Lidl have nailed it with the Lidl plus app and offers this year. It'll be interesting to see if their market share is increasing.

Anyone know why baby formula is excluded from the 10% off when you spend €50??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭Escapees

Coz 'breast is best' I would imagine...

Edit: Seriously though, formula is somewhat regarded in the context of baby food the same way as alcohol is in the context of general drinks…

10% off €50 is better than nothing but it’s not great when people will see SuperValu throwing out bonus vouchers and Dunnes doing the usual, granted the prices are higher in the latter two but scouting the specials is the key to these shops, SuperValu are crazy expensive if it’s not a special offer

    The internet isn’t for everyone

I have been going to a new opened lidl and getting €10 off €50 x 2 for the past 5 weeks.

The thing with Dunnes and Super Valu is the vouchers are constant so they are incorporated into the price. Also like if you don't have the Tesco clubcard you won't get the actual price you will pay the super inflated price.

Lidl smiidiil - I have to choose between a Dunnés €10 off €40 (25%) or an Asda £15 off £50 (30%) by year end. But me cupboards do be full

Because milk for babies shouldn't be part of predatory "please spend more money" marketing practises.

    , Likely.

I think it is some sort of governmental if not eu directive that baby milk can’t be reduced or included in special offers . And it is very pricey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 132 ✭✭herrdood

Iirc formula for older toddlers was included in the offers but not that for newborns.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 813 ✭✭✭RCSATELLITES

It's the same in Dunnes aswell in fact all shops. If you look at the terms and conditions in all shops. Baby formula is up there with Alcohol and lottery tickets as excluded items.

Yes - I've seen that but didn't know why it was excluded.

The main reason: Irish & EU law
Ireland follows the EU Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula Regulations, which are based on the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes. These rules aim to ensure that parents’ feeding decisions are not influenced by marketing pressure.
    What the law prohibits
    Retailers cannot:
    Discount infant formula
Include it in multi-buy or “special offer” promotions
Use loyalty points, vouchers, or coupons
Advertise price reductions (in-store or online)
Display promotional signage highlighting value or savings
This applies to infant formula (0–6 months) in particular.
    Why the policy exists
    The government’s reasoning is that:
Breastfeeding has significant health benefits for babies and mothers
    Price promotions could discourage breastfeeding
Formula should be chosen based on medical or practical need—not cost incentives
Babies are a vulnerable population, and aggressive marketing could exploit parental anxiety
    What is sometimes allowed
Follow-on formula (6+ months) has slightly fewer restrictions, but many Irish retailers still choose not to promote it to stay compliant and avoid confusion
Specialist formulas (e.g., for allergies) are typically excluded from promotions as well

The original name for After Eight is A&E, because that's where you'll be heading After you've Ate them. They're disgusting. 🤢

How have they nailed it? I don't find their app much good, and not like that they now only offer their super 6 fruit and veg offers in it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,119 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Ah c'mon now. They're doing their bit to contribute to the increase in diabetes in this country.

Seriously though, more often than not their "Scratch & Win" is junk food, that's when I get them these days . The freebies are gone, replaced with discounts on rubbish.

    You're welcome.

the app went downhill but started off good to get tv numbers required and now they are happy selling the data and keep us lemons happy with a fiver off fifty spend

    The internet isn’t for everyone

I never got my €10 off €40 and €20 off €100 from Dunnes this year in the post. Did they do away with it? Or did you get them.

How do you get the Asda one? Wouldn't mind a trip to Enniskillen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,998 ✭✭✭✭zell12

Dunnes one appeared in my rarely used app. Asda emailed coupon for first c&c. I'm probably using this Asda coupon as you get better value & allows some alcohol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 813 ✭✭✭RCSATELLITES

Ah brilliant 👍 thanks for letting me know. That's good Asda allows some alcohol and definitely better value.

The app has become slow and bloated with terrible UX.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 343 ✭✭MB05

Tomorrow's offer is BOGOF on boxes of Tayto Crisps.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,524 ✭✭✭geographica

    think they were €5.49? 🧐

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,195 ✭✭✭xpletiv

Compeltely agree that the app, and the offers, are both trash and amile away from what we got at the start.

Lidl is just as expensive as dunnes or tesco. Without good offers.

Only thing i go for these days, usually, is milk and bread.

Aldi is now significantly better value, as is the voucher for Dunnes etc. Tesco not so much, still Treasure Ireland.

"Only thing i go for these days, usually, is milk and bread."

That's the 2 things I wouldn't buy in Lidl. Their milk is usually 3 days worse off than other stores, and their bread is a day worse at best as well.

Lidl is better than Aldi though, they have offers. You get some discounts on different products every week, they have a fresh "bakery", their middle aisles are way better and they have warehouse clearance sales.

I was going to say Aldi's savers page is dead(well it was for the past week or so), but they've managed to put 2 offers on it.

    https://www.aldi.ie/aldi-savers

    Massive discounts. 😐

    Yes €5.50.

    Screenshot_2025-12-22-01-24-26-515-edit_com.lidl.eci.lidlplus.jpg

A couple of weeks ago they had Hunky Dory's and King, both cheese and onion boxes, BOGOF. They were €5.50 as well and the offer ran for at least a few days, if not a week. I'm sorry I didn't avail of the offer.
