How is school going?

Ok, I would like this to be a friendly thread. Recounts from teachers and parents of how schooling and teaching is going. Advice, what is working and what needs to be looked at etc

    Day 1
Just the teachers in today. Visors and masks in place, I had forgotten how bright my room is but I am on the side that catches the sun and also on the side that has the yard, so it is going to be noisy going forward as breaks will be more or less ongoing all day.

I came in feeling ok not too nervous, mind you my innards were playing tricks on me for most of the night, only got 2 hours sleep which is slightly less than usual.

As I am SET, I organised the room for 3 children at a time, but I may have to take some 1 to 1. Being only allowed take the children in small groups together is going to be frantic with the back and forward and that is if I am not subbing in classes. It is also going to be awkward for teachers as I will be back and forward all day.

We had a meeting split into groups which was excellently socially distanced. Some wore masks, some visors and some nothing at all, each to their own.

Lunch was weird. It has been decided to give us access to the staffroom but there are just a few tables with 2 chairs at each, so we can eat in our bubbles so to speak. I ended up just staying in my room for lunch as the staffroom was just so unrelaxing.

Wearing the mask all day with the visor was ok except it kept fogging up as I forgot to do the toothpaste trick. I changed masks half way through the day.

Everyone is keeping their space and standing back to talk which is great and our cleaner said we went through a ton of hand sanitiser.

Looking at the classrooms, bringing the children in and out, organising hand washing as per guidelines is going to be a minefield along with collecting and distributing books. There are a lot of things that have to be looked at and tomorrow will throw up the new challenges, of trying to get 900+ children into school staggered and out again. It is going to be fun!

    Day 2
Well we had a plan to get them into the school building it was ok coming in as they came but had to remind them to space out. They sanitised their hands coing in. Some needed reminding during the day to stay in their pods, as they were doing the on the way to the toilet conversation dance.

The kids seemed happy enough in school, a lot of 6th class came in masks or visors or both and stayed in them all day. They got a big welcome back and reminded to distance themselves.

On the way out it felt like organised chaos, we had a system but no system can cope with getting 240 children down the stairs and out the door in a few minutes. They sterilised their hands and walked out class by class. They were told to leave space between each pod and between each class but needed reminding.

So endeth another day. I am going home in a while to find out how the kids got on and if they wore their masks.

How did it go for your children or for you as a teacher?

What is the toothpaste trick and what is SET? :)

Apparently if you rub some toothpaste or liquid soap on a visor till it goes clear it will stop it fogging up. Furniture spray on a mirror does same thing in bathroom.
SET is special education team new lingo for learning support and resource.
