We all know a few, United Ireland, Still hate the Brits etc etc, Paste the following below to your phone and then ask the ''Brutal Question''...... Name the 6 Counties of Northern Ireland ?
    Derry/Londonderry
    Tyrone
    Antrim
    Down
    Armagh
    Fermanagh

I asked 6, The reactions were hilarious, Only 1 could name all 6, 3 could name 3 and 2 could name 2. 1 knew 1 ! ! They have never bothered me since. Best reaction is to ask them when they are surrounded by ''Mates'' ! !

we all have that friend who says they hate the English, has the wolftones playing and all that but still supports the likes of Man Utd etc and takes trips over to the bad lands for piss ups etc. Honest to god said friend thought Sligo was part of the North

Those type of people need to tone it down in some instances, its good to feel passionate about your country but this is real life and not a movie like Michael Collins or The Wind that shakes the barley etc.

Us in the south no nothing of the hardship people from the North suffer/suffered through the years (on both sides of the community). Id love to see this brave lads on the barstool go up to there and start mouthing off

“Barstool” seems to be used on this forum a lot to describe anyone who supports Irish unity, doesn’t have a strong farmer/D4 disdain for the poor or who doesn’t engage in cloying postcolonial cringe masked as political ‘maturity’.

To be honest OP your mates just sound like thick idiots who had adopted a costume, you get them in all aspects of life. They don’t represent or define everyone with a Republican analysis.

Not at all. It's the same as when "Armchair" gets used. The difference is in the setting. By using barstool, they are suggesting one spends time talking about or engaging in the subject, primarily at the pub around other people, instead of actually going forth and doing something.

It's mainly used by people who follow Irish football clubs, against those who follow football clubs from other regions. As it's generally watched in a pub and their level of support is considered trivial, due to less regular attendance at matches.

You just need to look at the number of people from the South who went up North and took up a gun during the Troubles. There were very few when you consider we had ca. 3.5 million people back then.

My Dad was an advocate of Irish unity, but he wanted a peaceful transition. He worked for a few years as a sales rep in NI at the height of the Troubles and he saw the worst of what went on. It left an impression on him.

I can remember a few times when refugee families stayed a couple of nights in our house in Dublin during the worst of it, while waiting to be rehoused here. He was prepared to do that, but he wouldn't get involved with anything else, even when asked.

The majority of people did very little. Shouted all sorts of 'Brits Out' shyte, but did feck all to help. Those people still exist, absolute PITA and I do my level best to avoid them.

By the way, I’m not saying these type of people don’t exist. I was active in the Republican Movement for years when I was in Ireland and I remember all manner of people who’d scream and shout about stuff but wouldn’t give you so much as a euro when you were selling the paper or collecting for prisoners.

My only point is that these people aren’t representatives of Republicanism as an ideology as a whole and that on this site, “barstool” gets thrown around all the time (usually by people who’d have absolute conniptions if you called them a ‘West Brit’)

Why would people support an illegal organisation by buying An Phoblacht and the papers of the other splinter groups ? (And dodgy cigarettes etc )

Some of that money was going to Prisoners who attacked the State ! Shot at Gardai, tried to terrorise local businesses for protection rackets , pedalled drugs into housing estates under the guise of vigilantes etc etc

The public opposed the use of violence and they certainly oppose a self appointed group who were not only not accountable to Dáil Éireann (like the 1919-1921 movement) But also simply REFUSED to recognise the authority of our Parliament and Courts and it’s existence - took them a good 30 odd years and a few splits to cop on

Oh absolutely , even the more ardent anti IRA men genuinely got angry and Anti British during the Hunger Strikes - British Embassy in Dublin nearly burned to the ground , that can’t be all IRA armchair warriors , but then, any goodwill went out the window when the IRA continued to bomb civilians in NI and mainland Britain

Some of your pals were sent to jail for punishment beatings on stupid young lads who were dumb enough to be out joy ridding and doing drugs . Of course there were plenty of lads willing to give the “do you know who I am” in the bar toilets of the land -la Robert McCartney case - forgetting that they are suppose to be a secret organisation

Oh sure , you’d see people of all ages, normally opposed to the IRA , in pubs shouting up the Ra etc ... but they ought to be ignored and boycotted

Oh As a Clare man who lived in Pana during the 90's now and again I'd sit with my Corkonian friends for a cure on a Sunday.

