Shelled by the former Sky train...

Tough little climb to come. Dan looking good, Froome NOT!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,258 ✭✭✭Boscoirl

They probably saw at the Tour/Giro if they lose the Leader, they can go hunt stages

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,123 ✭✭✭mr spuckler

Funny approach from Dan Martin there on the climb, surged to the front and then a couple of mins later was in the middle of the group!

Now he looks like he's well back in the group on this descent, I'm reminded of his descending in the Tour and hoping it won't be more of the same.

I think Carapaz is their leader (numbers aside)

Was Froome pulling at all or working for the team, I was watching the Giro.

I don't think Froome will finish the Vuelta and I can't see him continuing with his career if he can't rediscover his old form. A shame for him, but the Procyclingstats, since his return from lockdown, indicate that his form has only declined wih each race let alone improved.

You get a real sense of the speeds with the directly overhead shots there

He mightn't even finish today looking at his descending!

No. Wasn't near the front and as they went up the penultimate climb, he just drifted out the back as the pace went up for the first time really

Dan's in a great position here and looks like he fancies it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,258 ✭✭✭Boscoirl

Dan moving back to the front of the group

Was that Vlasov out the back there?

Never realised Dan was so small, tiny compared to the guys around him, especially Carthy behind him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,123 ✭✭✭mr spuckler

This is amazing stuff for day 1 of a GT :D

edit: big Tom was saying he was aiming for the podium, that's a bad start for him.

    edit 2: go on Dan!

    Come on Dan.

GC contenders already putting down a marker.

    Go on Danny Boy!

    Kuss's face shows no pain.

Looks like he's cycling up to the shop to get milk

Nice move by Roglic but still well impressed by Dan today. Great to see him in that kind of form again.

    great stuff

Thats the best I've seen Dan in maybe 2 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,518 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

    Perfect timing from Roglic.

Great result and performance for Dan. So good to see him in good form again :)

3rd for Dan, not bad, looks like he has some good from with him for the Vuelta, hopefully he'll stay at the sharp end of the race for the duration.

Great stage. Good sign for Dan for the rest of the race too.

That was a cracking start to the Vuelta, great ride out of Dan.

Jesus that was tremendous. The big guns came out with their dicks swinging. We have seen the contenders in that bunch. There was absolutely no easing your way into the race.

A good day for Slovenia ;)

Struggling to think of the last time we saw a GC day like that in a tour on day one outside of a time trial

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,123 ✭✭✭mr spuckler

And another hilly day to come tomorrow with a Cat 1 near the end :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,010 ✭✭✭velo.2010

Does Roglic dare to hold the jersey all the way to Madrid? It would be some way to exorcise those Tour de France demons if he managed to do it.

Friday until Sam has a go?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,047 ✭✭✭Itziger

I hadn't looked at the profile at all and when I turned it on I was wondering if Sam had a a chance today :)

    Maybe not.

Second the sentiments here. Great to see Dan in that form. They dropped a fair few big hitters today.

Hard to even remember a non prologue or sprint day 1. 2008 was a rare exception, I'll never forget Valverde's ridiculous sprint to win that day. Very fitting opening to one of the daftest yet entertaining Tours in recent times.

Froome lost 11:12 in the end. Pinot was 9:56 down.

Sam Bennett in the biggest group at just over 15 minutes

Michael Woods listed by some as a podium challenger. He was 3 minutes behind the Sam group. Dani Martinez lost 4:30. Wout Poels 1:51

First day and loads of lads who thought they would be on the podium are done for GC

Why did I think this started on Thursday?? Completely missed it.

Woods had an incident with some road furniture and due to how stretched the race was he had to wait for a new bike

Dan Martin was right up there in the Fleche-Wallonne so he must have been feeling good after the tour. I reckon he started to take it easy in the last week or so of the Tour.

Tune in to ITV4 at 7pm for their highlights package of LAVuelta

BTW Froome has signed a several million pound deal with Israel Start Up Nation ...no way is he retiring

I thought Froome would have some form for the Vuelta, seems I was wrong, do you think he just doesn't give a toss about Sky at this point, as its either that or he doesn't seem to be recovering from his horror crash, and might never be the same rider again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,256 ✭✭✭MPFGLB

Dan Martin did not do the Worlds or the Irish Championships etc in order to be ready for La Vuelta

Has a good shot of a podium as the parcours really suits him

I thnik Froome will improve as the race goes on

He has had no racing in 1.5 years almost

And he came back from such a terrible crash

He will get alot better ...He has the determination and strength of character

He didn’t do those races because of LBL and Flèche Wallonne to be fair
