Scottie Scheffler was outside 20 feet in regulation on five holes today in his first competitive round this year.

Bit late, but Shane and Rory both with acesin the 1st round

Straka with that birdie on 17 has possibly spoiled and broken up the final group pairing of McIlroy and Lowry for tomorrow. He's moved to -15 as well.

TThe fecker birdied 18th to ensure it wouldn't happen. If he'd stayed on same score they would've been out together

Straka deserves a lot of kudos for battling back after his terrible start to the back nine. I think it'll take a great round to stop him.

Lowry will really want to beat him after the rainy end to the Honda Classic a couple of years ago.

Was just looking at Scotties record over the last twelve months including this tournament last year. He's been outside the top ten twice which is insane.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,187 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

That was a dreadful par 5 6th for both Lowry and McIlroy for different reasons. Shane makes bogey after an out of bounds 2nd shot. And Rory, the only player today to land on the green in 2 shots, misses a 3 to 4 foot birdie putt. Shocking.

Shane was in the hazard otherwise he’d have to replay the shot

Rory made up for that birdie miss by sinking a 20 footer on the par 3 7th. He's in the lead by 1.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,187 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Rory has dropped a shot on the 8th. Never gave the par putt enough strength. So he's level with Straka on -16.

Rory back into the outright lead with a birdie on 10.

Brilliant to have the 2 lads up there. Most interested I've been in a PGA event in a long while. Bonus of bank holiday tomorrow always helps when watching

McIlroy moves 2 clear with ba birdie 2 on 12. Lowry gets a birdie 2 as well, so he joins Straka on -16, 2 behind Rory. They were 2 excellent tee shots from them.

That tee shot with the driver on 14 was terrific from Rory. Cut the corner, hitting it over the trees and bombed it down the fairway. It's something I used to do when playing Tiger Woods at Pebble Beach on console back in the day. Completely different circumstances though. 😂

Serious eagle on 14 by Rory, should see it out from here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,187 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Lovely eagle putt from 25 feet on 14 by Rory(-20). He's 3 clear, as Lowry moves into outright second with a birdie, -17.

McIlroy is something else when playing his best stuff, unreal

Just watched a reply of tee shot on 7th. Are they not using tees on that hole or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,468 ✭✭✭big_drive

That was bad form from Shane there not shouting fore. I know there was only one guy over there in that spot but still not good enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,187 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Lowry has clobbered a marshall with his tee shot on 15. No shout to warn him, it leaked well right. The guy went down, but the commentators say he has got back up, and it hit his shoulder. It's gotta hurt though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,187 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

McIlroy 4 clear with another birdie. Lowry should have made birdie too, but narrowly missed. -21 with 3 holes left, Rory has a chance to match or beat Snedeker's course record of -22.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,187 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

That was extremely fortunate by Rose on 18 to move to -18, and join Lowry in a tie for 2nd. Hopefully Shane can pick up a birdie to claim outright 2nd for the money and points.

Vintage stuff from Rory. You'd be hoping 2025 will be a massive year, especially with all that off course stuff out of the way. Early signs are promising

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,187 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Well done Shane. He gets birdie on the last and secured outright 2nd place. Rory wins, he played within himself on the last, so Snedeker keeps his course record.

Superb performance by McIlroy. Great stuff from Lowry to get the birdie on the last to get outright second place. Also well done to Seamus Power in T17 too!

Ya Powers result was great, he's not had the best of times with a while

This is Rory's usual, wins a big tournament at the end of the European tour season, hits the PGA tour and wins an early event and then does very little until major.

However on this occasion I was impressed with the fact that he had some game management. He hasn't had that for a long, long time.

He needs to continue to play that way all the time because it's what you need in majors. If he keeps that up he might be winning majors this year.
