Any idea what a grid challenge Test is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20 elanicap1

I will be doing the aptitude test for this, but have never done a grid challenge aptitude test before.

I was just going to ask the same thing. Tried doing an internet search on it and nothing much came up...

Have just completed this test and I am annoyed I can tell you. The verbal reasoning section was the only part of this test that was relevant to this job. I can only assume the rest was for the army ranger competition.

I'm the same, can't seem to find exactly what it is, 12 minutes to complete, I don't want to start it if I don't have a clue what I'm doing.

There are tutorials for each section first

Where have everyone applied for? I wonder are there many positions. Good luck all.

I just did it there, what a complete joke. How the grid challenge will have any relevance to the job is beyond me.

I posted what I wrote in the rating/opinion bit at the end where they ask you for a comment, for what its worth.

Think of how many verbal ones you could have answered in that time.

Revenue are normally quite quick to turnaround assessment results, about 7-10 days after the test deadline. Those that are unsuccessful are usual informed first with a day or two to allow for reviews or appeals.

If I remember correctly, they also tend to call some candidates to interview in the same email as the results.

    Hope this helps.

That helps greatly! Thank you very much. Need a little something to be hopeful for.

    Good luck

It's been a challenging time alright but we have made it this far! 😉
I'm a little restless and would like a career so probably pinned too much on this campaign but if nothing else, it's been a nice distraction.
This thread is a little quiet though.

    Best wishes to you.

The role of a service officer isn't a bad job to have but if by career you mean your aiming for promotion opportunities down the line, you will probably need to move to the Clerical Officer grade at some point.

A service officers can apply for promotion to the Executive Officer grade after two years but unless you have administrative work experience elsewhere, it can be difficult to bridge the gap.

Could the PAYE phone lines be avoided going that route.

You are a fountain of knowledge Mike, thank you I appreciate it.

I would be bringing a modest amount of prior admin experience with me. Even in my current job in child care I seem to end up with the administration and any IT related work. I really enjoy it.

    Thanks again, very interesting.

Do you mean going from Service Officer direct to EO?

Well you could be managing staff on the helplines but you wouldn't be on the phone as much. I think the only way to avoid the helplines although would be through a specialist panel like the EO Competition in Tax Audit and Compliance.

Your not to bad so, the service officer roles are broad and can vary but generally you won't get as much administrative work as you would in the Clerical Officer grade.

Got an email there telling me I didn't get through to the next stage. Fairly disappointed as I have actually worked in Revenue before. Still can't believe those tests were so hard.

Really disappointed too. I suppose the money isn't great anyway.

Got same email and I’m disappointing yes but if I would have to engage in gun fights as the aptitude test would have you believe then I can live with it

I too have worked in revenue twice and the second time my reports went to the EU commission, but sure that’s just in reality.

    442.99 euro a week ?
Is that for a 35 hour week ? That would be 12.65 an hour . You wouldn’t want to be driving very far or paying for parking ?

It can often be a bit of whatever is needed, but core duties would usually be:
Staffing the reception & dealing with visitors.
Looking after building security, including being a keyholder. This can mean you have very little flexibility with your hours as you have to open up/lock up.
Looking after the post - internal, external, couriered etc
Setting up meeting rooms, and general furniture moving.

Thank you. So is there very little by way of administrative work involved?

Yes, the admin work would usually fall to COs and EOs

There may be some in so far as ordering stationary, supplies or maintaining certain records but strictly speaking its not an administrative role/grade.

Unfortunately this goes back to my post to another user yesterday, unless you have prior administrative experience, at some point you would need to move to a Clerical Officer role to gain the experience needed to advance within the civil service.

Were you called to the interview stage?

I was yes. I've been applying for loads of jobs and tbh I didn't realise this wasn't a clerical role. So I'm feeling a bit stupid!!!

This is so frustrating, I put so much effort into those aptitude tests and would really like this job, have experience in similar roles but was eliminated by a stupid aptitude test.

I honestly can't see the connection between that aptitude test and the position involved. It's ridiculous to be honest.

I think most people would assume its administrative and its not clearly stated otherwise so I wouldn't be feeling stupid.

It depends on your personal circumstances and qualifications, I know one of the negative side of the service officer role is that they aren't automatically entitled to flexi-time and so your hours may be fixed. If thats not an issue for you and your not currently working, its wouldn't be a bad job for the moment.

The next permanent Clerical Officer campaign for the Civil Service is due in early to mid 2021.

It’s a faux test all they want to do is cull the numbers.
