Mickey Dee sells a house!

Reported in the Sunday Times that
A sale has been agreed for a house owned by Michael D Higgins in Galway for around its asking price of €470,000 — €100,000 more than the president paid six years ago.

Higgins bought 2 Sylvan Road in the Galway suburb of Newcastle at auction in 2014 for €370,000, and rented it to NUI Galway students until late last year, when he served them with a notice to quit as the property was going on the market. The house had been making €2,220 a month until its tenants moved out shortly before Christmas.

    .......

Higgins, who said on The Late Late Show last month that the Covid-19 pandemic had provided an opportunity to “do housing differently” in Ireland, will benefit from a capital gains tax (CGT) exemption by selling the house this year. CGT is usually charged at 33% on any profit from a property sale, but Higgins purchased the buy-to-let at a time when the government had introduced an exemption to kick-start the stagnant property market.

The exemption from CGT applies to all houses bought between 2011 and the end of 2014 sold between four and seven years later. This means if the house reaches its asking price of €470,000, Higgins will make €100,000 tax-free on the investment."

Always uplifting to see a committed life-long socialist winning big in the capitalist system.

Presumably the likes of Corbyn and his pals in Venezuela and Cuba will be thrilled for him.

Not a bad effort OP. I give it a 5/10.

what seem to be the issue?

Are you so happy for him that you felt the need to start this thread?

Are you so enraged by this that you felt the need to start this thread?

What's your thoughts on him selling the house for a profit?

There’s some extremely juicy tabloid style stories about Michael D just waiting to be uncovered. This non story doesn’t cut the mustard.

They wont print that one, same reason a famous boyband producer doesn’t have it printed about him either, media outlets printing it would be blackballed from a lot of PR and music events

It's really uplifting to read so much support for a former landlord who has made a nice tax-free killing on the property market.

And there was I thinking that landlords were the scum of the earth! How rapidly things change when the landlord in question is a tin god to some!

Thanks for raising "awareness" on this story Stack :)

A lot of plebs are very happy to be informed of such things - E100,000 profit and no tax - really shines a light on our leader's motivations; oftentimes, perhaps more than a little at odds with their outspoken opinions.

A lot of wannabe censors on here :pac:

I would never call landlords scum of the earth.
It's a bizarre thing to say imo.

I think the crux of it is he made some students homeless in the midst of a housing crisis, after rinsing them for rent for several years, in order to make sure he got that tax exemption before it expired.

If all that's true then it's most definitely news(thread)worthy.

Some of his 'defenders' might have some choice words to say had it been a different public figure; words that need not be said

In what way would that spectacularly lame attempt at a bit of whataboutery make my OP regarding tax avoidance by Ireland's premier socialist any different?

Perhaps you're too young to remember the words of Leonora Hemsley that "taxes are for the little people"? But assuming that she's right, why isn't the little man in the Aras paying his fair share?

I'd be far more concerned about his obscene salary and no doubt pension pot that we have to pay for, than him selling a property he owned.

Do you think he should've sold it for a loss?

Maybe Higgins should've made a mess of his property dealings and got the taxpayers to pick up the tab like the banks did.

Then we could all be happy, yeah?

Tbf he dont need the money (nor the house),why not donate it to the state?

Even.if state sold it for the 470K,then use that money to build 3 social houses and take people off housing register/direct provision?

its not so much that, its pontificating to people many income rungs lower than themselves that they should be taxed into poverty while at the same time reaping the rewards of not paying the tax levels they pontificate for themselves.

atleast those politicians who live on the median salary (or claim to) are making a more genuine effort at it. If you want to preach about more taxes , step 1 is to donate every cent you earn over your own intended thresholds so you can experience your own hardship.

And he claims he's a socialist.

    And the left believe him!

Funny really - when it's Apple that's doing the tax avoidance every half wit in the country jumps up and down like a flea with rabies, but when it's El Gnomo Magico doing it, it's the biggest non-event since Garth Brooks pulled out of his Croke Park concerts.

But hey! we're Irish and consistency is a British concept with which we have no truck.

Oh a left leaning man sold a house :)

He rack-rented a house he bought as an investment to poor students, evicted them when he wanted to cash in on his investment and make money tax-free (paying less tax than a vulture fund), without a thought for them being made homeless in the middle of the academic year, and you, of all posters, have no problem with that?

Words can't express the hypocrisy you are displaying.

Man preaches about housing and also funding public services with appropriate taxes while appearing to do his utmost to avoid paying such taxes. Man also said he wouldn't run a second time for president. And keeps lecturing us about the need to do the right thing.
