Private Investigations is a nice song, but always thought it was one of the more unlikely chart hits of its time. 7 minutes long almost, no real catchy melody to speak of, spoken lyrics etc, doesnt seem to meet any of the criteria you'd expect of an 80s chart hit and yet chart it did, all the way to No.2! Just bit of a weird one, i always felt. More a great album track feel to it.

Fair point, it's a real "put on the headphones and turn off the lights" tune. It always reminds me of Crime of the Century (probably contender for the "best, shortest intro"!)

U2 - Where the streets have no name. The way it starts so slow and builds and builds. It's brilliant. The intro alone carries me off to a tonne of different places and memories.

The Beach Boys - Good vibrations - The first 25 seconds of this song are actually the best. The song made millions and everyone always remembers the chorus etc but the first 25 seconds totally differed to the rest of the song and in a really lovely way.

Hi folks, after seeing the new post for this thread, I am belatedly catching up with it. There are some great suggestions, many of which I have thanked such as Wuthering Heights, Blue Monday, two songs from The Beatles, Private Investigations by Dire Straits and Ger Rowe's ones. I tried to thank Down Down by Status Quo, but some weird stuff was happening there! In relation to that one and some other youtube links, could people post name of artiste and song as it may not always be possible to open links?

I don't know what it is about this intro but it just caught me unawares when I first heard it on Desert Island Discs. It's a simple piano intro and then he starts singing a list of ice cream flavours. Sounds odd. It is odd, but it is beautifully sad.

Probably my favourite song.
