MF 390 hour meter not working.

My brother has a 1989 MF 390 4WD and recently the hour meter stopped working. I can't seem to find any useful information on this problem and was hoping someone on here could offer some help. Is this meter connected to the alternator - and if it is is there any way of checking the signal from the alternator for example ?…
