At this point it seems like she's stealing a living.
How is there a seemingly full time role available to her to discuss what has changed on the iPhone 12 that wasn't in the iPhone 11, or what features the new Samsung has.

Any "technology" story and she's wheeled out to comment on across multiple shows on the station, all too often it seems basic stuff that anybody could Google to find out.

I dunno, just baffled about her! Nothing personal, seems a nice person etc.

As well as being a technology correspondent or technology reporter on various shows, Jess Kelly presents her own show called Tech Talk and works online too on technology news. She was previously a researcher or producer on various shows. Got this from Linkedin!

I think she's awful. A lot of the time is spent humming and hawing when asked a simple question about something.

Anyone with a tech background will tell you she waffles her way from one story to another! Everything she discusses is easily found on Google, or she'll come back to you about that (another google search! off air of course). She is the perfect example or somebody with a hard neck and powerful friends that can open the right doors!

Not sure what Google point is all about...so what if info is also available there...that's what it's for....and these powerful friends??...she hasn't been appointed as Governer of the Central Bank....and who might these Masters on the Universe be ...I'm all ears....or are you just making stuff up for some obscure reason..

I don't think you can win when you call yourself a Tech Expert, as given the nature of IT people they will always pick holes in any opinion that you have. I find her to be bright, humble, genuine and about the only person on Newstalk who doesn't feel the need to ram their opinions about Donald Trump/Boris Johnson/BREXIT down your throat at every opportunity. And to be fair, it's impossible to be a tech expert on mobile phones / tablets / phablets / laptops / TVs - there's just to many different types of devices and they change too fast. But she gives it her best effort to try to answer the questions that are put to her.

Honestly if you've dealt with anyone in tech/IT this is a response you will hear on a fairly regular basis. It's a weird thing to have a go at her about.

I think she's been a researcher and a producer within the station as someone pointed out above. Also not sure what someone means by having powerful friends, she's said numerous time she started in Newstalk as an intern and worked across various positions within the company. Such a bizarre thing to be upset about.

And Newstalk also notoriously pay terribly

What do you want some PhD graduate who could be making money ACTUALLY developing tech

I think she is cute too

She does a really good job of summarising and simplifying the latest technology news for a non-tech savvy audience. Not sure what kind of bleeding-edge insight you expect to find on a national radio station of all places.

I dunno really, like i said she seems a nice person, and i haven't said anything about connections, she just seems such an obvious spoofer.

Sure we all Google things but she seems to offer no real insight to anything. People texting in questions for her would have their own answer answered in minutes if they'd spent that same amount of time typing their query into Google rather than to newstalk.

Strange how a poster above lambasted other presenters for offering their analysis of current affairs.... On a station called Newstalk :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,202 ✭✭✭✭Sleeper12

They promote her as a technology expert yet her knowledge is extremely limited. She is unable to answer some very basic questions in the studio about basic stuff. An example in the last week was a question about E Sim. She didn't actually know what it was. She stabbed a guess at it & then she she'd look it up & post the answer on the Facebook page.

Technology reporter maybe but no expert imo

Does she also voice the Dunnes Stores annoying radio ads on Newstalk? Sounds like her anyway

I seen a youtube clip of her on nt when they got her on to talk about 5g after 3 launched it, sounded like she hadn't a breeze what to say. She just kept reiterating what the spokesperson from 3 had said. Any time I've heard her segments she doesn't go into much detail. Maybe it's a case of them thinking they will lose listeners if they go too technical but I prefer an honest opinion on something instead of a blurb on it.

Had the pleasure of listening to her at a work conference last year. Spent the hour talking about how much discrimination she has endured in the male dominated Tech world. It was pathetic and I had to walk out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 695 ✭✭✭lostcat

I don't have an issue with her inserts on PK or otherwise, this is high level 'whats the best phone' stuff, and the people who ask this question just want to know which phone has the handiest 'fool proof' camera and thats fair enough.

However, I don't quite understand the purpose of 'techtalk' or that other podcasts she presents, these are only puff pieces for whomever happens to be on and don't stand up well detail wise against the likes of 'futureproof'. Not her fault but Newstalks for approving the content.

I would welcome a show around tech which asks and teases out the serious questions about where we are going with big data, what Alexa is recording, what google are doing with urban design, what educatoon will look like in 10 years, etc....would probably need a more abrasive or technical host than JK however.

