I've done recently which is 20 x 1min on/off. I like the idea of varying the paces a bit throughout and trying to do it progressively - cover more distance as the weeks go on.

    4. Speaking of sessions, favourite beer?

Already answered so I'll tell you my least favourite - Carlsberg. And I used to actually like it when I was 18 or so, maybe a few bad experiences and now I can't stand it.

    5. Any qualms about the gambling industry? How’s it doing during COVID?

Yeah it has its issues alright. There is definitely a sort of seedy/underhand side to some of it. The big one is obviously problem gambling, which is not dealt with effectively at all. The operators generally do the bare minimum required, the training and tools available aren't great. Self exclusion is really the only tool used and it's terribly ineffective and doesn't address the majority of the problem. Having said that more regulation isn't always the answer either, it's a difficult problem to solve. As seen with the US going for legalisation in a lot of states outright banning might not be the answer either. Although it could be said that the states doing so are legalising in spite of the issues associated rather than because of.

There is definitely a happy medium when operators can turn a profit without having to rely on income from problem gamblers. Problem gamblers are easy to identify and easy to ban. If the will to do this was there then maybe it could be done, but it doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon. At least the support available is improving and some of the stigma is slightly reducing.

A big talking point at the moment is the advertising, especially during sports events. I'm not sure this is a big an issue as it's made out to be, although it certainly doesn't help. I just don't think banning it would have as much of an effect as some people think. As I said, not an easy problem to solve but it wouldn't put me off continuing to work in the industry!

Bookmakers have had a great time since Covid, again that's a slightly depressing thought. Shops were closed but increased revenue online more than made up for it. Gambling and drinking tend to go hand in hand, so the theory is that what they saved on pubs being closed they spent on betting. Probably is one aspect of it, although there would certainly have been an increase in boredom, a sense of excitement etc that can all lead down dangerous paths.

When shops opened again they were limited capacity but to be honest as busy as ever in a lot of cases. Restrictions/guidelines have been a bit ambiguous/confusing in some cases and like most retailers they chose to interpret them as loosley as possible. I'm actually surprised there haven't been any outbreaks linked to the shops I work in, they "clientele" are by far the worst at following any social distancing guidelines out of anywhere else I've seen. Any pub I was in had far better compliance.

    6. Go-to running gear - any favourite items or are they all the same?

All much the same to be honest! Have loads of t shirts in various brands and colours, I tend to race and do big sessions in a black nike t shirt, it's just very comfortable to run fast in and suits most weather.

    Cheers Murph

    Hey edinrunna.
Gonna use my "go to" spotlight questions.

    1. Favorite band?
    2. Greatest song of all time?
    3. Best live performance of all time?
    4. Alcoholic beverage of choice?
    5. Favorite type of training run?
    6. Favorite biscuit?

You got a hard time for these but they can all be interpreted to make unique answers :pac:

    1. Favorite band?

Always have a hard time picking this, again it varies from day to day! Youtube is suggesting a lot of Rolling Stones to me lately and I'm not turning them off!

    2. Greatest song of all time?

Similar to above, changes day to day! In line with above, I rarely tire of listening to Sympathy for the Devil.

    3. Best live performance of all time?

Now I wasn't there for this, and it's not everyones cup of tea, but I think the original Riverdance is incredible :pac: Often one of the first things put on at a flat party, I know at least one other person who does this so I know I'm not alone!

There's also a great full concert on Youtube from the Dubliners at the Gaiety in 2003 that has some crackers throughout.

    4. Alcoholic beverage of choice?

I've said my beer but lately I've been very fond of a simple White Russian, Vodka, Tia Maria and milk! Don't knock them till you've tried them!

    5. Favorite type of training run?

Easy runs :pac: they really are sometimes though, in nice weather or on a nice route, being able to let the mind wander without considering pace can be bliss.

    6. Favorite biscuit?

If you mean biscuit that's also called a cake it's Jaffa Cakes. If not chocolate rich tea!

Thanks for the questions shotgun, if I ever need reminding that I could be training harder a quick look at your log always does the trick!

How many pairs of running shoes, shorts, tees do you have?

Shoes - 1, this needs to change!
Shorts - 3, 2 black and 1 navy Karimoor ones. They have a key pocket but i generally hold my keys in my hand. Suitably short to run fast!
Tees - not sure, 10+ although some of them come in and out of rotation. Mostly Karimoor, Nike and a good few cheap ones from sports direct.

What are your pet hates about running? About life in general?

There's a tendency to be a bit self critical, I experience this myself sometimes. A few friends that do a bit of running tend to think I'm wasting my time running at their easy pace. Or that there's no point improving their times as they're too slow to begin with. I even find myself thinking this sometimes too, that I'll never get fast enough to be in real competition. At the end of the day though I remind myself and my friends that that's all irrelevant, comparison really is the thief of joy and the best competition you can have is with yourself. Like when I think about it, I was nowhere near the top level at hurling and I still loved it so why should running be any different? And in terms of running slower paces, it's always beneficial no matter the pace and running with company is very enjoyable. It's actually a great aspect of running, that two people with a large gap in times can still train together and get the same benefit.

