    I'm considering installing a nest protect in an outbuilding so I have smoke detection capabilities out there. Do the phone notifications work even if your phone is on silent, e.g. at night?

    Yeah, the notifications go off even if the phone is on silent, I think you can set it to override if the phone is in do not disturb mode as well.
