OK so my old 2005 Mazda 3 is starting to give some issues and I am thinking of replacing her with a new second hand car!!

originally was thinking of an SUV style but over recent days have been scouring Carzone etc for estate cars and would like to know what your petrolheads think of these

Budget is about 15K and looking at 2014 - 2017 vintage

Based on reviews they say the Skoda Octavia is a great estate and I am thinking of it however am drawn towards the VW Golf Estate, Toyota Auris Estate and the Ford Focus Estate

Do you think these are good cars to think of?

That era Golf was not officially sold here in estate version so numbers are tiny. Have you considered a Skoda Superb?

Would ye get a new Logan MVP estate for your budget. Huge car.

I was actually thinking of a Skoda until a local dealer put me off saying they have issues after 40/50KM but speaking to a work colleague and he has a Skoda Octavia saloon and is more than happy with it, it being his second Skoda

They don't have issues after 50k kms any more than any other brand. Sure, some of them do but so do a few examples of everything on the road. Defo not high numbers of issues after 50k and the best estate car out there by a mile.
I wouldn't buy one myself I'd buy an a6 or e class but the Skoda you'll get a younger car with less miles for same money.

That’s nonsense. What was he trying to sell you?

We got one recently 2018 year. All bells and whistles and tons of room. Don't take my word but have a trawl through BRISKODA forums where you will find out all the issues (pros and cons) from other owners.

i have always had estates as they are so practical.

i have the vw golf estate 1.6 trubo excellent car
good mileage, good space but not too big either, lovely smooth drive and looks good which is unlike alot if estates.

i previously owned 2 ford focus estates but found that there was always issues with engine issues and power steering.

i also own a toyota rav - great drive and i would highly recommend it.

I have a 2015 Octavia Diesel Estate with the DSG Gearbox - Absolutely no problems
Big Labrador goes in the back if we ever get a chance to get out again.
    Lots of space etc.
    Great MPG

I got a 2016 1.4 Tsi petrol DSG Octavia Estate recently and I really like it. Huge boot. Make sure you get one with a false floor in the boot to eliminate the load lip.

Looking at an estate myself. Could really do with the big boot. Toying between a Skoda superb and Audi A4. Octavia looks decent too but the Superb just looks that step up.

The Audi comes at a premium of about 4k extra for a similar year Skoda but it has a smaller boot. Not a huge amount of superbs around in main Skoda dealers and the biggest problem at the moment is getting the chance to take a few for a spin.

How have you found garages OP? With all the restrictions are they keen to sell or happy to sit it out.

Have a 2010 Passat CC to trade in or sell privately, so putting some feelers out there at moment to get an idea of what I'd get for my own.

Thats probably what they go for though, they hold their value exceptionally well and whatever you pay you'll get a good chunk back if the golf estate holds value like the standard golf hatchback.
Only thing is, you'd move up a class or 2 for much the same money.
You seem to like the golf though so worth shortlisting. If you want to stay in volkswagen stable though, you'll find a passat for much the same money

Yeah looked at some Passats last night most are in the 2.0L range was really looking for a 2 litre car as I was thinking that in new future government policy will drive up motor tax - I am probably totally wrong on this but in back of my head am thinking that

Also Passat is a lot bigger than a golf estate.

am open to other cars/ vendors too such as this for example...

Renault reliability has improved vastly in the last 10+ years. They even gave 5 year warranties on their cars in that time.

In my Family, we have presently , 2 Superbs, 2 Octavias and previously there was a Skoda Roomster, bought new in 2008, traded in @400'000 + klms...and still driving around. Previous to this, going back 10 years, I drove a Octavia too. Guess what our next cars will be??? We never had any major issues with any of them....serviced on time, and tyres wipers . brake pads etc. replaced as needed, orv even before.

i got a kia ceed estate a couple off years ago not disappointed with it

    how about

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/kia-ceed-1-6-crdi-134bhp-6-sp-man-isg-gt-line/24203554

The other half has one of these from new and it has been excellent. It's diesel, so you need to be doing the miles. I've heard the 1.4 is very slow, so look for a 1.6.

