    Hi,
I;m looking to buy a small car for my 18 year old daughter. Have a budget of €5-7k and the engine size should be 1.2 or lower for insurance.

Any ideas what to buy and where?

Insurance would be a major factor here. So safe yet with appeal and not too expensive.

    How about Clio? as below

Small is best for young drivers. Easy to park and know your corners.

    Honda Jazz.
Hyundai i10 (go for the SE Connect)

A lovely Clio that. Would insurance not be a problem do considering it's nearly 10 years old?

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

If I was buying the car for an 18 year old ,the other factor is be including would be negative street cred .. the least cool car possible ..the one you'd be happy to get you places , but you're not going to end up driving your mates everywhere .. or try to drive stupidly fast down country roads ....
But then maybe I'm just remembering what I was like at 18...

Need to talk to insurers but I think it's over 10 years that raised questions. Anyway here's another..younger

Don't you have to be over 70?

    I second the Hoda Jazz.

    You would get a nice 132 seat ibiza 1 2 diesel for 6 to 7k .

    Nissan Leaf or Zoe?
There's one of each on carzone in that budget.

No thread is safe... Seriously though, there's no young lad going to be caught dead in either of those yokes. I wouldn't drive any of them and I'm ancient!! ( In the eyes of an 18 year old)

3 pot 1L Yaris. Slow as feck, yet reasonably easy to work on....

AHH lads I know ye mean well but some of the yokes suggested are absolutely manky. It's for an 18 year old not an 80 year old... A geography teacher wouldn't drive some of them.

I had a 2007 Toyota Auris Mk1 1.4D-4D as my first car. Very good car and reasonable to insure. Very comfortable and never gave me a days trouble and it had 370,000km on it when I sold it.

A Leaf or Zoe will probably out accelerate around 70% of cars currently on the road in Ireland.... Tell the 18yo that and it might change their tune.....

Will also cost feck all to run over a year compared to any petrol or diesel car.... (€120 tax and about €300-€400 a year in electricity)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,644 ✭✭✭✭punisher5112

Aygo or equivalent in pug and Citroen.... Cheap insurance....

If insurance wasn't an issue... Audi TT

I don't think engine size matters much anymore for insurance purposes since the rise in the popularity of turbocharged engines. A 1.0L engine could be producing anything from 60bhp to 130bhp.

A Fiesta or Polo are usually solid bets, I'd try and find something from 2010-2013 and with one of the 80bhp engine variants. I really wouldn't touch diesel either, stick to petrol.

    0-60mph time of Leaf - 11.1s
    0-60mph time of Zoe - 11s

By no means fast, my old diesel octavia can out accelerate either of them by a good margin. Don't assume that because they are electric and they deliver instant torque that they accelerate quicker than most other cars.

Fair enough, I’ve only ever driven 1 electric car and it’s not exactly slow, but still, for any young person starting driving nowadays, it’d be mad not to consider an EV..
So much smoother and easier to drive, and so much cheaper to run....

The Leaf/Zoe will still outperform most other cars in their class with an ICE engine...

AHH will ya stop it they're horrible especially the leaf. I said it to my youngest lad he said he'd sooner get the bike back out of the shed..

I'm young and love EVs but I would also stay away from those first gen Leafs and Zoes. Young people definitely are more interested in EVs now and will buy them (once they can afford them) but they have to be more capable than those first generation models. The new e-208 and ID.3 are cars I can definitely see young people buying used in good numbers within a few years.

buying the car , he's probably gonna be paying for tax, insurance and fuel as well ..
There is an i-mev on done deal ,suddenly the Zoe is starting to look good. ..

They have no credibility, retired public servants and husbands who don't want their wives travelling too far buy Leaf/Zoe. You are trying to peddle Cliff Richard to Millenials

OP did say car for her daughter

at least a couple of posters projecting a young male boy racer in the answers and even saying "he"

are the electric cars mentioned really in budget? e.g. that Zoe on carzone still has a battery lease on it -> 11,000 euro incl battery

for a girl mini one 1.2 petrol maybe? or the older 1.4 l

Yeah nice looking car but I think the 4 previous owners for a 7 year old car would put me off.

Be careful with the Minis. I do really like them and they are a fun car to drive. But they do go wrong a good bit and are a pain to work on.

Those Fiats are more of an accessory that a car for everyday. Very small and cheap interior, and can't imagine very safe at speed if involved in a crash.
