Formula 2 - The Stars of the Future!!!

Let this be the thread where we can discuss proper racing and all the antics going on with those 'stars of the future'.

I'm my opinion, there's already a few stars or infamous drivers... Some for their outstanding driving, and others for their poor decisions resulting in a ban on recent years!!

Next Race is the Feature at Monza...

Callum Ilott is on pole, with Tsunoda in 2nd and Ghiotto lining up third.

So far in 2020, it's been Ilott and Shwartzman trading the lead in the championship. SHW lines up 16th for the feature race at Monza.

.... And commentary is so much better with Alex Jacques!

I see Mich Schmacher had a bit of an off yesterday. How is he doing in it?

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I find myself catching a good bit of the F2 coverage recently. Great move to have it run on same weekends and tracks, and greet coverage by Sky F1 too.

Seems like Schwartzman in line for the Alfa seat, with Schumacher and Ilott both in the Ferrari programe also. Tsunoda may get into the Alpha Tauri, and Renault have two promising drivers in Zhou and Lungard, but no seats for them...

He is 7th on the grid for the feature today. I think he's had three podiums in the last 3 races, but it's a stretch now to catch the two leaders Ilott and Schartzman.

Great mid field battles and all three Ferrari academy drivers now separated by three points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,708 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

Some race today. Great start from Mick Schumacher. Geoff the print sorted well and capitalised on others making mistakes in the pit.

This stuff is good because it's not polished to bits. Some things do go wrong and we get to enjoy watching the pressure.

The feature race was very good today. Ilott had a great fight back through the field after a dodgy pitstop stranded him at the back.

Great race from Mick Schumacher and not a bad place to win as a Ferrari driver program too win and comprehensively beat the other drivers on the program.

However, Schumacher is one of the weaker Ferrari academy drivers in my view. Schwartzman is a much better driver and should be promoted above the others. Calum Ilott next and then Schumacher.

Schumacher flat spotted his front right in the Sprint. He'll be lucky to hang onto 5th.

I hope karma comes back to bite Ticktum's race.

    Anyone but Tictum

What happened at the end there. Ticktum pulled over to one side after taking the chequered flag. Something is a bit amiss?! Let's see if Race Control sniff out a possible technical infringement.

Ha ha, Ticktum. What a gem. Today has been a great day for Motorsport drama.

Still, this series is really offering something interesting to watch every race weekend.

    Sochi

This weekend race times are much different so worth noting:

    Qualy, Friday at 12noon
    Feature Race: 8.15am
Sprint Race: 8.55am (not sure if daylight saving changes in Russia).

It was a lovely move wasn't it. Really good drive from him today, set his personal best lap time on the last lap. Shows just how good a job he did managing the tyres. His consistency is incredible this season

3 teams to appeal the race win, or at least are considering it it seems. Hope the race win stands, that was a quality race from Schumacher.

Half points and a count back on positions for the previous two laps. Will Mick Schumacher get the third place spot? He was in fourth at the end of lap one, and took third around the third/forth lap.

Count back was to lap 5 so still a podium. Glad both drivers were okay after that accident, it was horrifying to watch real time. Aitken said he had a puncture and basically went straight on. I wonder if the puncture happened when he started to squeeze Ghiotto

Jesus, a few years ago and different barriers things might have been very different - glad that they're both OK!

Both Mick Schumacher and Callum Ilott to get a run in the F1 FP1 sessions at the Efiel grand Prix in two weeks. One in the Alfa, and the other in Haas. Schwartzman will get to run also in the FP1 session at the Abu Dhabi grand Prix weekend.

Will be good to see how they perform.

Schumacher had really come on in the last few races. Send to be like his f3 championship where he didn't take the lead until the second half of the season. It's good championship to lose now.

I expected more of Schwartzman tbh but he really has found it hard in the last couple of rounds.

The calendar next year shortcut for cost measurements. F3 and F2 not racing at the same tracks anymore together.

Feature Race is at 9.10am Saturday morning.

Ilott needs a win with Schumacher not scoring too many points to run this battle of to Sunday morning's Sprint Race... Only 18 points between them.

It's about two things this weekend during the final two races, the championship win for the top two, and position in the standings to get super license points. Tsunoda needs to retain 3rd place to get a drive opportunity in F1 next year. Lungaard, Mazepin and Swartzmann are only trailing 3rd place by between 2-7 points. Fun times ahead...

Edit. SORRY, my bad, there's two more races next weekend on the outer track! So lots of points to play for for all the top 6 drivers!!

After this morning's feature race, these are the standings...Ilott closing the gap to just 12 points. Tsunoda just slightly ahead of Mazepin.

    1|M. Schumacher|203
    2|C. Ilott|191
    3|Y. Tsunoda|157
    4|N. Mazepin|150
    5|C. Lundgaard|145
    6|R. Shwartzman|144

Tomorrow's Sprint race, and next week's race weekend sessions to go.

A real champion smashes in this situation into his contender and not some unrelated bystander. Lesson to be learned

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,708 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

That was some sprint race. Only 2 points gained by Schumacher. Ilott will in deed learn from that one.

Tomorrow's Sprint race, and next week's race weekend sessions to go.
So, there are five drivers in contention for the title with one race left. If only things were similar in F1.

    Pos.|Driver|PTS
    1|M. Schumacher|205
    2|C. Ilott|191
    3|N. Mazepin|162
    4|R. Shwartzman|159
    5|Y. Tsunoda|157
    6|C. Lundgaard|145

Next weekend has 40 points from the two races. There's a point available for fastest lap in each race as well as 4 points for pole. It'd be a stretch for Mazepin to win the championship being 43 points behind with only 46 on offer!

It really is the top two in contention, while 3rd place is a big battle between the other four drivers! It'll be an interesting weekend.

Great feature race there. Tsunoda, Zhou and Schumacher the standouts.

Mazepin’s going to be entertaining next season somewhat

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 407 ✭✭tipp_tipp_tipp

Pretty wild finish to that one. Mazepin seems intent on shoving someone in the wall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,412 ✭✭✭lolie

Great race to watch, glad Mick didn't lose many poins for the championship.
So Haas swapping a driver that crashes a lot for a driver that tries to put other drivers in the wall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,904 ✭✭✭✭skipper_G

Great feature race alright, What a finish!
Mazepin has form for overly aggressive defensive moves. He's very unlikeable imo

Schumacher starting at the front for the sprint race tomorrow and giving away no points to Illott after starting 18th. That is a massive recovery

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,631 ✭✭✭✭antodeco

Mazepin was driving overly dangerous in my opinion. He seemed to go that 10% too much. Some of those moves could've ended very badly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,708 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

Mazepin was way too aggressive in defending. Definitely did not leave a car's width. He was handed two penalties which bumped him down to finish 9th in the race classification. He also lost out dropping a place in the standings to 5th.
