Not sure I believe the two are linked. I mean, I know there were comments from Schiff etc but there are already substantial prosecutions for people involved. The DOJ are moving up the chain.

Perhaps the DOJ know that prosecutions of Meadows etc are politically sensitive and they are using the hearings as a way to get the public onside before pressing ahead. I expect Meadows to be in some deep deep sh1t and very soon.

I would think if the Justice Department were to start an investigation, there could be some stuff they would not want released in hearings, as it would make it harder to find contradictions in witnesses statements if the witness knew what others had testified to or what information was already known. I'm sure the Committee are still keeping a lot of things close to their chest and not revealing some information like that, but if a DoJ investigation were to start (into the higher-ups like Trump himself), their requirements would obviously take preference over the Hearings, and I'm sure the DoJ would need to keep things even closer to their chest.

    All true,

However the other issue is that if the GOP take the House in November , then there absolutely will be a "Blame it on Nancy" Committee formed led by Jim Jordan once they get in and they'll just utterly flood the zone with absolute tripe.

The DOJ stuff has to be announced and in flight before the Elections and realistically needs to be by the end of September or they'd be accused of pulling an October surprise.

Charges need to be laid in the next 8/9 weeks or it will be even more politically difficult to do.

And if they are charging Trump with something, that needs to happen before he announces his 2024 campaign officially.

It doesn’t matter when trump announces there’s no immunity for candidates.

I think it's more the optics than anything else. If they charge him after he announces, he can play the card that they're trying to stop him running as a political thing more than anything else. Not that that would be true, but it'd stir up his base enough and give the GOP a talking point to try dismiss the charges as political. It's why Trump is apparently very eager to announce, because he feels it could give him at least some protection from prosecution.

Except when he declares then his little Save America grift is subject to audit and can't go straight into his pockets, which it has been

If Trump runs, he will either rip the GOP apart while losing or win the nomination.

If he is the GOP's candidate, the Dems will hold the White House and make some gains to boot.

It's definitely the optics. If the DOJ announce charges against Trump after he announces Trump and his allies will play the "The Dems are terrified of me and want to stop me being elected" - Will all be nonsense of course , but it's air-time they can avoid giving him.

He is absolutely torn between announcing to give him the perceived air cover of "you can't indict a candidate" vs. his desire to pocket as much un-audited and unaccounted for cash as possible by delaying the declaration.

As POTUS, Trump had limited options but active diplomacy with the Saudi Crown.

As a private citizen though, it's all your own volition if you want to endorse their golf tour over an American one.

Texas Republicans still haven't managed to figure out how to marry their power grid woes with the climate change reality, and its resulting in blows to the economy.

What's with you guys conveniently ignoring his defeat in 2020 including a pretty deranged response from it from both his supporters and Trump.

Yes - completely ignore what has happened since then, because that's irrelevant, right?

It wouldn't be wise to discount him.

Since 6 Jan in spite of a lot of early condemnation from key Republicans he has regained a position of power within the party. A lot of republicans believe Jan 6 was legitimate protest😪, a number that has grown between 21 and 22

He has delivered for lots of conservatives with the supreme court and it's recent decisions.

As a party they have made a lot of efforts to get control over elections which could lead to new republicans in key positions making decisions which their outed predecessor would not.

With the state of the economy, republicans will probably do well in mid terms and have a great chance of winning in 2024. The real fear is that Trump might not be the worst candidate the Republicans might put forward.

The Democrats don't have a king is waiting or anything near it to sway the middle ground; an economy in the toilet and rising crime will favour a change.

Anything is possible now in the USA with democracy in real trouble

Well, if it's not going to be trump then it's going to be a trump-lite. The GQP has made its bed. It has actively pursued the conspiracy theorists. the insurrectionists, the anti-vaxxers, the most right-wing extremist fundamentalists, the science deniers, the proudly ignorant. People who actually boast and campaign on their ignorance of science and politics. They have embraced terrorists and white supremacists. They have told their followers that dictators are to be admired and emulated. They have stated that known, nuclear-weaponed enemy states are to be praised while calling peaceful protestors traitors. They have requested, promoted, organised and praised violent insurrection. They have, and continue to, knowingly lie to steal an election. They have threatened officials and continue to promote an agenda of hate and known lies.

Even trump's ... fans will have to admit that nothing I said above can be denied.

So, even if trump doesn't run, the party will remain the same: They need the conspiracy theorists. They NEED the insurrectionists (politically and as a means of intimidation). They NEED the racists, the homophobes, the people who get their "news" from the Infowars and others. So they will court them. They will bow to any whim: A school shooting? Tighten gun laws? No. Let's instead make them more lax. As in New York.... DAYS after the last shooting. Women getting too uppity? Let's manage their bodies. Not only will it put them in their place (In the kitchen) but we also get the Jesus vote. "Minorities" voting? Let's reduce their ability to vote. Don't like the result of an election? KNOWINGLY lie and riot. Threaten to, and attempt to, murder elected officials who disagree with you. Live on TV. It's OK. People will still go online and say it never happened. It was the liberal media. That people didn't REALLY watch it live.

So yes, these are the people that the GQP has become. NOT the party that helped abolish slavery in the US. But the party that, in one sentence, simply HATES the US and everything it stands for.

And that is not going to change anytime soon. The only way this will change is if honest to god, decent people who believe in the GOP but not the GQP decide that the Dems are more aligned with their beliefs of human decency than the GQP's agenda of hate. They don't need to agree with everything. But there is a difference between the GOP's agenda of conservatism and the GQP's agenda of fear and hate. But for every decent member of society they lose, they will bring in some fear-ridden hate monger who will vote faster and vote again and again (As even their own "Investigations" found)
