Private sector job, I'd still apply, but unlikely through linkedin.

Depending on company i would either call HR or send an email.
If it were me i would phone HR dept.
You need to be more personal than LinkedIn.
I had a kindof same situation years ago.
There were 3 of us hired and i was late applicant.
The others did 4 interviews and i did 2.
There is an advantage to phoning HR as if you are interviewed they will remember you....

I once submitted an application for a job vacancy on the day it was due. Got called for interview but was grilled as to why I had left it so late to apply.

If the role is in any way deadline driven, it wouldn’t reflect favourably on you for missing the deadline so have a lock tight excuse.

I would submit my CV anyway - as has been said you've nothing to lose - but it's not a good sign to a prospective employer if you miss your first deadline tbh.
