Suck might be a bit harsh, maybe doesn't suit me might be better. They're giving me blisters on the back right heel. They felt relatively comfortable at first, and i figured they'd just need to be broken in, but 10 or so rounds in and its still quite sore after walking a while. These are the ones i got. Pictures have a very narrow heel, which is definitely true.

I got a pair of footjoy premier (whatever the expensive ones were (I had a voucher)). Took ages to break in, more than 10 rounds but they're great now.

Picked up Ecco S-Three BOA shoes last week for €150 on a sale in McGuirks. Very comfortable and good grip as well.

Played Druids glen Tuesday and forgot to bring a sleeve of TP5 out of the box so said I’d pick up a sleeve of Prov1 and a ball marker there , TWENTY FIVE EURO for a sleeve of Prov1’s. Paid for my round and left the pro shop

Cant beat Under Armour for golf shoes imo. I usually get the ones for around €110

Even the €15 back in the day was a farce

Golf ball prices (like a lot of other things) are gone out of control unless buying in bulk

The Adidas Code Chaos once I got about last October were comfortable from day 1. Didn't need any breaking in. Probably most comfortable ones I've ever owned

  • Administrators Posts: 54,091 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Can vouch for these, they are very comfy.

I thought the BOA thing would be really gimmicky but it's actually really handy, so quick to take them on and off.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,726 ✭✭✭dan_ep82

I got the 3 for 4 in TP5x so 48 for 150 and should do me until early next year. But still, most shops are 15-16 for premium balls, thats a pure money grab

Where did you get fit? toying with the idea myself. Best of luck with the new sticks!

Getting fit was the best thing I ever did. I ended up with stiffer and higher launching shafts for my irons and it has changed my game. I was using some strongly lofted GI irons before. Dispersion was wild and couldn't hold a green for the life of me but now I'm sticking to it like glue no matter the weather even with a 5 iron. Dropped 4-5 shots over the last couple of casual rounds I've played whilst I've been getting used to them.

Only way to go. So if you are thinking of it, would recommend it. Can even just head into McGuirks or Halpenny and play about with a few different head/shaft combos on the trackman and see how you go.

Just went to my club pro, been getting lessons from him so wanted to stick with him as he was very familiar with my swing and how we've been changing it over the past few months.

I think a lot of people go to the likes of ForeGolf.

Naas GC, Bernard Quigley is a great shout for lessons. A top guy to deal with and very knowledgeable.

Yeah, think she struggled with conditions early in the season, playing in Asia and Africa.

Has had a couple of good weeks in a row playing back in Europe

im thinking of getting fitted for some irons, ive never got fitted for any clubs before so im wondering where the best spots to go to are ?? Ive heard good and bad things about fore golf. O’dwyers and carton house seem to be decent by the sound of things. Id rather go somewhere that has grass to hit off as im not a big fan of simulaters…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,634 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

In foregolf, you'll be hitting off a mat, but out into a range rather than against a sim.

I thought the experience was great myself, but it's not cheap.

McGuirks in Kinsealy will do a fitting too, again off mats, but hitting out into a range too, so you can see the flight.

I'm pretty sure Carton is the same, hitting off a mat, but out into the range.

A few clubs will run random fitting days, but usually for specific brands. Castlewarden run then a few times a year and they have a range there with a mix of mats and grass range areas.

@benny79 did one down Waterford direction I think and was very impressed. Think @Break80 went to the same spot

spent winter trying to sort out my driving which was killing me all last year. Have it at a much more acceptable level now but I literally cannot hit a green from inside 100 yards. I’ve lost all sense of feel, confidence or whatever with a wedge in my hand. Especially from the fairway. Costing me many shots per round now. Mad game. May get more lessons.

Happens to us all mate. But I suppose that chase for perfection and contentment in our game is what keeps us all coming back. We are gluttons for punishment.

A lesson is a good shout but sometimes it could just be a mental thing, especially if it is something you were decent at before. Spend some time on the pitching greens and go back to basics, see how you go.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

I had a lesson in Carton last week. Was just 30 mins, but was pretty good. I've just one thing to focus on for now, regarding my rotation/ball striking. I had so many things going through my head recently (club face, hips, stronger grip etc…), that's nice to be able to focus on one thing for now.

Played on Saturday night, but was shite bar a few really good shots (including my longest ever drive). To be expected though, and looking forward to getting out again this week if possible.

    Just rock up.

2.50 for a small bucket of balls (approx 20-25)

4.50 for a bigger bucket (approx 40-50 balls)

You don't get tokens in the shop, etc… its just a tap of a card at the dispenser.

There are mats and grass sections, but no covered bays, so keep an eye on the weather.

That's great I've been going down to Palmerston but castle warden is lot handier to pop out to at lunch time :-) Thanks for the info

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,634 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Nice pitching area beside the range with practice bunkers too if you want to do more than just bang balls down the range

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,029 ✭✭✭paulos53

Another strong round from Lauren Walsh, this time in the Scandinavian Mixed which is a shared event with the mens European Tour. A bogey free round of -5 and currently 2 shots off the lead in 3rd place.

To put the importance of this week into perspective, the prizemoney for 40th place is similar to the money that she won for 4th place in France 2 weeks ago.

It's a tough job to support yourself on tour working through the minors.

