The Carbon tax has been set in train. It will rise on an annual basis up to 2030, at which point it will be a serious bill.

There is no new decision to be made on this.

It's going to be a bit like the frog in the boiling water.

I'm hoping they bang a big tax on car, truck and van tyres. I think if tyres were dearer it would slow some down. A lot of speeding on our roads.local roads in particular are pretty bad with it. Speeding equals many things, but you will soon ate the tyres of a yoke with it too.

I'm hoping they give a tax holiday for one year to the self employed because of Covid disruption.

A tax holiday for us all would be nice. Us paye workers who can't loose our jobs were disrupted too..

Not a chance that will slow people down. Compare to a box of fags that has not stopped many people from smoking. I live on small country road, the road had a bad surface on it upto a few years ago until it got a good resurfacing. To see the difference in the traffic speed after was crazy. Narrow roads with cars hitting 100km at times. Only way to slow traffic is poor road surfaces/speed ramps or else speed cameras unfortunately.

Yes, delay preliminary tax payment until 2021 would be a good idea

That would drive the masses even further into the embrace of the cheapest chinese tyres they could find and be counter productive towards safety.

I'm no brand snob either some of them are actually pretty decent but quite a few of them are cruel bad.

Yep, more Carbon tax nonsense thanx to the Green clowns - and I guarantee you not one extra penny will be spent on anything that might actually improve or protect natural heritage in this country:mad:

It’s just a disproportionate punishment on rural people because we have no alternatives.

The greens should be something rural people are happy to support. Not just a party for the D4 elitist to vote for to ease their conscience 🙄

The Carbon tax is also anti-poor people - between that and the massive jump in the PSO levy this winter, energy poverty is going to become an ever bigger problem in this country:(

At least a tyre tax would be more user pays as opposed to road tax and insurance premiums were someone pays the same for both as someone else who maybe doing multiples more mileage annually.

Nothing ever works when it ain't even tried

Like many farmers I've an old diesal saloon car. Hope they dont increase the road tax on her. Cannt really see myself changing over to an electric any time soon. For starters, how do you tow a trailer full of sheep behind a electric car ? Mart is 60kms away and factory 120kms . Be a while before an affordable electric car with a strong towing capacity, along with a battery that a trailer wont drain becomes available.

I have a van, to tow the trailer and handy for picking stuff up. So I looked into electric models and besides the eye watering price, there was two battery choices. The first was one battery with a fairly useless range. But there was a second model with two batteries, only the load capacity and presumably the towing capacity was reduced to nearly half due to the extra battery weight. Some ****ing point to that

I have never believed electric vehicles given current (pardon the pun) technology are the answer.

Electric vehicles will probably get there in the end, but their years and years away from them making sense for a small farmer.

I think they are a long ways off yet for something like a van with a hitch. Small electric cars in cities seems to be taking off alright, but of course they have plenty of charge points and don't have to pull trailers around the place.

Can't see much for farmers in this budget. We've have promises of the carbon tax money being "ring fenced" for environmental schemes. I'll believe it when I see it unfortunately.

I think car tax going up €50 on older cars. Some have the same engines as the later 07 ? cars with lower tax. We'll have to appeal to the European court. The most carbon friendly car is the one you already have, not the brand new one.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

How can they lable the flat rate vat increase as a positive for farming? If the rate increases it doesnt mean the factories are going to pay any more for sheep or cattle?

The flat rate vat refund amount is based on a rolling formula, it can go up as well as down, the government doesn't decide the amount.
As for who benefits, it's better to have it anyway

Looks like GLAS, BDGP, BEEP, ANC and TAMS are continuing until a new CAP is agreed.
