Favourite film or TV villain?

I'm watching Sexy Beast at the moment. Ben Kingsley as Don Logan is just so difficult to watch - utterly menacing. Yet there's something kinda child-like about him - it's like he has a personality disorder, not just a short temper. Ben Kingsley is so ridiculously good.

Similar discomfort is caused by Fletcher the terrifying music teacher in Whiplash (like the drill instructor in Full Metal Jacket, but without the humour) and Dennis Hopper as the deranged Frank Booth in Blue Velvet (stuff of nightmares).

Aunt Lydia in The Handmaid's Tale. :(

Combo (Stephen Graham) in the first This Is England. And Joe Pesci as Tommy in Goodfellas.

    Squirmy but fantastic.

Exactly the same thought, you beat me to him (Javier Bardem) by about twenty mins ....

Gently menacing, walking around with a smile and that gas cylinder device. Let me put this in your forehead for a minute, it won't hurt :D

Ben Kingsley too in Sexy Beast + Ian McShane.

Richie from the Sopranos. A demonic Al Pacino, he stole every scene he was in. His trademark Manson lamps could stare right into your soul

Hard to beat Don Logan though.

David Proval / Richie Aprile has to have been the most under appreciated actor and character on that show... he was brilliant. Could switch from downright stupid harmless and hilarious to chilling every bone in your body with one raise of an eyebrow synced to that instantly disappearing smile and weird headlamp eyes... fabulous character and acting, loved him.

The most recent example I can think of is actually the ITV series Unforgotten. Without spoilers the murderer in the latest season and their transformation when they are outed is chilling.

David Tennent in the first season of Jessica Jones is also an excellent villain, something childlike about him too which makes sense given he always gets what he wants, he's had no need to grow up.

Benjamin Linus - The bad guy on lost, a creepy sociopath. He played the part so well.

More contemporary Carol F×cking Baskin, she just couldn't have any competitors in the private zoo game, pity Joe was so stupid, if he just stopped handing out the flyers with the rabbits on them he'd probably still have his zoo now.

Favourite TV villian would be Mark Sheppard as Crowley in Supernatural

Favourite movie villian would be Ricardo Montalbán as Khan in Star Trek II: The wrath of Khan

Honorable mentions also to James Challis as Baltar in BSG, and Giancarlo Esposito as Gustavo Fring in Breaking Bad

I liked Andrew Scott as Moriarty in Sherlock. He reminded of a decadent Roman: oh I’m so terribly bored by everything, please try and die in a slightly amusing way. Or maybe it’ll be more fun if I die.

There's no chance anyone else will have watched this, but Hisoka from Hunter x Hunter is consistently well-written and nearly impossible to predict.

Lalo from Better Call Saul springs to mind as an honourable mention too, extremely charismatic and made the most recent season imo

Ian McShane as Al Swearengen in Deadwood was a great villain, but Gerald McRaney playing George Hearst was evil incarnate.

I'm gonna have to give this to Adolphus Murtry from season 4 of The Expanse.

The previous seasons had some pretty good antagonists (Jules-Pierre Mao, Sadavir Errinwright, Anderson Dawes), but they all had some redeeming qualities or motivations. Murtry on the other hand...

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Legendary line. Arrives at the house, doesn't say thanks for the lift or hi everyone or thanks for letting me stay - just barges into the house because he's "sweating like a cant".

Hank Scorpio for TV and for film it has to be Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood.

Yeah by season four he could have gone either way, uneasy hero or deadly villian. Great actor. Especially when paired up with Jeffery Combs as Weyoun. Who was also an interesting bad guy.

TV - Vince McMahon back in the day.

Film - I wanted to nominate Arjen Rudd but couldn't due to his damned diplomatic immunity.

Ashur the Syrian in Spartacus Blood and Sand. Nick Tarabay nailed that performance completely.

Also most definitely +1 to Norman Stansfield in Leon

That scene where is pissed off and classical music starts blaring. He looks like a criminally insane psychopath about to torch the building...

    So many to choose from.

    John Malkovich in Con Air
    John Lithgow in Ricochet
    Michael Keaton in Pacific Heights
    Rob Lowe in Bad Influence
All the lads in the Usual Suspects
The warden and chief guard in Shawshank

Decent nutcases also Billy the Kid in Green Mile and Brad Pitt in Kalifornia

Jon Cusack was scary in Arlington Road and Nicole Kidman has played a few egreat villainesses e.g. To Die For.

Always loved Nick Cotton in Eastenders too and Q in Star Trek (TNG)

I went to see that with a friend of mine and every time he came on screen she shrunk into her seat. He was absolutely terrifying. I've never seen a villain like him.