Played a round with Lauren's dad earlier in the year and he was talking about how hard, and costly it is.

They ran a fundraiser weekend in Castlewarden for her, and I think somewhere around 20k was raised. I think in her speech afterwards she mentioned that it would maybe get her through maybe 5-6 weeks

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Everyone - its really tough for up and coming players to sustain themselves on the minor tours.

PGA - lets give Rory and Tiger another few hundred million quid 😫

My club has a 2 person stableford scramble coming up. I’m familiar with stroke play scrambles but how do you calculate shots in a 2 person stableford scramble? Calculate individual shots and divide the total by 2? Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,634 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Is it a Texas or Champagne Scramble?

Was playing a competition recently and had an interesting scenario that lead to some disagreement.

Hole was a par 3 over water. Player hit ball into reeds in it but didn't see a splash. There was a slim chance the ball wasn't in the penalty area and even if it wasn't there, there was no out of bounds or chance of losing ball in general play, I.e no long rough it could've been lost in.

Player calls a provisional ball and I mentioned that when ball is certain or virtually certain to be in a hazard you can't call a provisional since stroke and distance relief is one of the options for hitting into penalty area (yellow stakes in this instance).

They didn't take this well, I wasn't trying to be a meanbut rather let them know to avoid further penalty strokes but they didn't take it well and things got pretty icy. They asked what can they do. I mentioned that they can of course tee off again via stroke and distance or go up and take line of sight relief.

They basically didn't want to walk up and check before taking penalty relief. I mentioned they don't need to since it was virtually certain to be in penalty area but you can't call a provisional in this scenario.

My fear was, and I've seen this before was player hits ball and it's certain or virtually certain to be in penalty are, they call a "provisional" which they hit and ends up in a bad place. They then walk up and take line of sight or 2 club lengths (if red stakes), thus gaining an advantage.

It's a tricky situation but want to make sure I was in the right. In hindsight, I should've just said nothing to avoid the conflict.

  • Registered Users Posts: 127 ✭✭zocklie

I know its a tricky situation, but you either make them aware of the rules and handle it correctly, or say nothing and then when they break them you have to inform them they've incurred a penalty.

Them being sour is just their ignorance of the rules shining through, which is a common occurrence I've noticed..

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,590 ✭✭✭blue note

A slightly strange reaction from him. I'd have expected most people to be grateful to be informed of a rule break before they break it.

I can see why someone would (without trying to gain an advantage) want to play a provisional in this situation, but the rule is the rule and it's not allowed. We're not allowed to choose when to ignore them. I wouldn't think about it again, he just reacted in a way that he shouldn't.

I absolutely wouldn't do what zocklie suggests and let him break the rule and then inform him of his penalty. If you did that and someone reacted badly I wouldn't blame them.

Just to mention, check if there's a local rule that allows a provisional on the hole. I know there is one in Corballis on the 9th. I assume it's not the only one in the country.

Anyone get the feeling that the thing between their ears is never going to let them become a good golfer? All the practice and everything else necessary in the world, but I still can't just stand on a tee, be comfortable and swing it well for a round. Excruciating stuff!

Golf is over complicated. Hit the ball, find it, hit it again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,726 ✭✭✭dan_ep82

Used to be like this, still am at times. Tough tee shot, bad lie in a bunker and long dead etc

Don't know when it stopped affecting me so much but thinking of it now I just take the bad shots and know I can make up the score somewhere else . Do your pre shot routine and set up then just wail on it, worst thing that can happen is you hit a bad shot. I'm always surprised how good a nervy shot turns out if i commit to it fully no matter the outcome. Still hit some awful ones too

  • Registered Users Posts: 695 ✭✭✭fungie

Part of the issue was the 2 other members of the four-ball also disagreed and that "of course provisionals are allowed" so I felt pretty uncomfortable, even though I was pretty confident I was correct but felt ganged up on a bit.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,726 ✭✭✭dan_ep82

Happened in Ardee, Par3 over water reeds obscuring the hazard. People were hitting “provisionals” then finding their ball and hitting it. Big email and a drop zone was put in to clear it up. A lot of similar reactions were had as yours above but unless the local rule is in place it is what it is.

This is essentially the title of the thread. Random golf thoughts.

If only I could stop having them while swinging the club.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,962 ✭✭✭Dr Turk Turkelton

Nonsense,a nice simple sequence of thoughts makes swinging the club easy.

You get at least 1.5 seconds to get all these thoughts through your brain

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

So what is the rule with not being allowed to hit a provisional? Surely if you're not 100% sure that it's gone, you hit one?

    Post edited by Kiith on

For balls you fear are lost or OB, you can play a provisional. For balls you fear are in a hazard you can't.

If you think about it, if it's OB, you don't have the option of playing it so your provisional is in play. If you worried it's lost and you find it the found ball is in play. The problem would be if you find your ball in the hazard - then would you have the choice of which ball is in play?

One question for anyone who knows though regarding the new rule about drops for OB - how does this affect provisionals? If I'm correct, you're allowed to drop at a 2 stroke penalty from where it went out of bounds. If youplay a provisional are you choosing to not avail of this? Presumably you can't play a provisional and then decide to drop with the 2 stroke penalty?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,634 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Think the new rule is only implemented as a local rule, so unless stated wouldny be in play
