Convex Roadside Mirror

Lime Tree Farm

I need to have a Convex Mirror erected on an outfarm entrance to a busy road. Having to push the nose of the tractor too far into the road the get a view is the issue.

Any recommendation as to what to buy, size, weatherproofed, etc. Advice welcome.

Probably not as handy but I saw a contractor with a mirror fitted at the end of the bonnet on a tractor for this purpose.

I thought it was a great idea as they had it wherever they were and no problems with them getting vandalised etc.

It will be the Convex or whatever type of one for the front of the tractor, if I can locate one. Anyone here have one.

Ya know a contractor that uses mirrors on the bonnet. Thought it was a great idea, bound to have saved a near miss or accident over the years

It might actually be the way to go. Technology is getting more affordable all the time. A small magnetic camera could easily be fitted or removed from the front of the tractor as needed.

A neighbour here fitted a mirror at a concealed entrance. Probably about 15 years ago now. It was absolutely useless from the first day. Maybe he just bought a bad one, or they've improved them since, but it was a waste of time....

Trucks have to have convex/cyclops mirrors. Most motor factors would have a range of them.

I don't know, but will ask the local councillor.

Cameras and tractor mounted mirrors are fine if that is the only thing coming out that gap. And they need minding too. A good roadside mirror will help everyone.

There is a telegraph pole right beside the entrance, didn't think you would be allowed use that.

The bonnet mounted mirror isn't a new idea. 30 odd years ago Gay Byrne would have would be inventors on the LLS every so often. There would be a few judges on giving their verdict. I remember a lad showing one of these bonnet mounted mirror on it one time. His idea didn't get a massive reception at the time.
On the pole mounted convex mirror get a good big one 2ft. If its small the oncoming images will be very small. If you see an image approaching stop. The size of the image is not a great indication of how far away the vehicle is and they can be on top of you in a shot.

Tom Bolger has very neat tyres on his pit.


He might be safer just keeping the tops of the hedges tidy than relying on the mirrors on the other photo.

Another option instead of a mirror, is to get a piece of polished stainless steel folded at 90 degrees, and mount that on a post, it would give you a view from both sides.

I put this up recently at the entrance. Makes things much safer. On wet or foggy morning condensation might build up at the top of the mirror just under the cover.

Clamps come with the mirrors. I got a lengt of 10ft steel pipe. Dug a hole 2ft deep put it in the pipe and some quick set cement in with some stone and that was it.

Yep, I have a 2ft one, it's a lot better than nothing but how far away cars are can be deceptive, I've often see a small speck in the mirror and before you know it that car will be on top of you. Think I got one on Amazon for 30 euro ish.

That's the problem with convex mirrors. You're not getting a true image

2 folk killed near me tonight by a tractor with loader coming out of a field.
Car was apparently overtaking a slower moving vehicle. Over took it fine and was just about to move into lane again when a tractor with loader emerged from field and killed both occupants on that side.

We've one to put up ourselves. Whatever you're for putting up, get it done. Wouldn't want anyone to have that on their conscience.
