That's certainly true too. Voting against the opponent rather than for your own candidate can definitely be a powerful motivator. A big part of Trump's win was hatred of Hillary, and a big part of Biden's win was hatred of Trump.

Anything other than him winning in a landslide is going to be viewed as a giant conspiracy when Trump as the innocent victim so it really doesn't matter what way he loses, they will never accept it anyway.

Recent polling shows that only 31% of GOP voters believe that Bidens 2020 win was legitimate , down from 39% in previous polls.

The delusion is growing not shrinking and that is terrifying and depressing in equal measure.

I think even if Trump shuffles off this mortal coil, violence may be inevitable. Their society is just a mess with rather a large part of them wanting a Gilead with a side helping of racism versus a relatively functional democracy (with all its faults and failings). The US can't continue to almost teeter on the edge of an abyss forever. It's society needs to step back fix what can be fixed while also figuring out just what sort of country they are right now and what they want to be. Maybe that may mean some states going their own way as they are incompatible with the way the US is going.

The other question is, once Trump is in jail and either lost the election or been barred, and the dust has settled, what are we going to do for entertainment? Maga will just become another conspiracy theory, like flat earth or 9/11 or Elvis is alive, there is only so much mileage you can get out of that.

    Re-runs of the West Wing.

I think we could do with a period of boring US politics.

They would deserve every bullet coming back their way if they decide to take up arms and create havoc over a fair electoral loss. If they want to try it, then fcuk them. They would be completely in the wrong.

I hope the USA can talk through the issues its having at the moment, but MAGA doesn't seem like it's much for talking at the moment. They're up to their necks in conspiracy, hatred and paranoia. So, I don't know how they can be talked down from the ledge.

Maybe some kind of conflict has to happen for them to be put back in their box and for their enablers to see sense and/or be brought to justice. I hope not, for the sake of general western stability as much as anything else, but American civil society and its system of laws cannot be cowed by their threat of violence. It will have to be faced, if they're serious.

I think a conflict of some sort is inevitable at this point. The GOP are in ruins more or less, some of just resigned themselves to being outliers against the crackpots on the MAGA side.

It's interesting to see the GOP themselves saying that they have absolutely nothing to run on and nothing to show for controlling the House for the last year.

Multiple reps bemoaning that reality and on Right wing outlets as well

Andy Biggs was whining on Newsmax in the last few days about it.

They have absolutely ZERO to go back to their districts with , they've passed no legislation and achieved absolutely nothing otherwise.

That is going to hurt them in the Elections and it's hard to see what they might be able to achieve in the interim to change that.

The "impeachment" is not going to go well for them as the story they have built it in committee will crumble under open cross-examination during an actual impeachment hearing. They may not even win any votes on it given how tight their majority is and how many GOP reps are in districts that voted for Biden in 2020.

Trump has nothing either other than revenge and rehashing his 2016 plan - "Repeal Obamacare" and "Immigration!!!"

That's fine to talk about, but: how many of those MAGA cultists are in the armed forces? Or the various reserves therein. That's where things could get problematic for th federal government if there was any kind of breakaway aspects within the military. Total flight of fancy on my side but I'd worry any violence isn't necessarily from lone gunmen or weekend warriors.

Trump may have nothing other than 'revenge' to run on, but don't underestimate how snappy and visceral a message 'revenge' is. Biden doesn't really have anything so talismanic. He does have the warning of what will happen if Trump is elected, and that's absolutely valid, but not much about himself. It's what really lost it for Hillary in 2016. She had no resonant message, rather a portfolio of pandering.

It's worth remembering that Biden got the most votes for a presidential candidate in history in 2020, but Trump got the second most. Biden's going to need a similar turnout in 2024 in the event that Trump's base remains as radical and engaged. Part of that can be anti-Trump, sure, but there has to be some kind of forward-looking platform, because if Biden just wants to keep America in some sort of centrist status quo for another four years, I don't think that will be enough to really defeat MAGA long-term. It might only hold them back temporarily and let them refine their plans to send American democracy crashing even further.

So? It's still a problem that will need to be dealt with if MAGA refuses to listen. It can either be dealt with successfully and put MAGA back in its box, or unsuccessfully, perhaps resulting in a coup de tat by MAGA radicals and the establishment of martial law under Trump. If MAGA is willing to pick up arms in the event of losing a fair election, then I don't see much alternative.

    I'm assuming that's a parody.

So then I watched the video. I'm sorry I did. That is the most nauseating thing I have seen in, well, for ever really.

God made him, but he's going to chuck Trump down to the other fella when it's all said and done.

It seems to be a screengrab of Trump's Truth Social account - so I'm guessing it's not? Or maybe it was and so subtle Trump thought it geniune?

This is why so many comedians have opined that American Satire is dead in a post-Trump world - 'cos reality seems more bizarre and intangible than anything satirists could write.

Whether its real or parody, there are so many points at which it goes the wrong way in either case, its impossible to know.

I don't think it will hurt them in elections in the slightest.

Trump has nothing either other than revenge and rehashing his 2016 plan - "Repeal Obamacare" and "Immigration!!!"

That's all he needs. 74 million Americans voted for Trump in 2020 after his insane presidency where he achieved nothing. That's almost 10% more than voted in Obama in 2008 and subsequently in 2012.

If they can get any guilty verdicts or the SC goes against him, he'll still be a juggernaut. If he doesn't get negative verdicts and the SC goes with him - good luck to the Dems.

Biden's just done a campaign speech laying into Trump for a good half an hour. You know Trump isn't going to let that lie.

Nearly the worst thing about this is the fact that millions of Americans hold Trump up as a role model for themselves and their kids and families. It's genuinely disturbing and disgusting.

Not something that just emerged overnight, either. I would suspect the devotion to Trump has been a long time in the making, seeded by 30 plus years of Rush Limbaugh, Fox News and latterly social media that supercharged the already existing attitudes of entitlement, paranoia and exceptionalism.

I don't see why. The NRA's power comes from its massive membership, each of whom has a vote. Those voters aren't voting for who's in charge of the NRA when they go to the polls, they're voting for the political policies in question.

He's also 74 and been doing the job for a few decades. Whilst I doubt the timing of the retirement is an entire coincidence, it's not exactly sudden or inappropriate. The NRA isn't going to be thrown into turmoil.
