But how does that work? Just curiosity on my behalf as I teach English and History, I just can't get my head around organising it. Maybe I'm being dim.

I'm wondering if they are banking on the huge majority taking predicted grades and then trying to get previous examiners to call around and mop up the remainder at schools near their own.

As far as I can tell that's 2021 speak for 'calculated grade'

It's a CG 2020 with SEC involved for 2021. Tbh, SEC involvement is brilliant. They're usually very efficient, even though their equipment etc can be lagging behind the times.

I too see some comfort in this. The SEC know their onions, in fairness.

The SEC will also spot things that they DES wouldn't have last year. I'm definitely more comfortable with them running the show and would give them massive points for fairness and transparency normally so hopefully that will be the case.

This says orals will be organised by schools locally.

That can only happen if teachers are idiot enough to agree to it.

The orals were always organised by the SEC. They know exactly how to run, conduct, mark and standardise such exams. Anything less, any adhoc cobbling together by neigbourhoring schools has to be resisted. It will only add to confusion and stress.

It must be said that that the department of education have not considered the current 5th year group in this. I have no doubt grades will be overinflated this year and there is bound to be a lot reapplying to the cao next year to try get a place in college when points go down like we have seen this year.

Whilst the unions have got a lot of bad press lately. they seem like the only ones to me that were genuinely interested in keeping things fair for everyone and looking at the bigger picture.

A lot of happy sixth years today but id bet a lot of disappointed 5th years.

My understanding is that these teachers would conduct the interview, but the sec would mark them in the summer.

It’s not something I would engage with, tbh. I’d engage with the sec, but not offer myself to other schools on an ad hoc basis.

Fair point, but the cynical side of me says that if the DES don't care about standards, why should the teachers be the lone voice shouting into the void, and getting nothing only abuse for it?

I was obsessive last year in calculating grades, checking over work and copies, all sorts. Kids randomly downgraded, other not, no reasoning. It's hard to stay positive or invested when you know they'll keep changing the goalposts and we won't know the half of it.

I do hope the SEC just take it over completely now, take the DES out of it.

Yeah, me too. Kinda got burned last year by playing it too straight. Won't get fooled again.

I think you might be right about DES. I think Norma and by extention DES were very interested in doing what was popular, not what was right by all students.

Teachers shouldn't be the only ones. Unless you're a 5th year (parent of one) or involved in education you would see the knock on effects. It would not have crossed the minds of the general population.

I am wondering, if anyone can tell me how members of the ISSU are chosen? Is it just 6th years consulted. They are suppose to represent all students not just 6th years. All be it, with the current situation it would have been very difficult for 5th years to speak up.

Maybe I'm naive, but I wouldn't blame the ISSU all that much. They were bound to go for what was seen as the easier option. It's a sign of the complete lack of competence in the DES that the whole situation basically turned into a social media shouting match. Noise equalled success. The ISSU were probably as entitled to shout as anyone.

So they are suggesting that teachers from one school mix with students from other schools
Leaving aside the logistics of it all
That is flying in the face of public health advice

The orals and so practicals will not go ahead . The “plan “ for them is ludicrous
Nothing that counts towards a state exam should be organized at “local level”
    It’s a cop out
I’ve a feeling the unions won’t agree to it

I'm presuming that they are hoping it will run on the same basis that the old JC orals used to run, which were optional. As far as I know the school had to organise an examiner for that.

I'd imagine they are counting on both schools at a local level and the unions nationally to pull the plug on this sham.

What role will the SEC actually play?? Will the CG still be compiled and entered by someone at the school?

What’s the difference between last years grade and a SEC accredited grade? Sorry but I’m lost.

I have a son in 6th year and he is happy with this decision. When a choice between CGs and exams was suggested I expected that out would be one or the other. With the choice to do both it means that he can drop one or two subjects with a heavy workload and he might be expecting H3/H4/H5 in favor of the subjects where he thinks he can get H1/H2. He always wanted the challenge of doing the exams but was worried that there would be a difference between calculated based and exam results.

I agree with others that 5th years are now getting shafted and it will be interesting to see what is done for them next year. My daughter is in TY so she's will be doing LC in 2023 when the effects of this are still being felt. They have had a complete waste of a year with very few classes online and few projects, activities etc.

I think with all the grades coming out at the same time in August and students getting the higher of either grade for each subject, it will help them all move on to college, PLC, work etc in September. The delay with the winter leaving cert this year meant there was always going to be a cohort who didn't move on, along with anyone who naturally deferred.

That's a definite positive I'm glad to see, I hope they stick to it. The students deserve to start college at a normal time and to have a more normal college experience after the last couple of years.

I saw the girl on Matt Cooper - she had valid points.

What did the ISSU say about it?
