So the worst case scenario for SF is becoming the FG number one bedfellow...

Did you get your €100 goodie giveaway?

Thinking every SF voted is about a UI is the kind of thinking has FF/FG were they are in the polls.

Sorry Kermit, it's not behind a paywall to those of us that subscribe.

It's exactly what I posted above.

The poll had "Sinn Fein supporters" at 83% in favour of a united Ireland.

47% in favour of a united Ireland, but in no immediate hurry (which I'd agree with, you can't exactly go rushing into something like that)

36% supported a united Ireland, and thought it was "very important" which in my mind is meaningless anyway.

    Screenshot here.

That's what is letting them down Bruce, they've fixed mindsets. It's why I constantly point out that the newer voters attracted to Sinn Fein don't care about the troubles, they care about being locked out of the housing market.

With today's polling results shocking everyone, see how the narrative has now shifted to "ha they might be polling well, but a lot of those voters don't want a UI tomorrow"

Any port in a storm I suppose.

You seem to have misread what I posted. Read it again and then tell me the percentage of SF voters who say a UI is not important.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 141 ✭✭BKelly21

I actually I did misread it when I posted the figures above. Hands up, and offer my apologies.

    image.jpg

Why the times used sucha poor quality image is beyond me, but anyway.

The people who don't think it's "not at all important" does not mean that they wouldn't vote for a UI in a referendum either.

Look at those greens though, they're almost as pro United Ireland as the shinners. FG unsurprisingly lowest support.

But the SF number for those saying it's not important for them is increasing because they are attracting voters from non traditional SF grounds.

It's chicken and egg. To hold on to those new voters and attract more the party has to continue to moderate it's approach and move more to the center.

My question would be for Northern republicans in particular. I think a split is inevitable given the party's journey. Just a question of when?

This is the exact same path as the post civil war movements in the 20's and 30's and eventually Fianna Fail.

It's exactly the same road SF are on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 141 ✭✭BKelly21

I wouldn't agree about the split in the north, I would predict the exact opposite may happen to be honest.

Imagine the reaction from shinners North and South if they are (as predicted) going to become the largest party in the executive, and are in govt here at the same time?

For many shinners (I suspect) that will be a united island in everything but name.

Much more likely the split that's incoming will be a FF one, where some will gravitate towards FG, some SF etc.

What's people's obsession with a UI? Anyone who thinks a UI is why SF are doing so well hasn't a clue. They want a place they can afford to live and not dying on a hospital trolly.

It’s what we all want. However, who would pay for this Utopia?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,341 ✭✭✭rolling boh

United Ire sounds a nice idea but the reality is its a long way off anyone who thinks any majority at all will make it happen is deluded their would be serious conflict on the island there are thousands of unionists who would get involved .it's not a factor down here while the obvious problems ref housing and health are helping SF become popular but that won't last especially if they actually have to deal with these problems .

A utopia? is this what most other properly run european countries are? give me a break!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,329 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Shinners will certainly not make our country a ‘Utopia’ as you seem to imply, Randal.

    Give us a break.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 141 ✭✭BKelly21

    "Utopia" ? , Oh please.....

Is that what Enda Kenny envisioned when he promised to end the scandal of people languishing on trolleys? How populist of him.

As for how it's paid for, we can find money for the most expensive children's hospital in the entire world, and a broadband infrastructure that we'll not even own.

But somehow, expecting to bring the housing and health crises somewhat under control is asking for the impossible.

Do you people ever take a step back and look at the sheer idiocy on the screen?

I was simply asking the Poster I quoted to let us know who would pay for his beloved SFs promises.

Yet, it’s wandered into the Enda Kenny FG hating territory.

We’re not living through normal times. We’re almost 2 years into a pandemic that we’re not alone in struggling to cope with. No doubt that’s Enda, Leo or FGs fault.

This new 32 county jigsaw from Gerry.

seems to be creating a lot of anger about the place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,189 ✭✭✭Brucie Bonus

Aren't the government tackling these issues albeit piss poorly?

Point is trying to make the popularity of SF all about a UI is an ignorant ruse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,050 ✭✭✭Fann Linn

The same ones that are currently paying for children's hospitals, govt advisors, Mica redress, €100 electric payments and so on.

    Taxpayers.

You replied to a post regarding a UI asking who would pay for this utopia. If you weren't referring to a UI (in reply to a post about a UI), what utopia were you referring to?!

I should have clarified, The Utopia I was on about was re this post “They want a place they can afford to live and not dying on a hospital trolly.”

    MaryAnne you are quite correct.

These folk who blindly follow SF want, maybe Utopia is a bit strong, but they certainly seem to ‘want’ public services way above what we have now…………….provided someone else foots the bill for them.

That little incidental is rarely discussed……..we need to keep it front and centre.

The ‘can we afford it’ question is rarely broached along with the ‘who is going bank roll these so called improvements’ question.

I think we can rest assured if won’t be the hardcore SF supporters anyway.

Be very careful out there, working hard and bettering yourself may not be such a good idea for the future.

The ‘LazyBoy’ sofa and the Bookies biro could be the better option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 141 ✭✭BKelly21

Can you point me towards what I posted that "wandered into Enda Kenny hating territory" please?

In fact, I challenge you to find a single post of mine on the site that contains anything you could describe as "hate" towards Enda Kenny.

Do you find it easier to counter false arguments than factual ones or what is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,692 ✭✭✭Fionn1952

That is clearer. I certainly don't think SF are the answer, but if, 'not dying on a trolley bed' is your idea of utopian, you clearly have lower expectations from our society than I.

I certainly believe there is enough money wasted in the health system alone that more efficient expenditure rather than more expenditure could at least bring us a few steps closer to this so called Utopia. That's how I'd want to go about paying for it anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,329 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Fionn, many many people tried to ‘reform’ the health system………….many many people failed.

How many hundreds of millions have been pumped into the Irish health system……….what has changed…….very very little.

I salute the efforts of the fron t line staff but Health management really shouldn’t be a political issue.

If pumping money(taxpayers money) into the system. makes no impression then what does?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,692 ✭✭✭Fionn1952

If by many people you mean the same two parties back and forth, well I'd suggest that perhaps therein lies the problem, Brenner.

An awful lot of money has certainly been pumped in with very little reform achieved....it would almost make one question the level of reform desired by those making the decisions on how to spend that money and what reforms they wish to enact.

If pumping money into the system makes no impression, my suggestion would be spending the money more efficiently.....as I said in the post you replied to. I didn't suggest pumping more money in at any point.

You're not suggesting that the HSE is run in the most efficient manner possible, and it couldn't possibly be improved, are you?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,067 ✭✭✭Murph85

The housing situation and living standards will continue to decline for many. I reckon sf will come to a point over the next year or so, where they will have more support than ffg combined, in the opinion polls at least...

Yes we've had years and years of avoiding reforming!

Fionn, many many people tried to ‘reform’ the health system………….many many people failed.

Obviously we've only had the 2 main party's in government for the last century, so the above "many people" who "tried to reform" health therefore must refer to them.

I never thought I would see the day when Brendan Bendar would be advocating for a change of having either FF/FG I government Brendan Bendar.

Today must be an important milestone for you.

So how will Sinn Fein reform the health service? What are their plans and what is their strategy?

As the person who brought up reform of the health service, I'll just highlight that I very clearly said I don't think SF are the answer. I merely pointed out that not dying on a trolley and having a roof over your head is a pretty low bar for a Utopia.