In life in general, I suppose something similar, or more not appreciating slow but steady progress. Sacksian had a post in his log the other day, that he'd rather do 100 sessions at 95% perfection than 2 at 100% and get injured, blow up etc. I think that can be applied to lots of things, maybe with some things we're drifting towards "if it isn't perfect it isn't worth it", rather than applying the better logic Sacksian talked about.

    What makes you swoon?

When I first moved here I lived in a sort of student accomodation with mostly EU students and mostly girls. I'd struggle to pick a top 5 of accents, certain French ones and Portugese probably come near the top though!

When was the last time you belly laughed?

On a walk yesterday a friend was telling me about his experiences managing a team of call centre workers working from home during the pandemic. Nothing too outrageous by itself but the culmination of all the issued has him in a state of disbelief!

When was the last time you cried?

I get awful emotional hangovers sometimes :( Watched The Fox and The Hound over Christmas with a friend one day I was particularly tender, there's a few moments in that that would draw tears from a stone!

Ireland's Call or Flower of Scotland?

It's a tough one, but the 2018 6 nations match against England seals it for Flower of Scotland. I was watching in a pub near Murrayfield and the atmosphere was out of this world. I'd never seen the Scottish so confident of a win, they could just feel it in the air. The lone piper on the roof of the stadium, just the crowd singing, we could hear it from the pub. Then the piper stopped for the second half and it's just the singing, crystal clear responses to the Proud Edward lines, you just knew it would be something special. It was sang again towards the end, then over and over again all over the city all weekend. Probably the highlight of my time here so far!

What was your first impression of this forum?

The first time I ever saw it was before I started running, I looked at the DCM thread and was surprised that so many posters were actually running the event. I was used to sports forums like GAA and soccer where it's just spectators. So obviously this one would be much different!

When I started running I was impressed with the wide range of information here. Everything from beginner to almost elite, over loads of different distances. Loads of interesting discussion and in a very instructive way. Again I suppose this comes from the posters actually being the ones competing the events, rather than armchair quarterbacks with other sports!

How many push ups can do in one go?

With my elbow at the moment 0 :( I had gotten into a good routine of 5 sets of pushups 3 times a week before this happened, the reps would range from 10-15 although never to failure. I'd guess 30, maybe a few more.

Favourite season to run and why?

All of them have their upsides but I love summer nights at twighlight, just as it's cooling down. In my mind the ideal running conditions. During the first lockdown I went on a run through the city centre around 9pm, it was deserted but for some wildlife, and every landmark looked like a postcard picture in the sunset. One of the highlights of the lockdown!

Great questions shotgun, had a good think about some of them cheers :)

Not a fan of it to be honest with you, 3 reasons:

    1. He’s from Kilkenny.
    2. Drinks Tennants.
    3. Hadn’t the fookin manners to say my log was one of his favourites after picking him for this gig!!!!!!

    1. Anti Kilkenny sentiment surely has to end, Dublin have won 5 all Ireland's since we last did and will probably win 5 more before we next get 1!

    2. The Tennents is probably indefensible but in an attempt to defend it at least it's everywhere here! (Becoming less and less true, lots of breweries and chains stopped stocking it a couple of years ago it seems)

    3. There wasn't a whole lot of running going on in there the last few months, good stuff lately but too little too late!

Ok, point 1 & 2 are valid still no excuse for point 3!!.

Are there any questions you wish someone would ask but hasn't?

And if there is - what are those questions?

Just binge read this. Fair play Edinrunna, some great answers. As someone working in the same industry, particularly liked your answer to Murph_D question.

    Just one for you.

Million Euro or pounds in your case just fell off a truck into your lap?(no giving back to rightful owner)

    How would you spend it?

I like this question! Nothing I can think off right now but I may come back to it!

I was expected to be asked my favourite distance, but with only two races I suppose it's not much of a choice! The answer would probably be 5k anyway, although my opinion might change as I get to experience more distances.

    Cheers :)

Hey Lambay, thanks for the question! Sorry to hear about your injury woes lately, you were up there with Lainey withe the consistency during lockdown. Hopefully you'll be cleared when races are back and you'll be smashing PBs allo over the place.

As regards the million, interesting amount. Very significant, definitely life changing but probably not enough to sail off into the sunset living a life of luxury. Because of that, I'd have to say I'd blow it!

Few pairs of Alphaflys no doubt! I'd try to sit tight until travel is a thing again and do a lot of that. There's a lot of people who have been very good to me in various ways over the years that I'd like to bring along for different stages of that. And a few more that would be worth it for the entertainment alone.

In terms of giving, can't say I'd be likely to be a keen philanthropist with it. I'd have my reservations about the efficiency of some charities particularly some of the bigger ones. Having said that a lot of smaller, local organisations are well deserving of any help they can get, sports clubs and the likes would be an option.

    Cheers :)

    A few more from me:

    1. Greatest hurler to play the game outside Kilkenny the past 15 years and why?
    2. Your current go to tv watching & what was your favourite cartoon as a young lad?

I'll chip in on this thread...hoping I don't ask too many already asked questions...

