Bit of an oversight to not put anything out on either day of the quarterfinals, surely there'll be something later on.

Nothing today after the 2 QF's and the controversy around Grant Wahl passing away. Very poor form, live shows or not. Coverage of this WC hasn't been great overall, only thing of any substance was Ken's (brief) chat with Tariq.

And Ken's story about smashing into the doors.

Other than that all I remember is Murph constantly talking over Ken.

I opened Twitter at 2 o clock Saturday morning, first tweet I saw was his talking about the Dutch goal the next was 'Grant Wahl was such a nice man, may he rest in peace' incredibly jarring.

I know they had him a few times in the radio days, I Googled to see if they had him on SC, and they did in 2016 with Des Bishop in New York, the only thing I remember about that pod is Bishop taking the piss out of them for leaving Newstalk, all I've seen is people saying how nice and generous he was, it is pretty sad.

Very happy to hear Ken laugh at the English pundits who have been advocates of Let it Flow see what it's like in action and go against them.

Tim's description of Messi's transformation was great, "He's decided to be less Catalan and more Argentine".

Ken describing Maguire’s distribution as loading up big Bertha and kicking it into touch is spookily accurate.

The fact they were involved in promoting the Roddy and Harrington books would compromise their public opinions on those books I think.

Perhaps, but I'd rather they did the shows with them, than didn't just for a book review pod. Seems to be less quality in books this year compared to other years when I've wanted to read them all.

    The Game book sounds fascinating

there should have been 2 football podcasts, one for each day of quarter finals. I feel like arg-ned was kind of brushed over in the latest pod. instead, subscribers get a rugby pod today. yawn

We can't really expect them to be pumping out content 7 days a week, especially when doing live shoes.

There's a football pod later today thankfully

I think it is reasonable enough. It's predominantly a football podcast and it's the quarter finals of the world cup!

I really don't see why the rugby deserved an almost 50 min pod. I genuinely don't know anyone in person that listens to the rugby pod, it's an instant delete for a significant number of people.

The football got an hour and a half and rightly so.

Some days some of the pods have been less than 40 min and I would imagine some had less than 30 min content when you take out audio beds. Yes, they were doing live shows but they did know the world cup was on. Maybe they should have had the live shows out of the way or else the live shows on days where it wouldn't hamper the WC content.

    I think it's a fair complaint.

Ken’s usual style is with a wink and a chuckle and a raised eyebrow and we love him for it. I know it was only a minute or so at the end of the pod, but I was impressed by his ability to switch gears to straight reportage and sincerity when talking about the death of Grant Wahl.

I’ve said it before I’d pay a few quid extra for a version of the pod with all rugby content removed.

Getting rid of the the effort of skipping sections/episodes or missing the absolute cringe of listening to the rugby lads referring to each other by their unimaginative over familiar nicknames would make it worth it for me

I'm sure they know their download figures.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,851 ✭✭✭Raoul

Yeah but they don't know their download and delete figures.

They really should be sending out a survey to the members. After all it is member led journalism....

Rugby is hugely popular, they're going to cover it. That's not saying that I find it any way interesting or would shed a single tear if we never had to hear a word about it ever again on the show, but I'm sure there's plenty out there that are interested.

I'd be interested to know do the proper rugby fans actually like the coverage? For casual or non fans the feeling is it's poor bit maybe if you are proper into it its enjoyable?

I mean for people that rugby is their number 1 sport.

I'd love to see what this thread would look like if they had longer and more frequent rugby pods.

    Rugby is popular

Not sure if I'm supposed to read that out in an accent or not.

Nice Hugh McIlvaney impression from Ken this morning

Disappointed that Ken thought it was a penalty. Crazy to compare it with Schumacher in '82. Ken, Lee Dixon, Ally McCoist and the ITV ref expert all seemed to see the goalie "challenge" for the ball. What kind of mass dilusion is this?

He came out, made himself big and stopped. He didn't challenge for the ball. I'm amazed that so many people think it's a penalty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,582 ✭✭✭Still Ill

I think it was a definite penalty. Sure, it's a no win situation for the keeper once he doesn't win the ball, but you can't just block off a player like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Leaving the context out if I knocked the ball pass a player and was clobbered by the out stretched leg of the opposition player I think I’d being fouled.

I wouldn’t normally pay much attention to Ken views on foul play as I think he’s whistle happy but in this case it’s an unlucky foul but a foul.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,032 ✭✭✭Raoul Duke

A goalkeeper has to be able to make himself big though. Otherwise every striker upon approaching a spread out goalie can kick the ball anywhere and then just run into the goalie and get a penalty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,146 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

I can't understand the debate about the penalty tbh. He came out, didn't get the ball in any way and took the man out. Thought it was an absolute stonewall.

I love Rugby but Rugby on SC is hard to take, calling guys by their nicknames ROG etc is cringe.

and I know he is Marks brother but Shane Horgan is so hard to listen to
