Americans Have The Best Teeth

    Americans have the best teeth.

Even just recently I was watching TV and there was a homeless woman being interviewed and she had the best teeth, all straight and as white as salt.

How do the Americans have such good teeth.

    The white is just bleach.

    Straightness is genetics or braces.

That's possibly why she's homeless. Maybe knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

No :) Its done by a dentist. Or in products by crest.

The ones with money do alright. When I was living there I happened to need a root canal from the local dentist. There was a hard sell as soon as I walked in the door wrt crowns, implants, whitening etc. They even had a finance facility that you could sign up to then and there putting yourself in debt for years.

For me it is the ruin of many a good period movie. You see this ancient Roman soldier with a set of gleaming pearly whites when the reality would be so different

Should the post title not be "Americans have the best looking teeth". The looks are more important to them so they go through the pain and expense of making them look good.

It's not really an industry over here so most of us don't care as long as they work and they're healthy.

A good dose of fluoride keeps ours looking better than the Brits.

You’re more likely to notice bad teeth. It’s like many other things - you don’t see a clean house, but you do an untidy one. Paintwork, the same. I could go on - and on, and on, and on.....

Actually P most people's teeth were in pretty good condition back then, tooth loss was more about advancing age and overcrowding and misalignment was rare. Roman skull for example:

    roman-teeth-1160-557.jpg

Bad teeth only really kicked off after the widespread adoption and use of sugar and that came much later. Before that time it was only the wealthy that tended to have bad teeth because of their richer diet. A Roman soldier would have had pretty good teeth on average. There were some exceptions like ancient Egyptians who had more tooth decay and loss stemming from microscopic particles of rock introduced in the cereal grinding process.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Some americans teeth are a tad too perfect imo.
I spent some time in LA the woman there are all a tad uniform with their surgeries and botox it's just all a tad stepford wives.

But the worst set of gnashers I have seen recently are the ones Katie Prices new fella has...
    They are like doggie dentures!

Neither of them look like natural beauties, tbf. I dislike that unnatural mouthful of crockery look, and I can't imagine it ages well.

Contrary to what the movies have told me, I have seen some less than appealing teeth in American mouths. General levels of dentistry seem pretty high alright.

It's their insurance and the quality of dentists. Insurance companies over there always include dental, and twice a year cleanings. Cleanings are almost an hour, very thorough, here we are in/out in 20 minutes feeling like a waste of money.
Most dentists will offer a free whitening with new patients once an exam and cleaning are scheduled. In my experience the dental offices are all state of the art equipment practicing the latest techniques and designed for comfort. We actually miss and still talk about the dentist my family all had in the US. You go in and when seated in the chair you pick a pair of sunglasses or silky eye cover (some had aromatherapy). You had over the ear noise canceling ear phones on and then pick the film or tv show you want to watch... on the tv installed in the ceiling. Or you can listen to music. Disney + channel for the kids and a stuffed animal to hold onto. A neck pillow is produced and a warm lap blanket. The office had pre-loaded toothpaste on brushes so if you came from the office or wherever you could clean your teeth before facing them with the salad you had in-between your teeth. Upon leaving they gave you a little "goody bag" with a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, whitener refill to go with the tray they first custom made for your mouth at your very first appointment, a coupon for any other treatment you may want in future, chapstick, and a toy for the kids.

That my friends is my experience with the American dental system. Going to the dentist here after coming back was a cold hard slap of reality, ha ha.

And how much were you expected to pay for this insurance that provides such a dental experience?

For the whole family health + dental was 380 dollars a month. You don't want to know about fully covered physiotherapy massages twice a month, ;) or the free pair of glasses and prescription sunglasses every 14 months. Fully covered yearly eye exams and 60% off contacts & fittings. Lots of little extras wrapped up in there. Including out of network coverage, mental health therapy, emergency, travel insurance, egg cryotherapy, lower fees for adoption and even transgender treatments. I'm sure I'm forgetting bits... Something for everyone.

And hair. fake f*cking plasticised hair. Well it’s real but they infuse plastic in it to shore up the holes, or something.

    - in the hope it behaves but something tells me we may be en route to what is an ideal in some peoples mind around here. Those beautiful Brazilians, etc. All bug eyes; balloon butts and bleached hair. Where the clamour for whiteness is an industry in itself

It is a really disgusting industry. Especially in Asia. The paler your skin shows that you are not a peasant that has to work outside. So the paler you are the more you look down on the darkies or whatever the local slur of choice is in those countries. These are homogeneous countries FFS and the cosmetic industry thrives on these opinions.
The poor field workers end up spending (very) hard earned cash on skin whitening.
I can only imagine that a place like Brazil is worse given its Euro/African split.

I second this. Very high quality dental offices and very thorough cleanings twice a year covered under your basic insurance.

Isn't it 'funny' that we know whiteness is setup as the ideal, some pinnacle of being in the world, yet so many are quick to deny there's any such thing as white privilege. And you're eaten alive if you dare mention the term microagressions in the context of how people of colour take these frequent, small little hits or messages that their darkness or blackness is not okay. Or not attractive, or not safe, not honest, not equal. The messages are obviously there, and everywhere. Overtly and covertly.

There is, although it's not nearly as much to do with European paleness and the promotion of that as is often believed, or at least it's far mroe complex than that as these things tend to be.

It has long been in play in many cultures long before Europeans ever showed up. Culture that get "civilised" with the usual social stratifications tends to see it come up. The rich and powerful who tend to work and live indoors are paler, so paleness compared to the norm or poor tends to be more valued. The exceptions are older hunter gatherer cultures where paleness is seen as sickly, or even a representation of death for obvious reasons. It's one reason why uncontacted tribal cultures often quite understandably freak right the hell out when approached by European faces. Many thought these new weird looking pale buggers were ghosts or death himself.

It was in play in Europe too, pretty much right up to the point where Coco Chanel bronzed herself on the riviera and made it fashionable and "healthy". The rich were pale because they weren't peasants working outdoors. They were "blue bloods" because their veins could be seen through their pale skin.

In America it's probably a lot easier to go from having money to get your teeth sorted to being homeless. One serious illness could do it - bankrupt and destitute in a couple of years.