    1. Should Cody have the right to decide himself when to resign, given it's been (relatively) so long since Kilkenny's last AI ?
    2. Can you see Dublin winning a hurling All Ireland any time in the next 5 years ?
    3. What did you think of Neil Lennon managing Hibs ?
    4. I've read a lot of Irvine Welsh's books, although it took me a while to get used to the vernacular writing style. Have you ever actually heard the words "weedgie" or "soapdoadger" in your time in Embra ?

Seamus Callanan for me, some of his single handed performances were insane. The 2015 semi final against Galway and the 2016 final against us stand out. No one could stop him in either of those games, Padraic Mannion and Joey Holden took a lot of criticism at the time but I think he would have been unplayable on both of those days regardless who was on him. The 3 Tipp-Galway semi finals between 2015 to 2017 is probably the best trilogy of games I've seen, he had a big part to play in it.

    2. Your current go to tv watching & what was your favourite cartoon as a young lad?

Recently been binging a lot of Attenborough documentaries, the recent one "Our Planet" which is on Netflix and Youtube is amazing. There's a brilliant episode about Forests which I've actually watched 3 or 4 times in the past few weeks. It ends showing drone footage of Chernobyl where loads of wildlife have returned to the area, mind blowing to see them living in the ruins of a city that humans won't return to for thousands of years.

As a young lad whatever the big thing on RTE was at the time! I'd say the Simpsons but that's still my favourite cartoon as an adult so I won't count that! I was at the right age for the Pokemon craze, I still have a stupid amount of information about them stored in the back of memory somewhere.

    Cheers B :)

Hey Wubble Wubble, thanks for the questions! Good to see your log getting a bit more active recently!

    1. Should Cody have the right to decide himself when to resign, given it's been (relatively) so long since Kilkenny's last AI ?

Absolutely not in my opinion, and I'd feel fairly strongly about it. Look, he's been a great manager and the success he's had will never be rivalled. But no one should be untouchable and that's what it's starting to feel like. He's shown a very stubborn unwillingness to adapt to certain things. And without adaptation the team will go backwards. Of course the pool of players available is not as strong as it once was, but in some ways this is exposing him a bit. It's a lot easier to have a single minded attitude and plan when you have a very willing Henry Shefflin, Tommy Walsh, JJ etc to see it through.

I think the time for change was 3 or 4 years ago now, and sport is full of examples of great managers, even players, staying on too long and when the time eventually comes the job for their succesor is so much harder because so many resources are drained. The paralells with Man Utd are very obvious, and when you see how low the expections of Utd have fallen in the last decade it would be worrying. Of course KK are not going to win the All Ireland every year but in a competition with such small numbers it should be a target. It's starting to feel like winning a Leinster or a one off game is becoming enough for a season to be considered reasonably succesful.

If it was any other manager in charge since 2016 they would have been lucky to get 2 seasons based on results. That should be the same for Cody, someones suitabilty for a position should be based on what they can do in the future not whats happened in the past. At the moment it's hard to see a Cody team winning an All Ireland, better players are getting older and their replacements aren't nearly of the same standard. This is a wider issue than just Cody but most of the problems seem to stem from an almost arrogance that everything we did 20 years ago was succesful so it will surely work again. I think a replacement and a fresh start would at least be something to reverse the trend. Look at poor Offaly! ReeReeG is traumatised from defeats to Kilkenny, it would be awful if Kilkenny started to feel the same towards Wexford - but we haven't beaten them in what feels like forever!

    2. Can you see Dublin winning a hurling All Ireland any time in the next 5 years ?

The next 5 years, no I wouldn't give them much of a chance. However the long term trend is in the right direction. They've had some great moments already, the last few years have maybe stagnated a bit though. If Con o Callaghan ever decided to switch codes I'd give it a much better chance. One of the best hurlers I've seen and he only plays a few weeks a year!

    3. What did you think of Neil Lennon managing Hibs ?

It was never boring anyway! He was reasonably good for his first few seasons, but it was inevitable that it would end in chaos. Having him over Hibs and Craig Levein over Hearts at the same time made for some great entertainment. Scottish football is filled with great characters but these 2 are up near the top.

I wasn't surprised that he went back to Celtic after Rodgers left but I was surprised they kept him on for a full season and even more surprised he's still there now. Like Cody he can't take the full blame for Celtics demise but he surely isn't helping.

    4. I've read a lot of Irvine Welsh's books, although it took me a while to get used to the vernacular writing style. Have you ever actually heard the words "weedgie" or "soapdoadger" in your time in Embra ?

I only read the Trainspotting series when I moved here and to be honest I'm not sure I would have been able without hearing the accent regularly. I found myself having to read it in an Edinburgh accent in my head. Most of the vocabulary is 100% genuine, "weedgie" is very common although "soapdoadger" not so much. There is very much an Edinburgh/Glasgow rivalry like any 2 close by cities I suppose.

I should have also put this in an answer to Comic Book Guy, the charcters even today are very relatble. The Leith area still has its fair share of Begbies, a lot of Spuds and hopefully not to the same extent but a few Sick Boy type swindlers too. I can only imagine what it was like during the time setting of the books!

    Cheers :)
