What do you do at 3AM?

So it's been said a few times that 3AM is a time where 'creative types' get most of their work done. But what work exactly gets done? Maybe you lurk on Boards and converse with like-minded people, or maybe you have a blogpost to write? Or maybe you have a tune to record in your soundproof studio?

What else am I missing? What other creative things do people get done at this interesting time of day?

3am ye I am normally asleep at that time now but there was a time for a while that I used to be up watching the T.V at that time. Not anymore. Really unless you work nights or a late shift or are partying you should be asleep at that time really.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

If I can't sleep, I sometimes browse 503 error boards dot ie. I mostly listen to podcasts or something from the Doc on One archive.

I work nights, so if i'm not "working", I'm playing the PS4 or watching Netflix/anime/pulling the knob off myself.

As someone who suffers with anxiety, insomnia, sleep apnea and emotional hyperarousal, a 3am sleep often alludes me!

If I'm not fighting with myself to try and sleep, I'm figuring out which if the many meditation sounds i should listen to (none of which work).

After getting more angry at being unable to sleep, I try a few podcasts and then browse my phone (which is a bad idea).

Eventually, I retreat to another bed or the couch to try and distract myself of my inability to sleep.

Looking at my clock knowing my alarm goes off in 6 hours /5/4/3/2/1 hours, wishing that ability to sleep, that consciousness detachment kicks in so I can get something. Eventually falling asleep and getting a small number of hours sleep.

Oh, the above is every night by the way!

Well right now, stressing out thinking of the 6 am start and the long day ahead, because apparently that’s the best way to go back to sleep...

Not a whole lot really, if I’m not working I’m asleep.

I’m somewhat curious though about the number of posters who can time when they need to go pee

I rehearse specific work tasks for the day ahead and the daily routine .The time I have to leave and personal business during the day etc.

Go on autopilot then during the day ahead if no sleep

Also review the overall picture of work life and how it's going

Self hypnosis and NLP. Standard tools these days. Jeez, you must live like an animal, eliminating when your body decides it's time. Wouldn't like to be stuck in a lift with you and your corporeal compulsions.

Unless you are a writer I see no reason to be awake at 3am, some artists or writers get up at 7am because it's quiet, they will not be interrupted by emails or phone calls.
I just think it's important to have a schedule,
Get 8 hours sleep, whatever type of job you are in. Staying awake til 3am is not a good idea for most people, it won, t make you more productive.

Usually do my boring paperwork stuff, look after my elderly dog who is very restless at that time, and browse the internet. Used to hate when this place shut down every night at 3am! Always get hungry around then too, so try to fight the urge to eat.

Won’t make you productive but a lot of people like me go though sleep issues in their life. This can be the result of a physical problem or psychological or maybe both. Not a choice. For years I was jealous of friends, girlfriend who could say the word ‘ goodnight’, head onto pillow and off to dreamland..

With me it was very bad migraines which has been put down to long term stress caused by a couple of work issues. Diagnosed as such by doctors and when I left the job as recommended my sleeping overnight just improved, within a day or two.

When you are under severe stress your body has issues processing certain vitamins which was the root cause of my issue.

Am hooked up to a CPAP machine these days and sleep solid from about 11 to 7

I'm in the "desperately trying to sleep and getting up regularly for a pee." camp. It's somewhat comforting to know I'm not alone. :o

Some people just have "sweet spots" in the day when they find they're most productive.

I find mine is late in the night when everyone's in their room or asleep, I love to get work done, especially niggling things that require a bit of focus. I'd often go to bed at three and get up when Morning Ireland comes on the alarm at 8 then work for a few hours and nap during lunch, then shower and finish some work. It's a really nice, relaxed pace to live at, with no energy dips, and lots of time for family and work. I could happily keep to this schedule forever, if I don't have to return to the office.

We don't all fit easily into that 8/12 hour sleep/wake schedule. I couldn't sleep for 8 hours, and I wonder if most people do it out of convenience or need?

Obviously it will depend on your family situation, kids, and whether you can work from home or not. It is great to have the choice in regulating your day, these days.

never heard of the 3am idea. some people (like myself) tend to work better in the evening/night and some during the day - but everyone is different. people eat breakfast at different times - dont know if its anything to do with creativity