I had never paid any particular attention to her so I gave the podcast a listen. It's nothing special and some of the questions had me wondering why the listeners couldn't look up the answers themselves. She didn't seem all that well prepared either and it was a bit vague and waffly. Without any great trouble, I found a website that had a comprehensive list of modern smartphones with FM radios in them. And If I had a kid going to college, I'd find out from them what the laptop requirements (and operating system!) were before spending a cent. Is a Chromebook really suitable for all 3rd level coursework?

And as a personal irk, I wish people would stop using the word headphones when in fact they're talking about earphones or earbuds.

To be honest tech experts on the radio is unintended comedy.

I cringe every time I am unfortunate enough to hear Tech Tuesday on Matt Cooper.

The absolutely ridiculous, irrelevant, innovation for the sake of innovation tat your man is pimping always reminds me of Ted Crilly's pal who was obsessed with buying flash in the pan nonsense technology like the in coffin fax machine, remote control wheelchair and fake arms.

That's the bit that always gets me too. I can't understand how somebody who can send a text into a radio show to ask can't type the exact same thing into google.

Jess suggested this evening getting a smart watch that you can send texts from.

And use to make payments in store.

If only there was some easier way of doing these than using a bleedin watch. I dunno, like a phone.

    Or cash.

If I saw somebody trying to and inevitably failing after four attempts to make a payment using a watch I'd probably launch them over the counter. Tap and Go tards are bad enough but Google/ Apple Pay gimps are the last straw.

From listening to Jess Kelly over the years I came to the conclusion long ago that she is easily bought over through free products and her goal is to keep these suppliers happy by rarely posting realistic or honest reviews / recommendations. Hence the bizarre recommendation you heard.

Her life seems to revolve around getting free stuff, from flights to phones and hotels. Basically a blogger looking for free stuff who happens to have a radio show outlet

Yeah but I guess that's the demographic that they are looking to help. I mean Conor Pope doesn't be taking calls from Michael O'Leary on how to run an airline, he gets calls from punters who missed their flight because they had the flu.

Completely stealing a living at this stage on Newstalk. I don’t think I’ve ever heard her correctly answer a listeners question. It’s frustrating as hell to listen to her waffling on giving garbage advice and simply wrong information so often 🀦ðŸ»*♂️

I suspect the people giving out about her are not her target market. She's quite good at targeting non tech savvy people, because obviously techies are not going to go to the Pat Kenny show for tech advice. I find her quite amiable, her advice tends to be straightforward, don't get the hate at all...

I think her modus operandi is basically just keep talking, regardless to whether she has a clue what she’s talking about or what she’s saying.

A listener asked today was there a place that you could send old phones to recycle the precious metals. Her answer was to factory reset the phone and donate it to a charity where they can reuse it. She also suggested trying to sell the phone. She did not listen to the question and assumed that all discarded phones can be reused

I like her and her voice on the radio. You can describe her as a tech reviewer but definitely not a tech expert.

I agree, although I'm a techie and I find her segments grand when I stumble upon them, I'll leave them on. She's certainly a lot better than many of radio's other tech 'experts' who pretty much recycle PR provided to them by the various companies, it's basically an advertisement.

She also doesn't seem to do that thing that most tech journalists do, people ask for a phone recommendation and she doesn't always go for the Samsung Pro Max 5G Elite Plus 2tb model that costs €1,000+. She's more realistic.

shes nice to listen to and shes nice to look at.

shes fine when reviewing / describing standard run of the mill high street tech.... but she is clueless about anything left field.

for years when she was asked about mid / low price range phones for family members etc she would always just default to mid range samsungs / Huawei etc with no clue of any of the emerging chinese brands such as one + or xiaomi, which would have been tangibly better options at the price range being asked about.

Again, this goes back to the point of knowing your target audience. Until quite recently, getting a Chinese phone involved importing from a number of different sites, possibly having to pay import duties, picking from a range of sellers with various (and slight) differences/etc.

The people texting newstalk want to walk into carphone warehouse and buy a phone.

That essentially is the art of radio.

There are very few people with expertise in any field who manage to get their message across to the great unwashed.

Take a listen to the Technology on the Pat Kenny Show from 26th January, go to 7min 52 seconds where a listener asks (albeit a daft question) about data being in Excel 97 and new computer having Excel 2010, and listen to the response she gives regarding Google Drive and the version of Excel that's in Google Drive

Now granted, if she doesn't get a look at these questions in advance and has to fire an answer out on the fly then it's understandable that it can be difficult to be correct all of the time.