That’s a really bad reason to rule a good car out.
The VW 2.0 is far superior to the 1.6 by the way and still very economical.

That Golf you posted is pretty grim inside with all the silver bits and the small looking screen.

Yep. They’re narrow enough, but they’re laid out well in the back and the seat is wide for a small car. They’ve got a huge boot, but at the end of it, this is still basically a supermini estate.

Have a 09 Passat 2.0 TDI Highline, love it, it is at 340k km and still not a bother on it. Ok 2 glow plugs are gone but she starts first time every time. Even last week with the cold after been sat up for 3 weeks over christmas not a bother on start up.

On motor ways she is mean as a caven man on diesel, would get 22km/l and I average 18.5km/l over all.

The fold flat back seats are brilliant for large loads, the only problem is I have become the go too guy when someone needs to move house.

The Highline with aircon leather seats are nice to have and make long drives easy.

But she is long, very long, I would not recommend to someone who is not expert at parallel parking

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I had one for over 10 years, not one electrical issue, actually no issues at all, bar track rods due to the ****ty road I live on.

You could have a look at the last generation Volvo V60.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/152-volvo-v60-d3-150bhp-r-design-nav-94k-mls/26396655

Here is a link, I have no idea what that particular car is like. But I bought one last year from the UK and it is a really nice place to be, haven't had a service yet so can't advise on that as a cost but I can't imagine it will be too crazy. Planning on going to Tom Scully in Clontarf when it is needed.

I had a 2006 estate passat, same generation as you 2009 i belive. Funnily enough, the estate is 10mm shorter than the saloon. Hows that for a useless bit of trivia

I moved from a long list of saloons to a 5series estate 2 years ago and don’t know how i would do without the estate now.

I also am going to stick with estates for the next car as Much prefer them to SUVs

Everyone in the family borrows it for moving stuff.

FYI Skoda octavia is the same car as a Golf, same engine gearbox etc, just different body panels. I definitely wouldn’t be put off one

I bought an 2009 A6 with high mileage so it was pretty cheap, love it used to have to borrow parents Tuscon if ever had to carry anything. It also feels a bit nippier and more stable on road than an SUV. It is also very nice inside and very comfortable to drive. Also am a golfer so was actually one of the main reasons I got it was for the clubs. Only issue with mine one was parking sensors not working and too expensive to get fixed so very wary of size when parking.
Think will stick with old A6s going forward as don't think could ever afford a new one.

I've a 131 Megane Estate automatic with 190k on the clock.
Apart from it's regular (though not often) service @24k and a replacement timing belt (at the required mileage) it's never given me a days trouble. Couldn't fault it except for the back seats not folding flat. And that's only an issue when I'm sleeping in it - it doubles as my "camper" when I'm away fishing :-)

Would you consider a fiat tipo estate. Nice looking car and excellent value. Fiat are well improved in recent years. Personally I like the tipo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,129 ✭✭✭kirving

If you want space, take a look at an E-Class. Easily got for 15k.

Rented a Megane estate a few days after selling mine, and it didn't come anywhere close in terms of refinement, comfort or space.

They would all be good sensible choices. Personally I don’t like that generation Civic interior, and I’d be lukewarm about the styling, but it’s probably the most interesting of that lot.

The Auris is quite well specced for a Toyota. If power isn’t a priority then it’s probably the best all rounder. Parts will be the cheapest of them all.

There’s nothing between the Kia and Hyundai, they’re basically the same thing. Kia probably more desirable than the Hyundai as you won’t get mistaken for a Garda car.

It’s all very marginal tbh, they’re all roughly as good as each other.

Any opinions on the Kia Optima sportswagon? Very nice looking car, decent spec and most would still have a few years of warranty left in them. Seem to be discontinued in Ireland though. Did they not sell well?

In America it seems to be replaced by a Kia K5.
