Instant money transfer - flew over to buy car in UK

Hi all, bit of a last minute panic.

My brother flew over this evening to buy a car in the UK off of a private owner.

His crap Ulster Bank shower of #### in the North told him this morning that money would be in private owners account by this evening, he paid 40 extra to do this.

Man still hasn't received money this evening, and brother was hoping to collect car, drive to boat to dublin tonight.

I am now looking at how I can get it to the owner ASAP - it's gonna be an amount of £10,500 sterling, so about €11,700 as I'll be sending it from my AIB here in Dublin.

What's my options? Under P to sort him out. thanks in advance. Only thing I can think of is Revolut

And yes, I know he's a dope for flying over before it hitting the owners account,

    Transfermate may work.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭CBear1993

Is that different from transferwise? I'll look it up.

Someone else mentioned GIRO wireless or something.

Would just be sh*te for me to send the full amount on Revolut or whatever and then the guy still hasn't received it.

Plus there's already money on the way to him with Ulster Bank, nightmare!!!

If money's already on the way you're going to have to wait it out, don't send a second payment. It would be major hassle getting the money back if the seller decided he wouldn't send the excess back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,705 ✭✭✭User1998

Best thing for him is to just relax in a hotel for the night if money has already been sent.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭CBear1993

I'd agree with you both to be honest, he's adamant he's getting the overnight boat home.

SCAM ALERT, don’t dream of sending another penny. Don’t risk it or both u and car buyer could be out of pocket. Don’t do it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 317 ✭✭gooseygander

Don’t do it, u r in dangerous waters with no comeback

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,244 ✭✭✭sdanseo

Do not, under any circumstance whatsoever, send any money ... unless you dont want it back.
Buy him a hotel, hell buy him room service and a high end nighttime visitor if you have to, but dont send another 12 grand when he has already sent it.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭CBear1993

Yeah, he’s going to meet the guy now.

My sister who transferred the CHAPS payment this morning for him says it will go through in the morning, brother now staying over. Ulster bank have been totally and utterly useless and won’t answer, all day they have put them on hold and Cut them off, or saying they can’t help. That’s UB for you and the north in general :D

I don’t know about the money coming in in the morning, maybe NI is different as it’s UK to UK technically? I’d have my doubts that the payment will not reach the sellers account until Monday now ?

Agreed I told him no more money is being sent. Even when he meets him and THINKS he’s genuine. Apparently they are going to sellers local bank branch tomorrow, not sure how that will help.

Maybe they’re going to suck the money through the internet thingmabob

Normally UK to UK transfers are completed within minutes.

Considering he paid Ulster Bank £40 extra he should not let them away with this.

So has he already received the keys and signed the car over? Seems a bit risky to transfer money beforehand if not

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭CBear1993

Yeah he’s already had it out with Ulster bank this year about a number of things, they are useless. I know loads of people have left them recently in NI and Ireland.

I’d be leaving them first thing next week to be honest. On their website it states that CHAPS payments reach any UK to UK bank same day guaranteed before 5:30.

Plus the sellers account is Bank of Scotland Halifax, which is Natwest, all under same umbrella as Ulster bank.

The seller is genuine, he’s met him now at his house and saw the car. Staying up in hotel tonight and heading to sellers bank branch in the morning.

If it’s left Ulster bank it must be a problem on the sellers end, although I wouldn’t take UB’s word for it. Joke of a bank.

Mistake by my brother also heading over to Uk on a plane before car had been seen and money had reached owners account. Such a rushed job!

...seriously? Surely you'd want to see the car and meet the seller before sending money?

Sure he’ll need to isolate anyway. No need to rush home

He has done this with cars over the last 10 years. Gets loads of videos from seller and documentation, does credit checks etc. hasn’t been caught out.

    I agree though it’s a big risk.

Perhaps he made an error in the recipients account number ?

    Has it arrived this morning?

This is a problem with UK banks still allowing to use the old fashioned sort code and account number, even though they can use IBAN versions with checksums.

And just as important, what car is he buying?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,832 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

Perhaps the "owner" of the receiving bank account just wanted to have an extra day or two to make his getaway after draining it

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,397 ✭✭✭CBear1993

No he's met the guy last night and this morning, his bank branch is closed due to covid. He's very genuine, 100% sound. He's just gonna have to come home today or wait it out to monday.

The man hasn't asked for any additional money or anything. Ulster bank non existent on phone on their emergency lines.

Brother is happy he's seen the car, drove it, it's immaculate, mercedes c220. Seller is very reputable and not a trader.

Considering coming home today and having the car collected via transporter next week. Sounds better than sending money twice i.e revolut today, and leaving with the car today.

Which would be the most instant out of Revolut, Paypal, Tranferwise for an amount of €11,430 Euro

Or will none send today from AIB Irish account to UK Bank?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,705 ✭✭✭User1998

Revolut is instant but it would take until Monday to get from AIB to Revolut. PayPal is instant

    .

Could he not call the banks contact centre, they will be open regardless of the branch being closed and should be able to see a pending payment? Also would his online account not show a pending payment?

Who chose the day for the transfer/pick-up?

If it was at the insistence of the seller, I might be a bit more worried....initiating it for a Friday when a "delay" will also give the weekend.

Not for this amount, Visa Debit has a daily limit (I think €1500) and bank transfer into paypal takes a few days. Unlikely but I suppose possible that the OP has a credit card with a €12k limit that might do the trick.

