Family car, petrol - 6,000 euro

Hi guys, looking for advice on a petrol family car for around 6,000 euro.
We already have a Toyota Corolla Verso, but with school drop offs and everything else a second car is needed. Just looking for recommendations I was thinking something along the lines of Skoda Octavia should cover the basis well (we've 3 kids) and we have the Verso if we needed the extra space for anything else. Any other suggestions that would fit the bill? Has to be petrol as it's mostly short journeys, I think hatch back boot would be better than saloon. Don't want another MPV , one is enough for any family. Preferably 2010 onwards.
    Cheers in advance.

A Honda Jazz or Mazda 3 would be great choices, very reliable engines.

Honda Jazz would be on the smaller size of what I was thinking, especially if we had to carry the 5 of us, hadn't really thought about the Mazda 3.

There is a 07 estate vrs octavia on donedeal for €3400 in tipperary, its a petrol and looks well in the black colour

A prius might be worth a look. Not the most exciting to drive but economical and reliable. Service costs are generally low.

Good space in them too with the hatchback and the seats down if you are carrying kid's bikes etc.

Had a look but any in my price range the mileage is very high, plus I've never been overly gone on them tbh, but thanks for the suggestion.

You won't go far wrong with the Octavia estate.

Slim pickings at the minute, might have to include Skoda Rapid & Seat Cordoba on the list, the Leon seem to be the same size as a VW Golf or do they come in estate?

You can get the newer (2013 ish onwards) in estate. They’re not in your price range though.

    Have you considered a Prius?

I did but the mileage seems to be fairly high on any in my budget, and I'm not overly gone on them, just not for me

If you go back to 2008/2009 you'll find a few other petrol cars also
For instance this Volvo V70 estate or an Audi A4 petrol estate, but once you pass 2010 they are mainly diesel

    €1200 tax on the Volvo!

I was surprised to see the A4 at €1200 tax also

We have 2 kids and a 2009 c max 1.8 petrol (old style) . 1.8s are a great engine with a timing chain. 125bhp and pulls well. Get about 600km for 60eu with mixed driving. Hard to find a low mileage one though but they are a great car going for peanuts. It actually handles quite well too.

    Example:

Thanks for the suggestions Mad_Mike, but the tax on either of those would be a killer

If three kids are old enough, something like a suberb, passat, mazda 6, Avensis should accommodate them at back seat with boosters. smaller than that it will be a squeeze.

Yeah would consider any of them, the kids are 9,6 & 3. Problem I'm finding at the moment is finding petrol (any amount of diesel cars out there) where the mileage isn't crazy & tax isn't mental, I'll have to keep looking, need it for when the schools get back we are doing ok with just the one car at the moment I had considered the i40 also but there isn't any petrol versions
    coming up.

I appreciate any responses just in case it's something I've overlooked, if I was looking for a diesel tax would be ok on the A4 , Volvo would still probably be high though.

    1.6 Avensis. €390 tax.
Not a hatchback but has a big boot and you have the Verso if you’re bringing something big.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,655 ✭✭✭Mad_Mike

Just looking again and although the car is smaller than the Octavia etc, in estate form, a Fabia could be a runner too as it's only a 1.2 petrol and cheap to run with tax, insurance, fuel etc
The issue is, when you are looking for a hatchback AND post 2008 petrol, you are more or less stuck with smaller cars apart from the odd car like the Octavia which is a larger family car with a hatch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 284 ✭✭parttime

Think I have to include saloons at this stage, hatch back boot is limiting an already limited market, think I'd have an Octavia or Rapid over the Fabia given the choice.

How often will 5 of you go anywhere in it. You be using the verso for that. Your main problem may be car seats at present. However by buying a fairly fuel efficient petrol car one you can still do commuting and leave Verso to persons with the children.

I bet you there will not be two days a year the five of you will be in it. I got away with a Berlingo van as a second vehicle for 8 years. Person who was by themselves took the van. Car went with the kids.

I 100% get what you're saying, I do shift as part of my job so there will definetly be plenty of times where there will be 3 kids in the back between school runs, drop off collections for sporting activities etc etc, and I would think the 5 of us will be in this car more than twice a year, it also doesn't have to be my wife traveling with us, could be a grandparent the Verso was a necessity at the time as the 3rd child was due, we've gotten away with 1 car up until now but sadly the second car is needed now and I'd like a bit of space in the car to allow for all 5 of us to travel in the one car. As I'll be the main driver of this car my preference would be an Octavia, I've also included Rapid, Avensis, Corolla, Toledo, i40 ( doesn't seem to be any petrol for some reason, diesel was obviously the more popular choice) I understand with the criteria of what I'm looking for and budget, petrol car that is a limited market , but that's what I'm looking for.

Would you consider a Nissan pulsar?! 1.2 turbo petrol, I was surprised by the amount of space in the back of them. Nice car

You will find it very hard if not impossible to find a large family petrol saloon from 2009-2015. Price bracket is immaterial. Nobody bought them as tax and fuel efficiently of diesel made them impossible to sell second hand. Its a matter of what you come across tax will be near the 500 mark in lots of them. I know there was some Skoda Octavia with petrol engines sold in that period as the engine was 1.4 but you will struggle with getting virtually anything else.

Sales men in Toyota activity discouraged people from even buying Crolla's in petrol engines not to mind Avensis's

Looks to be the same size car segment as the Auris, anyway feck all there in petrol, mostly diesel.

I'll agree with you there, there was very petrol sold due to dealers pushing diesel, if my driving style and mileage suited diesel I'd have a lot more options but petrol is the viable option for me, I haven't ruled out going the UK route seems to definitely more options there for petrol saloon cars, but I'd have to weight up the value

What would you like ideally? Bit of prestige, something fast, something pretty? There’s definitely something you want that falls outside of the basic need for a car.

Your most practical solution in my mind is something like an 08 Verso for 2 grand.
Obviously you don’t want another MPV. It’s not that they’re too big because they take up lads space than a lot of saloon cars, so there’s something a else there.

The Verso we have is grand, does everything we need it to do, the comment I made above was that the wife likes the Qashqai, she'd prefer on over the Verso, I just think they are a bit overrated just my opinion, I think the likes of a large hatchback/estate or saloon are better over all.

Just looking to get the best bang for buck that I can as won't be changing again for another few years , I understand it's limited for options , trying to up the years where I can as herself will have the policy on this car (she currently is a named driver under my policy) so she won't have a no claims bonus. Personal choice would be the Octavia I just think they are a very practical car, but I may have to up the budget a little. I just wanted to see was I overlooking other good options and then included them into my search as people posted them.

That 1.8 engine in the Audi is a bit fragile and likes a drop of oil. I wouldn’t take the risk anyway. Can’t speak for the OP but a 3 door Golf probably doesn’t fit the bill!

Honda Civic . I have an MPV with3 small kids . 8,5,2. The civic is a great 2nd car. I have the 1.8 but available in 1.4 aswell. It's surprisingly roomy inside with a large boot, ultra reliable, cheap to buy and own. The mpg is not bad either. The civic is a great 2nd car for a family.
