Apple kicks off their first digital only developer conference today with the usual keynote to open the show. It kicks off at 6pm Irish time and is live from the links below, as well as the Apple TV app and developer app etc.

    https://youtu.be/GEZhD3J89ZE

    https://www.apple.com/apple-events/

Rumours so far think there will be smaller updates to iOS/iPadOS/watchOS as well as macOS and tvOS which don't have much info feature-wise so far. Big news of the event could be Apple's switch from Intel chips to their own custom ARM designed chips. Will be interesting to see how the keynote plays out.

Earlier rumours said there could be hardware introduced such as a redesigned iMac and new Apple TV 4K and smaller HomePod. Now they're saying it might not happen, in fairness Apple's recent WWDC events have shifted mostly to software only with the odd Mac Pro tease thrown in.

I'm personally interested to see how they manage with the new digital format, as well as the ARM transition rumours. Only a few hours left till we find out.

No doubt the live commentary here will make the event far more interesting :pac:

Looking forward to it. This will be my first WWDC since hopping on the Apple train some time last year.

I was close to pulling the trigger on a MBP 13” last week but want to see what they say about ARM first, I read the MBP 13 might be the first laptop to get it early next year. Thinking I might hold out until then and just get the new iPhone 12 Pro later this year as my new Apple purchase. :)

    Good Morning...

It will be weird if he doesn't walk out and utter the iconic words

Ooh I thought they were just lights on Earth on the Apple website, presume it's folks logged in to watch or something. Cool.

Is this pre-recorded? Doesn’t have a live feel to it.

Was thinking the same, but doubt Apple would go live and risk the mistakes.

I think iOS 14 will be bigger than small updates as stated by OP.

I think it will be a minor upgrade. Especially if they’re starting with it. Not a surprise after the poor experience that 13 brought from the off.

Well App Library looks big enough and widgets coming too

Still called iOS and not iPhone OS like some predicted.

Being able to launch an app in an App library folder with a single tap is nice.

Might be alone on this but that feels very minor to me. Doesn’t interest me at all.

First time ever that the home screen can be more than just grids of apps?

    I think that's pretty major.

I like how this is not live.

It's slicker and no stupid American cheering.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,359 ✭✭✭DubDJ

The widgets and picture-in-picture are welcome changes. Not sure id be too interested in the list thing. That Siri globe looks a bit crazy too.

Three new core features, one of which was on the iPad with a while - definitely a minor OS upgrade.

It's a major upgrade on the phone. Doesn't matter if it was on iPad.

    More Memoji garbage

Messages becoming more like WhatsApp with these new features. A good thing imo.

I hope the reply options is not just in group chats.

I genuinely never use iMessage because everyone just uses WhatsApp in Europe, it's funny how it's completely flipped in the US.

I much prefer Message, it looks slicker when sending photos and links but as you say Whats App has become dominant.

Yes but what happens if your battery dies?

I’d only just got used to having to slap everything on the home screen and they go Android with their whole setup. Probably will be bette though.

How long before this rolls out? I don’t know their normal schedule.

Usually launches in September. You could try the beta program too.

I removed my Beta profile the other week when Vodafone was acting up as I thought the update that morning was the issue. I must download it again, when would it arrive on that?

Not 100% sure but I think it's usually straight after the presentation or maybe tomorrow.

I personally wouldn't go with beta 1 as it's usually very buggy.

Calls not taking over full screen is welcome.

Yeah might do it with iPad OS and wait until a later release for the phone.

That clips thing looks good if it takes off. Was never implemented properly on android (instant apps). Could probably get rid of a load of apps off the phone if it did develop into something bigger.

it shouldn't have taken so long for them to have automatically switch between devices. I used Bose for years which did this seamlessly so it was annoying when I switched to AirPod Pros and had to do it manually every time I changed devices/

Spatial audio sounds great though. I look forward to that.

Sleep Tracking. Nice. Fast charging to come to Apple Watch would be great though.

Airplay supporting 4K is a nice feature (if I understood that correctly)

The mail app and Safari are two of the main reasons I use an iPhone. Good to give people choice though.

Wow this didn't leak. Apple just dropped the iOS7 of macOS updates. iOS-ification of macOS continues.

Welcome iPadOS to Mac hardware 😞