Celtic Vs Rangers, I'm more bog ball myself, but the athmosphere in a Cork City bar on a Sunday afternoon watching the game was very tense.

The night before I'd have been dragged to a Charlie and the Bhoys gig in some hotel outside Cork City, absolute mahem outside afterwards.

I eventually found my place and left that phase of socialism and spent most weekends bopping away to deep house music in Sir Henry's and other bar's and club's in Cork City.

    A more relaxed atmosphere :)

The difference is , those called West Brits aren’t West Brits . It used by morons who have a massive difficulty in using words that they do not understand and they have a laughable notion as to what traits make up Irish Nationalism. In their eyes, you make any critical comment about the Republican movement who have no issue with violence (not all Republicans support and justify use of violence ) and with ease dismiss the usual whatabouterys those barstoolers spew ... those people are labelled West Brits

The barstoolers on the other hand , most of them are correctly labelled as such. They wouldn’t dare utter their views in public as most of them are grossly devoid of facts . They also do nothing but talk about it. They wouldn’t and couldn’t do a single thing to promote their political beliefs . Some of them wouldn’t even be trusted to get out an vote . They’d call anyone they oppose a West Brit even if the latter has a superior grasp of the Irish language lol

I couldn’t be arsed rehashing the morality of the IRA campaign at the moment to be honest, and you’ve completely missed the point. If people are politically opposed to them etc then that’s fine and I respect that opinion.

The point being that some people professed to vocally support the Republican movement as part of their image or whatever but would in reality do absolutely nothing, even something trivial, to support it in practical terms i.e they were bullsh*tters.

It’s not a term I usually use myself but there is a section of the population here that engage in vociferous condemnation of the very idea of Irish Republicanism but will then stridently defend organisations such as the Royal Ulster/Irish Constabularies or the ‘security forces’ in general. The type of people who scoffed at the idea that the British state engaged in collusion with Loyalists, dismissing it as a slur and a conspiracy. The same lot will demand we have every commemoration under the sun for people who gallantly joined the British Army while pushing a revisionist angle portraying Republicans as blood thirsty sectarian yokels.

In a similar vein many people go out of their way to have an active and hostile dislike of things like the Irish language or Gaelic games (a scenario known as cultural cringe). Some go so far to say we should be rejoining the Commonwealth and all that b*llocks.

These people always existed in Ireland; lickspittles and establishment or wannabe establishment types only now they’re repackaging their boring unimaginative nonsense as ‘maturity’ and all that craic.

As I said I don’t usually use the term myself, but it describes a very real phenomenon.

I love our heritage and culture, absolutely embrace it.

I don't understand these so called achiever's and people who have a problem with the Irish language and culture and heritage, nor do I want to understand them.

I'll accept they're entitled to their opinion, but that's about it.
I'm not one for killing the goose which laid the golden egg.

But I'll quite happily live in my own bubble of legends, folklore, mythology, culture and fantasy..

Because when our heritage, history and uniqueness is mowed over ...at least I can lie on my death bed and say I lived it and didn't forget who I am and not what the liberals and conservatives want me to think and be...

Fck reality, give me a unicorn and the pot at the end of the rainbow anyday :)

The term West Brit is in the SF handbook. When you are losing an arguement just call the person a West Brit. When pointed out to you that you have a Manchester United top on in your profile picture.... Leave the conversation.

I have been called a West Brit many times. Mostly around the election results and the whole "but we won the election nonsense ". Funnily enough understanding the electoral system we use here, as opposed to FPTP as many SF supporters thought we used here makes me a West Brit .

Also pointing out that you cannot take to the internet in outrage against murders carried out by the British Army on monday but on Tuesday be posting about how a killing of a child in an IRA bomb was justified because of british army killing people.....

Then we have the Cult of Marylou, the fact SF seem to always want to do the opposite of they are doing in the North but claim to be an all Ireland Party.

As for the OP. You cannot expect them to know geography when they don't know that 24% is not a majority, they also don't know how to electoral system works and basically many of them don't even recognise the state...m

This is a picture taken after the funeral of Bobby Storey. They all look the sort of lads you’d see on the door of a rural nightclub. It’s the same when you the SF ard fheis on the TV. Lots of tough looking fat lads in their 50’s gurning away.

“Barstool” is a bit of a stretch. Most of this lot are sitting behind computer screens, in dilapidated bedsits, drinking cheap lager, eating Lidl crisps and looking like this:
