Yeah I kind of feel this is the key. Irish people have a bizarre approach to money saving, people buying PHEVs and running them like pure petrol cars to save road tax

So the appearance of something being cheaper is almost more important than the actual savings. Especially since most Irish drivers seem to think of the NCT as just another tax rather than a road worthiness check

In this way it's a lot like the toll discount. I think for many EV drivers the discount probably saves only around €50 per year, but the attraction of saving money on tolls is much greater than the actual value

At least the motor tax and toll savings are immediately relisable. I'm finding it more difficult to see how an even free Nct, providing a whopping €55 (yes even after vat reversal) saving after 4 year and every 2 years thereafter, would cause someone to rush out and lash out €50k on an EV.

Seems to me that purchasing an EV encourage some people to be irrationally in need of making savings, however small, from their decision. Or maybe they simply like rubbing ICE drivers nose in it. Ah no surely they couldn't be that pithy.

The cost of buying, owning and running a car is not just the headline purchase price. New cars cost a lot but thats true for EV and ICE alike.

It is the following, for as long as you own and run it.

Depreciation - the older and cheaper the car the lower this will be. EVs generally doing well here as far as new cars go, but older cars will be less for sure.

Financing costs if applicable - higher as the value goes up

Insurance - in the lap of the gods what different cars cost here

Tax - lowest on EVs, not huge saving but a bit

Fuel - lowest on EVs, could be significant.

Repairs and maintenance, including NCT and pre nct work - lowest on EVs, could be significant savings over ICE cars

Tolls - lowest on EVs, not much but a bit

Should a 4WD have a reduced price NCT as well, as they don't use the rollers?
