Mercedes C E and S class coupes are nowhere as nice as previous models.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,705 ✭✭✭User1998

As the title suggest, newer is not always better for some.
In my opinion the new 1 series looks bland and awkward looking compared to its predecessors. Any other suggestions?

Comparing an SE with an M-Sport Shadow Edition ..

This is what you should be comparing the older one with, and I think most would agree that the newer one is better:

    Still prefer the previous model.

The front of the new 1 series is unforgivably ugly, there is no redeeming itself with any combination of colour, speciation or photography. There’s a reason why the A class is out performing it 3 fold, lol

Every Skoda Superb has looked more bloated and flugly than its predecessor.

The Merc C class which was only ever "meh" is getting very fat and ugly.

Another less pretty successor car is the new Audi A1. The new A1 just looks like a an over priced Hyundai i20 now I think. The old A1 was a lot more distinctive which is partly what you want when you buy 'premium'

I think there's a bit of a design aesthetic rule developing - the bigger the grill the worse the look.

The new grille on BMW cars in general looks extremely tacky in my opinion.

A little bit of me was very sad when Ford stopped placing the Focus' rear light clusters vertically along the sides of the rear window. Was a nice touch, and helped it stand out I thought. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a lot of hatchbacks these days. Pulsar, Golf, Tipo, i30.. A lot of hatchbacks look like the same car with different shaped light clusters.

I suppose, though, they are all looking for the most aerodynamic body style, and so will invariably all end up with pretty similar results.

Speaking of rear light clusters....IMO the rear of the previous looked more interesting and 'cooler' than the current Leaf, that has can now get lost in the car park. This might divide opinion.

With that generation of e class the w210 didnt lend itself to a coupe version so the clk was essentially a c class coupe with an e class face.

The rear light clusters might be interesting but the old leaf is a hideous beast

The new Focus is would hardly win any beauty contests either with its frumpy look. The predecessor was a lot more sharp and sportier looking....better quality materials too.

The superb out now isn't bad but the one it replaced just looks like it was designed and then they decided to add 2 feet to the back passenger section by stretching the doors.

C class is a pretty good looker these days but always was.

I agree with all the BMW posts here though. Wonder will they do the mad grille on the very important 3 and 5 series in Europe next model, I think they will lose lots of loyal customers if they do. Surely they could make a big ugly grille for China and USA as they seem to like that and a more aesthetic grille for Europe.
I haven't seen a new 4 series in the flesh yet on the roads now that I think of it.

    See below:

The loss of traditional BMW rear wheel drive and with it, the fitment of a big petrol engine (never mind a manual gearbox) if you got the M Performance version, is a far greater crime than the new look...

Watched frank Stephenson, X5 car designer On YouTube previously... he highlighted all the typical Bmw traits that makes their cars stand out as a bmw And they are losing them in the new generation and queried whether it was a good idea

The number plate does somewhat save the new 4 series. But some countries have much smaller plates than in the EU so wonder how they will fare.

Civic is probably one of the best examples.

EP3 was the last decent looking one, and even that's a massive step down from the previous model.

Now this one is subtle enough, but I think the Golf IV was crisp, neat design. The Golf V was flabby and bland in comparison. Greatly improved with the return to neatness since, but gone wayward with the most recent.

3rd and 4th generation Civic was the sweet spot.

This was a big step down for the 323F, for a while Mazda has such great cars, no wonder they sell feck all these days.

I think the 2 gen Panda is a triumph of small car design that has aged very well.

The third looks blobby with no sense if style, despite being practically the same design.

Most BMWs haven't looked right since the Bangle era began really, although the current 3 series is easily the best looking of the modern ones... the 5 series is good looking, too. The 7 series looked nice, until the facelift came along with that enormous grille.

I actually like the last three Civic designs:o!

The E60 was a good step down from the E39 and E34.

BMW's get more bloated looking every year, they used to be a mixture of delicate poise and power. Now they just look like someone took a blowtorch to a jelly mold.
