    Hi all

I'm currently working off a coffee table and the hunching over it is killing my back

Can anyone recommend a good computer table for a small flat that is easy to assemble (and hopefully cheap!)

Hmm I had thought about it, pricey enough and I'm useless at manual labour

    Thanks but poor availability :(

I got one from movement events, there were a few of these events companies turning their hand at home office desks in lockdown 1.

I know a couple of people using these. Ok it wont look the prettiest but it's cheap and easily foldable.

2 people I work with got a desk from this crowd:
    https://www.flyingelephant.ie/shop

One got the sit stand desk, the other the height adjustable one, and both are very happy with them.

I got this desk two weeks ago. Delivered quickly, a pleasure to put together and very sturdy.

A colleague has this from Amazon. It is a sit stand desk and while big enough for a keyboard + laptop + second screen really does not take much space. It is quite sturdy even at tallest setting

Currently listed as out of stock but comes back quite regularly

What are you sitting on? Getting something better than a coffee table is a good idea but chairs are important too. Many people have learned that their kitchen chairs aren't helping their backs either.

This is what I've been doing, though with a better set-up than the OP (I have a proper desk and chair). I connect my laptop to a monitor using a HDMI cable and use a wireless keyboard and mouse.

    Have you asked your employer?

You shouldn't be expected to provide office furniture, along with office space and office heating for your employer.

He's not. I'm sure he has a desk and heating at the office provided by his employer and will have again once the pandemic is over.

You suggesting the employer had to provide two sets of furniture? Why should they to do that? Cost of business is already high enough in Ireland, not that you would know - or care - about that.

I got one of these. You can't sit in underneath the table due to the legs being in the way.

He’s providing them with office space, light and heat and probably stationery. As an employee he is neither obliged or contracted to do either. But he is being flexible and helpful... how about his employer get to thinking bout being professional and helpful...

They could simply procure one of these...

    https://www.ikea.com/ie/en/p/goliat-computer-table-white-40111322/

And get it bought and couriered to him for around 85-90 euros... not much to ask ..

I already asked around, they'll provide a monitor that's about it

Because it is the responsibility of the employer to provide a safe place to work. You can't do office work safely without a desk and a chair and heating, particularly in the coming months. This is the employer's cost to bear.

I know of two tech companies that have given their staff allowances of €300 and €1000 each to fit out their home office. I know of one bank that is allowing staff to expense the cost of a desk and a chair.

This is the employer's problem to solve, and the least they can do is to make sure their employee is not out of pocket for the privilege of working.

But if employers want to get thick, let's start talking about the cost of renting a room from each employee.

This is the desk I use for my personal PC at home:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00RVE2DNA

It's smaller, but a good height and reasonably sturdy, and plenty of room for a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. I got a two-tier monitor stand to provide a little extra storage space as well.

Can't the employer just tell the employee(s) to return to the office full time if they aren't happy with the arrangements?

Anything stopping them doing that ?

I've heard organisations planning for partial return to the office on a 30% capacity or a 50% capacity. The 'if possible' bit of the work-from-home seems to be often forgotten, and many employees have been obliged to provide work space, and in many cases furniture and facilities to their employers, without any question of whether this is possible or feasible.

Surely if it wasnt possible or feasible to WFH, the employee would address the issues with their employer?

Many have, and been told that the office is closed for now, so.....

I use this - the Snug
Assembles in less than a minute. Very easy to take down.

    https://ministryofmakers.ie/product/snug/

    They have bigger versions too.
