    Hi
Did a medical the other day for a government job and all was well but blood pressure was up a bit, could be white coat syndrome according to the doctor but will the position be withdrawn based on high blood pressure.

I have no idea what you are talking about. And I am not sure here is the place to ask about medical conditions or the implications of them.

No way to know without details of the job and the medical requirements. I’d imagine there’s a huge range of requirements across all possible government jobs. But FWIW, there are many many people in government jobs with high blood pressure.

    A govt job in Ireland?

I wasn't aware that medicals were a thing for Irish civil servants.

An a retired public servant, the medical is to assess risk factors which taken together assess the likelihood of absence due to sick leave. An otherwise fit person with a once-off raised BP should not preclude employment. Often the medical in a generally healthy person served the purpose to prompt a visit to the GP, dentist etc to get single issues remedied. I wouldn't really be overly worried.

I meant i couldn't understand the question. It seemed unclearly worded.

I have since spoken to five different civil servants, none of them had a medical for their job. (The most they had was an opportunity to state if they had any medical condition.)

    Is it a new thing?

    Hi all,

Just reading this out of interest...I had a medical for a job the other day she said my blood pressure was too high (155) ideally they want it round (120)...so I have to go next week to my GP to get a second reading ..is there anyway I can get it down (apart from a prescription)?

Exercise can reduce blood pressure as can cutting out added salt or salty foods such as crisps, but if that doesn't do it quickly enough then medical advice is the way to go.

No caffeine or alcohol the day before, relax, deep breading exercises. Exercise is definitely a good life choice going forward.