Still think it's an appalling idea and much better to just wait until Monday and ring the bank. Having no patience is not worth 12 grand.

Good point also made re the quarantine. If he's that impatient it sounds like he won't bother.
For the sake of those around him please suggest that he abides by those rules too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,705 ✭✭✭User1998

You don’t do a bank transfer to send money to PayPal, it’s linked to your bank account, it’s definitely instant

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭bobbyy gee

The other bank could hold the money for a week Irish banks used to do this all the time even for checks
Transfer services take minutes I send money world wide in minutes but watch fees paypay and western Union use high percentage I use ria but they only have few places in Ireland to collect money they have 5 Euro charge and you can keep money in same currency so there's no hidden change fees

Yeah, in the 3 minutes the transfer would take, the value would have changed by a few hundred quid, upsetting one or other of the parties.

Is there a happy ever after here? Deal eventually done and on the ferry home or stuck in blighty waiting for the bank to open on Monday.

Bitcoin would also be fierce handy for a seller if they weren't a seller but a scammer. No need to have to try to open a dodgy bank account to receive the funds.

Nope. Brother stayed Friday, Saturday the sellers bank was closed due to Covid.
Had to get the boat home Saturday night as no flights into Belfast or Dublin after 1pm Saturday, and he only had driving license as flew from Belfast, so Ryanair option was a no go :o

Ulster bank rang this morning to confirm nothing on their end, now lies with sellers bank. Absolutely hilarious the way these banks operate in this day and age.

I’ve been chanting the Revolut/PayPal or at least something to him for the last couple of years, hope it finally hits home.

Once money is received seller is then happy to let him get a car transporter sorted ( lot of guys from our area in north do it) to take the car home.

If you didn’t laugh you’d cry :D:D I was in stitches laughing to him yesterday about being in England for the guts of 2 days for f*ck all.

Something has to give here though as in bitcoin or whatever. It brothers fault for being so stupid 100%, but also Ulster bank did not deliver on their promise of CHAPS same day payment by 5:30pm. Unforgivable on their part. Or the sellers bank Halifax RBS

He has two weeks quarantine now before he can leave the house again and then two more weeks after he returns with the car he must have plenty of holidays or be losing a lot of pay over buying a car.

OP mentioned the money was sent from a bank “up north” and also mentioned that there are a lot of “guys from our area in north” that transport cars, and he also flew from Belfast, so it’s likely he is from N.I, none of our business where he’s from or if he quarantines either

It’s all our business no one should be leaving the 26 counties unless it’s an absolutely vital reasons -I.e. sick relative etc.

I went to London to buy a car about 8 years ago.

Had everything lined up but didn't pick up either of the two cars I had banked on.

Went it to Harrods food hall for a 2 hour lunch. It was fantastic.

I've been reminded more than once by my wife about the flying to London for my lunch

A normal transfer would have arrived by this morning - especially since Ulster Bank & Halifax are both RBS Group banks - I'd be checking whether the destination account was entered correctly as I mentioned before.

So you disagree with all the expert advice on travel, quarantine, virus spread etc? You weren’t at the golf society event last Wednesday were you.

People are idiots when it comes to fighting this virus, this thread is yet another proof of this.

Halifax are part of Bank of Scotland which in turn is owned by Lloyds Bank.

Ulster is part of Natwest which is part of Royal Bank of Scotland.

New rules on transfers came into effect last month that may have slowed the transfer. The name of the person you are paying must match the name on the bank account. Previously you only had to have the account number.

Ferries are fairly empty these days. A cient of mine has been over and back a good few times over the last few months, social distancing very easy. Once the usual hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette is followed it's fine. He stays in his own cabin and avoids the common areas.

I wouldn't want to be banking on Revolut in a situation like this, they are notorious for holding transactions for weeks if not months with very little customer service

What happened in the end with this - was it a scam? Did the brother get the car?

We are perfectly free to visit the other 6 counties on this island to buy cars if we wish. In fact, the only county we are prevented from travelling to buy cars on this island at the present moment is Kildare - unless you live there, in which case you can’t leave it for the purposes of buying a car.

You could also travel to any country on the Green List for the purposes of buying a car if you wished.

People are idiots alright, but not for the reasons you’ve outlined.

It doesn't have to upset anyone unless you decide to be upset. Set up the rules of the game from the outset. i.e. you both check the reference rate at the time of agreeing to do the deal. That's it. Anything that happens after that is noise/irrelevant.
Bitcoin would also be fierce handy for a seller if they weren't a seller but a scammer. No need to have to try to open a dodgy bank account to receive the funds.
In the same way as cash would, yes. You don't do a deal with cash or bitcoin unless you're certain everything else about the deal is in order.

I'd consider him a dope for buying the car before he sees it. All things considered, the money is in the sellers bank, your brother now owns the car regardless what's wrong with it. Your brother has no haggle room.

    If the car even exists.

The brother was stung. Either that, or this is a wind-up; OP has been active on some other threads in the past few days.

Car is back now safely in North at brothers house. Class motor, immaculate inside, you wouldn’t pick one up on this island that’s for sure, for the money. He went to look at a Merc very similar in Belfast 2 weeks ago and it was £2,500 more expensive, and not as high spec.

Don’t have a notion what the issue with banks was in the end. But he came home last weekend and a local car transporter brought the car back from the owners house in the middle of last week.

Both parties now happy but a lot of hassle.
He could easily sell the car on now and make a good bit on it. But keeping it as it’s a great buy.
