Hi all. I’ve a budget of €8500 max and was set on trying to get a 2014 Passat, 1.6 Diesel. Someone suggested trying Skoda also. I haven’t driven either models but am wondering on peoples opinions on which are better. The Superbs look nice and there’s a few on DoneDeal for my budget. There aren’t as many Passats in the same range. Any help or advice appreciated. Thanks

Passat will be old shape, which is a development of the 2005 model.
Octavia will be newer in terms of tech but the Passat would still be nicer finished inside
Jetta would be worth a shot IMO. They’re usually 2.0 110PS and escaped the dieselgate drama (As did the mk3 Octavia)

When you mention the Jetta would be 110PS, is that the same as 110bhp? Also, not sure what the dieselgate drama is??

I had a 2017 Jetta 2.0 150PS GT and it was a brilliant car to drive. No issues with dieselgate on that one either. I had a Passat prior to it and I have to say the Jetta was a much better driving car. There is f-all difference in the boot space between both either.

Same as this but in white:

Yes 110PS is roughly 110bhp. Diesel gate was the VW emissions scandal where they engineered the cars to do well in emissions testing but not in real driving. There was a recall where updated hardware/software was fitted which had bad side effects for reliability and performance.

Try to go for at least a 2015 Passat if going for one.
    Lovely car to drive.

Not sure if the budget would cover a half decent one

Not gonna find one without huge mileage for the 8500 budget, if at all.

    Low mileage and looks clean.

Might get that close to budget, private sale by the looks of it.

That looks like a good buy. Doubt they’d drop to €8500 though!

I would advise to look for a 2.0 one over the 1.6, I know of many people that went for the 1.6 and were regretting not getting the 2.0.

I assume the Mondeo wouldn’t be in the same league as a Passat or Superb?

That 2015 Passat seems suspiciously cheap to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,481 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Get one with a proper sized engine.

Octavia is smaller to the Passat so you need to compare the Passat v the Superb

I can only speak of the mk5 mondeo.
It would be much more comfortable than the Passat.

Previous generation Mondeo is nasty inside by comparison.
OP might squeeze a newer model into the budget.

Ok people are suggesting a 2.0 litre diesel now, rather than 1.6. At the moment I have a 2.0l 2010 Avensis and I don’t think it’s very economical, I’d be getting the 1.6 version purely for economy. Or am I wrong on this and have things changed?

1.6 stuff tends to be underpowered, Avensiss are normally pretty good for economy so maybe yours isn’t 100%.

Small engine in a big car doesn't equate to more economical. The small engine has to work harder to move the big car so uses more fuel.

Depends where you are looking. The boot volume for Octavia's is than a match for the Passat (saloon or Estate). Overall yes, but maybe not in the areas that are important.

Probably not but selling 9k+ cars privately isn't easy, so it's worth a try. I'd be astonished if they turned down 9k, they'd be mental really.

To be fair, it’s already well priced compared to what’s out there. Of course nobody wants to pay full price for anything but even at full price given the mileage and the fact that there’s no VRT and NOX to pay, it’s a good deal and it will sell.

Have been told several times to avoid that VAG 1.6 unit, chews injectors apparently.

I think the newer MQB platformed cars are way better in that regard?

Mondeo is a nicer drive than either and if you go above the base model, generally will have better specification.

    I had a 2.0 B8 (2015) Passat and driving at 115kph on a dublin trip could give me 64mpg.

16 inch tint visor with VW logo, limo tints all round. She's junior management drug dealer spec. Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

Notable mention to the fancy font “Volkswagen Passat” sticker on the bottom of the windscreen, and the vertically stacked windscreen discs.

I have a 2010 2.0 diesel but don’t find it very economical. Was set on a 1.6 Diesel Passat for economy purposes. I drive average 500km a week. 2 kids also. If a 2.0 Passat is as economical as a 1.6, I’d definitely get one. Also open to an Octavia or Superb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

Have you worked out how long it will take you to save back the cost to change?

If you increased from 40mpg to 50mpg which would be colossal IMO, a 25% improvement in economy, doing 500kms a week you'd be saving €9.15 a week or €475 a year.

If you spend a few grand changing car, you'd actually be losing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43 Mickotipp

Ya I get ya. I need to change the car anyway. Just to decide whether to get a 1.6 or 2.0 is all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,481 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

If your not finding a 2.0d Avensis economical then either your expectations are too high or it is not running right.

A diesel Avensis would be one of the most economical cars around. Changing the car to be more economical will not end well.

500km a week is not big mileage. Are you doing long/short trips? you dont have budget for electric cars but that is the only car that will reduce your fuel expenditure

Have been told several times to avoid that VAG 1.6 unit, chews injectors apparently.

    Hi there

I had that problem last year with my 161 seat leon - I had to get injectors changed - lad who fixed it and specialised in them said it was a common problem with that 1.6tdi unit and that tolerances were too tight (even if its a low probability and I was unlucky).

If I was buying a VAG again I would try to avoid but the 1.6 units are a lot cheaper than the same car equivalent in 2.0.

Looked at this today. Seems ok. Nice and clean on inside. Timing belt done. €7800 bottom price.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/view/26173931
Looking at this one then tomorrow. Would probably get it for around €8k. Don’t think the interior is as nice. Higher mileage too even though it’s a year newer.

Drove a Superb too today. They’re massive...too big so I’ve those crossed off my list!

What’s the very most you’d spend? You’re close to current model Passat with what you’d be spending there.
Close, as in a few grand away, money well spent IMO.

The Superb and Passat from 2014 are the same length and width.

The Superb just uses the length better and is much bigger in the cabin especially rear legroom.

If I were you I'd go for the best condition car and wouldn't be hung up on which model.

I had a seat leon 1.6 diesel for a day a while ago. At 80kmph the dash said it was doing 70mpg.
On the motorway at 125kmph it said 48mpg.
My 2l A4 is doing 60mpg at 125kmph on the motorway.

Just curious, is 2.0 avensis more economical than 1.5 dci fluence
