Quick one, trying to breath the last bit of life into an old machine that's getting bottlenecked by RAM (regularly enough hitting 100% usage). It currently has 2*4GB sticks of DDR3 1866MHZ in it. I've just bought 2*8GB of DDR3 1866MHZ to go in. Different manufacturer unfortunately as my orginals shockingly aren't on sale 7years later.

Can these go in addition to the 8 already? If so what configuration is best? I'd guess at 8,4,8,4? No idea.

Lookup the manual for your motherboard, it should tell if the combo is supported and how to install it.

Hmm I looked in the manual there and it looks like they need to be identical types? It says that all 4 slots can be filled but not much more.

Leave the 2 sticks of 4gb ram in because its stable..then slot in the other 2 8gb sticks in empty memory slots...If it remains stable then your good to go..if not just try the reverse

Some motherboards require the same dimms in slot 1A and 1B and same dimms in slot 2A and 2B.

    So it could be 4 8 4 8 placement.

Nice one, cheers guys. Worst case I'll end up on 16GB anyway.

Will 4 & 8GB pairs run in dual channel?

Hmmm. So I booted up fine first time after just sticking in the 2 new sticks into slot 2 & 4. all fine messing with chrome etc. first bit of proper stress has got me to a blue screen though. Going to experiment after work by removing the two old sticks.

Got impatient and took the two 4GBs out so now have the 16 in there on a stress test, all seems to be going fine though, I won't be greedy and I'll leave it at that I think.

16GB for day to day use is loads in fairness.

It's got football manager ticking along nicely with chrome left open at the same time
