Boxing Thread 04/12 (Spence v Garcia, Saunders v Murray, Yarde v Arthur)

    Decent weekend of boxing.

Saunders v Murray tonight quite underwhelming. Got a feeling it might be a little bit more competitive than people are expecting but can't see past Saunders winning clear on points. James Tennyson on the undercard. Easily the most exciting Irish fighter to watch at the moment.

Yarde v Arthur on BT Saturday should be a very good competitive fight. Arthur getting underrated coming into it a bit I think. Got very good basics. Just think Yarde might have a little too much for him.

Spence v Garcia an interesting one now that Spence is coming off the car crash. Expecting him to fight a conservative fight on the outside to avoid any danger and win clear enough on points. Garcia always had a granite chin so would be extremely impressed if Spence stops him. Could get interesting if Spence gets drawn into a fight though and his punch resistance is tested. Just think he'll likely be able to avoid that against a smaller fighter like Garcia and beat him behind the jab a bit like he did against Mikey.

Not looking good for Sky viewers tonight. The reception is desperate!

It's like two people hammering each other to death with feather dusters.

You give Murray any chance, walshb? Very surprised to see how good condition Billy Joe was in.

To be fair to him, Billy Joe has supreme confidence, and always shows up on the big nights.

Murray at his best was never near great. Euro level at best!

He’s far too slow and old now...

BJS too fast, fresh and too much movement and overall speed..

    BJS career has been dreadful..

His best win was against David Lemieux 3-4 years ago...dreadful career..

What big nights has he even had?

    Fought nobody!

Well that was quick. Saunders up next.

I'm with you on Saunders, seems like he just doesn't fancy the Canelo fight, and possibly hoping to take GGG on the way down. It's ridiculous he has been allowed to be so in-active and still be a belt holder.

Hes dodged everybody, probably knows he can’t hang with the likes of triple g and Canelo. Eubank jr would bash him in a rematch.

Would be absolutely fantastic if bjs gets his arse handed to him in a plate here, unlikely as it is.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,415 ✭✭✭generalgerry

That must have been the most understated introduction of Diamante's career.

38, I reckon I’d have a chance against this lad meself.

Might be the best thing that ever happened to him for his own career.

BJS doesn't really look to be in shape. It's another terrible fight.

Pitter patter 95 percent punches not landing clean?

    A glorified spar

"Augmented sound" - I presume that is where the both the commentators and the fake crowd shout for the Matchroom fighter?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,910 ✭✭✭begbysback

Commentators didn’t even mention the shoulder

It's as if BJS is constantly auditioning to be taken on by a big name not being impressive. Always makes a meal out of easy jobs.

I can see Eddie pairing him with Andrade, two underachievers.

    Yeah I was thinking that!!

Murray has lasted to the last four rounds, he surely has to throw the kitchen sink at Saunders now.

I think a non Matchroom fighter would have got docked a point there.

He may as well go for it, he’s taken an uppercut flush without flinching

Hearn has some neck putting this fight on.

"It just hasn't happened for him"

Nonsense, he got the offer of the Canelo fight and he was out of shape. He's dodged everybody he thought that he was not in the same class as. He's a great fighter but you can't say that he was proactively tried to fight the best fighters in his weight division in their prime.

How is he a great fighter?

Never once fought or beat a close to elite fighter

And looks crap tonight against a washed up mummy!

The guy has incredible natural talent, but he's not a good pro. Won't win any fans with tonight I think, in spite of Sky's admiration for him.

Interesting comments from hearne saying the problem with Saunders is that he is never in shape at short notice. He asked him not to put too much weight on over Christmas.
Basically I take it as meaning Smith got the Canelo fight because Saunders wasn't prepared.

He definitely didn't look in condition tonight anyway.

You could also argue his promoter should be able to get the fights done with proper notice.

It sounds like BJS needs to know who and when his next opponent is while walking out of the ring to stay focused too though.

Billy Joe is going to pay for not being professional outside the ring. If only he had Chris Eubank Jr's dedication to fitness (or vice versa, CJ had his ability) you'd possibly have a great boxer. Sadly at this stage it just won't happen for either of them.

Murray was so unlucky vs sturm, Martinez . Plenty poorer fighters won world titles. Much respect

Yarde v Arthur about to start now. Surprised by the lack of interest tbh. Should be a good fight.

Cagey opener in the yarde fight. Arthur probably landing the better jabs to sneak it.

Arthur's jab is legit world class

Arthur schooling Yarde at the moment. Tame enough affair however.

There was a rumour that Arthur hurt his right hand in the warm up. Think he's thrown it twice. Lucky his jab is so good but you'd think eventually Yarde realises this and ups the pressure. Whether he has the gas tank to do it is the other thing.

    Yeh.

Was thinking he has only been jabbing and moving backwards mostly..

Yarde spending too much time trying to counter a lad that is moving backwards and feinting.. makes no sense..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,027 ✭✭✭✭titan18

Lots of those rounds too close to call as feck all happened. I think Arthur fought his best fight that he could whereas Yarde didn't do enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Well deserved win for Arthur. The judge that came up with that score to Yarde should never be let near a boxing ring again.
I thought it was a clear two round win for Arthur personally.
I wouldn't be complaining too much if he'd lost it by a round though.

    Here we go again...

Loads very close difficult rds to score...

Ya, lot of rounds were very 50/50 to me. I don't think round 1 had a punch landed so that could easily have gone to either fight depending on what the judge prefers.

To me that fight was probably 55/45 to Arthur but could easily have swung the other way.

Agreed. The scores some of these judges come up with are simply mind boggling. How he can say 117-111 Yarde is just crazy. You would expect three so called experts to come up with scores that are somewhat close to each other. It's as if he was watching a different fight to the two other judges.

    terrible fight.
Yarde lost to someone who wouldnt throw a right hand.
