In January, both these acts fought it out in the final of the greatest song of the 90s contest.

Nirvana winning 15 - 4 on that occasion.

And even though I am not voting Nirvana here, I would have voted for them in the song head to head. SLTS is a better song than LMR.... Maybe just about!

As a whole REM were much better. There were rumours of a Cobain Stipe collaboration, Kurt was a big fan. Automatic for the people was reportedly playing on repeat when his body was found... So even Nirvana think R.E.M. are a better band!

    That's a great line-up.

I definitely have a favourite between the two bands but I don't really mind which one wins.

I think the final pairing was very predictable but I'm pleasantly surprised about how far Soundgarden made it. I didn't expect that.

    Nirvana

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

This is a tricky one, loved both bands growing up. A taped copy of Nevermind was my first proper album, and REM at Slane 95 was my first ever gig

    Gonna go for Nirvana

The very first gig I went to was U2 at Croke Park in 1985. The opening act on the day were REM, who I only knew from Vincent Hanley playing Radio Free Europe on MT-USA. They were awful, and I remember thinking at the time that we wouldn't be hearing of them for much longer. While they're not my favourite band by any means, I think it's fair to say that they got a lot better and I was just a touch off with my prediction. :pac:

Nirvana are linked strongly to the 90s like the Beatles to the 60s.
Both bands had very clever PR/management and were in the right place at the right time.

I often wondered if Nirvana had continued on and maybe released the odd clanger would they still have such a big following.
They are one of the few 90s bands that you will see lots of young ones wearing T-shirts of today, so still relevant 25 years later.

I don't know if that means they're relevant, it means they're a well marketed brand as an image. You also see lots of teen girls wearing Slayer t-shirts, and they haven't a clue who Slayer are for example.

True. I'd say more Ramones t-shirts are now sold in a year than they ever sold in total when they were active.

How do you know that? Have you asked them?

Great result! Not my era. There were only a handful out of the whole lot that were my thing (Nick Cave, Blur, Verve and REM) so very happy with the result.

    Thanks Kol!

They knocked out three of my nominations. Bastids!

Thanks for another great competition Kolido, even if we all know that Radiohead are the real winners. :D

Thanks Kolido. I couldn't predict the winner so. Oasis bombed.

REM weren't one of my noms but I won't complain. Great band.

Thanks for running this, Kolido. Really enjoyed it.

Deserved winners, its ridiculous how much quality REM have in the 90s, they've got everything, feel good songs, sad songs, meaningful songs, and there seems to be a lot of depth to their lyrics, and with catchy tunes - the real deal

    Thanks for running K
