What a pathetic forecast. I was sure it would snow.

    Ah well.

    When is next heatwave due

Belfast Aldergrove still down with a slight chance of snow showers throughout the day, becoming slightly heavier overnight. Only a slight chance.

Wait to see all the drone owners descending on local mountain for their retweet from bbc news forecasters.., always the same people... not really a fair competition.

Really random snowline. Snow at sea level and nothing at 500 feet

A nice power cut wouldn't go a miss either, just like the old days. Couldn't even tell you the last time we had a power cut!

Be careful what you wish for. With the Green Party policies being implemented and power stations being shut down power cuts could become a thing in the near future.

I think there is 4cm up here, not much due to the diversion of the showers to the SE. It is subzero but not too cold.

    Just cloudy here and cold.

I think you could well have some settling snow before tomorrow morning.

Yep plenty of snow to fairly low levels in west Donegal, nothing here closer to the sea but looking inland everything is white with a good covering on all the hills

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,023 ✭✭✭Donegal Storm

    maps.ie says 265m

From looking at the hills around here I'd guess lying snow level is around 200m though there's a patchy covering to maybe under 100m

Some accumulation at Ballypatrick Forest (156 m amsl) during this morning, 5 cm lying snow at midday. None of the other NI stations was reporting lying snow.

Morning photos, taken near the place where Sligo, Mayo and Roscommon meet one another. ;)

Yeah, I know, a bit blurry. But shot from quite a distance. As an example - Benbulben is 47 km away from me.

I am back from my 6 mile hike. At midday the Freezing level appeared to be about 900-1000 feet as the snow above that was frozen solid. It might be a little higher now.

What surprised me was the partially frozen lake. I don’t believe it fell below -2c last night. I assumed one would need several nights of -5c or less for a frozen lake no?

What do people think about this “event” tonight? The Met Office are bugging it up referencing snow lying at low levels but it appears to be coming with warmer air so how is that going to materialise?

AFAIR forecast for Ulster says there will be -2 to +2 in terms of air temperature, more than likely colder on the ground level. So quite a good chance for snow sticking, IMO. :)

The freezing level seems to rise to 700m though.

Yeah back into the showery crap. Temp rising and becoming more marginal. I would prefer that we dropped below freezing first.

Why can’t we just have a couple of days of nice crisp weather? I hate this showery nonsense

It’s not going to snow low down. We’re back to the same nonsense we had last night except with a rising freezing level.

    My humidity is 94%..., awful

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,023 ✭✭✭Donegal Storm

Lots of sleet showers here right on the coast, some nice big snowflakes in the mix so I'd imagine anywhere with a bit of height should still be seeing more snow tonight

Snow shower east of Castlebar now. Starting to stick also.

Looks like plenty of potential tonight, no shortage of precipitation from showers in N and NW counties and then the outer edges of the occluded front look to pass down over the Eastern side of the country into tomorrow ,will be interesting to see if that produces snow and even in the SW looks like we could clip a trough and end up with some high terrain snow by morning. Lots of interest all over the island.

EURO 4 looks very active tonight/ early morning

What happened to the warm area? Last night when I looked we had -2c 850hPa coming in over Northern Ireland and freezing levels rising to 800 metres. Has that gone now?

Great pictures. Just had a light rain shower. The clouds look a bit snowy further to the north, so maybe i'll get lucky later.

Thought the same thing myself late this afternoon as I could see the cloud tops of showers approaching the
North Mayo coast. They had that wintry look about them. Sure enough we have already seen some flakes this eve which is promising. A few more showers due overnight also. A bit of radar watching ahead tonight I think!

Next possible event is Saturdays though the freezing level is 500 metres. Think I’ve learn’t my lesson on that and will have a mental note looking for 200 metre-300 metre freezing level to ensure snow to sea level.
