I hope to have this organized in such a way as to reveal the results in stages by about 9 p.m. same evening.

Just starting the thread now so I have some place to organize the results.

No strict deadline, have asked that the thread be tagged "closed to entries" but if you beat the moderator, you're in.

Due to the negativity regarding this lovely island, I bought it cheap.

Good evening, and welcome to the World Tour. There were 28 entrants, just about a full crew. I will reveal the results in the most interesting and dramatic way possible rather than going through the questions in the order presented. This is because I am a cantankerous old geezer. Speaking of such, these are the travel companions you selected (I mean really guys, what were some of you thinking?) ...

Please note, I have done my best to be accurate in the scoring tables as we go, but you should check your score as shown in each discussion and verify that your ongoing total is right. Of course I will amend any errors we find. I have decided to post two questions at a time for a while here, since the first part of this does not separate people out very much ... here we go then ... next post will be in about 15-20 minutes (I am still working on the last two segments so I hope to get the final values in place by 9:30-10:00 pm if you can stand the tension and sheer excitement. I know I can.

    (Q10 _ Travel companion)

First order of business here is to get John Daly out of jail (again) so we can depart. Okay, having taken care of that, please note, we have 28 entrants and 25 travel companions. All were checked for their qualifications (being alive, Open Champions, or UK PMs, or US Presidents, or Oscar winning actresses). Nobody brought aboard a "ringer" but two of our winning actresses only won best supporting actress (bsa in the scoring summary). Never mind, I did not rule that out. So they are eligible.

Your keen logical mind will have deduced that for 28 entrants to choose 25 individuals, three chose two identical guests apiece. And it was John Major, Jimmy Carter and Frances McDormand who are here at the invitation of two different world tour entrants each. I leave the logistics of that up to you.

Under the rules, those four will start the world tour at a handicap of one point, a reminder (try not to doze off here) that you score ten for a unique guess and one less for every shared guess you offer (by number of shares) so for two sharing, it's nine points out of ten.

Here is the complete list of our world tour entrants, and their travel companions. I note in short form what earned them the right to join us in this mighty conquest of land, sea, air and possibly other things too. This list is chronological, later in the reveal, the points list will switch to order of points scored. But for now, this shows the order in which your entries reached my inbox.

(Too many actress possible choices to list non-selections, but nobody took a chance on such famous golfers as Tiger Woods, Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus, or Phil Mickelson -- last four winners Henrik Stenson, Jordan Speith, 2018 champ Francesco Molinari and too obvious choice Shane Lowry also left at the gate). Two of five living presidents, Clinton (his wife well whatever) and Obama were not required for this flight either. Go figure. I think each UK PM except Cameron and Johnson were selected, don't totally quote me on them being the only overlooked choices.) A golfer was probably your best bet as there are more selections available. Louis Oosthuizen even travels with his own bed (bad back).

    (Q9) Your travel budget

We might as well get this out of the way, after my fees of 85,000 euros are deducted, that leaves you with 15,000 euros plus the amount shown here (your 100,000 to 100,030 guess) and with 28 people trying to pick a unique value out of 31 available (0 to 30 being 31), you did fairly well here, only two guesses attracted three choices (100,012 and 100,027 -- each worth 8/10) while nine others had two each (100,000, 100,009, 100,010, 100,011, 100,013, 100,017, 100,023, 100,024 and 100,028 -- each worth 9/10). That left four of you with unique guesses (all low amounts, 100,003, 04, 05 and 08) worth 10/10 each. Three of those four had also scored 10/10 with their guest, so three out of 28 board the plane to the first destination with 20/20 points as shown.

The horror, the horror ... I am scoring part nine as we speak, so will post parts three and four (as designed) and come back in another few minutes after that.

    Q8 _ The airline)

Lots of airlines, lots of grounded planes ... let's find out who wants to fly which airlines.

The scoring will now switch to rank order (rather than order of entry as before) ...

I will list the airlines selected, starting with unique choices and working down to non-unique choices. As with other categories, you lose a point for every PEEHS who turns into a SHEEP.

Airlines selected by one world tour entrant ...

    Etihad -- Y0ssar1an22

    British -- Rikand

    Air Canada -- Sixtoes

Air France -- Three More Big Sleeps

    Fiji Airways -- sKeith

    FinnAir -- Bubblypop

    Singapore -- Irish Aris

    Lufthansa -- The Purple Tin

    Hainan --- Rainbow Trout

    All Nippon -- Sawduck

    Aeroflot -- Ellie Wailing Schoolmaster

    Malaysia -- Quickbeam

These airlines were selected by two or more entrants:

    (2 guesses, 9/10)

El Al --- Homer J. Fong, Dave the Rave

    Air NZ -- Mehaffey1, lassykk

Qatar --- Declan A. Walsh, Zaph

    American -- Reberetta, Gru

    KLM -- Trigger, Collie D

    (6 guesses, 5/10)

Qantas -- AS LeVarBurton, Ted_YNWA, Aaron Jennings, Yozico, Strawberry Milkshake, Heidi Heidi

The updated standings after airline selection ...

(Q 2) Lake you wanted to visit

Hello, and thank you for flying Qantas, the choice of Irish travellers. Apparently. There's a free Fosters for everyone who chose us, and you still have seven chances for redemption. This is but one of them ... we will fly over every freshwater lake you chose, as long as it made the Wikipedia top thirty list. Now about that list -- M.T. Cranium had to write his own list when he found out that wikipedia had thrown in salt lakes (expressly forbidden see the rules) so that takes us down to about number 35 on their list, if we exclude the salty ones. Now, if you did not read the fine print and chose a salty one, you're advised to buckle up, turbulence is reported just ahead of us, advises the captain whose name of course is Bruce.

So, just for your edu-ma-cation, here are the eligible lakes in order, an idea of where they might be found, and the names of those who really really wanted to see them on this tour. Should they be so lucky as to be the only one, it's worth ten points. Every name associated costs each of them a point. Here we go. Remember now, the Caspian Sea is not a fresh-water lake, it may be number one for wikipedia, but for this contest, it is dead to us. But not as dead as the Aral Sea, 90% of which dried up (whoops, Uzbek cotton crop needed the water in 1960s).

    1. Lake Superior -- Great Lakes -- Ted_YNWA, Strawberry Milkshake (9 pts)

    2. Lake Victoria --- Africa
    crocodiles a problem?

    3. Lake Huron
Great Lakes -- Y0ssar1an22, Yozico, Homer J. Fong, Heidi Heidi (7 pts)

    4. Lake Michigan -- Great Lakes -- Dave the Rave, Collie D (9 pts)

    5. Tanganyika
    Africa
    Lassykk (10 pts)

    6. Baikal
    Siberia
    Irish Aris (10 pts)

    7. Great Bear
    n. Canada --- Gru (10 pts)

    8. Malawi
    Africa
    Quickbeam (10 pts)

    9. Great Slave
    n. Canada --- Rikand, Aaron Jennings, Trigger, Rainbow Trout (7 pts)

    10. Erie (fresh? maybe not) GL --- Reberetta, Declan A Walsh (9 pts)

    11. Winnipeg
    Canada
    Sawduck (10 pts)

    12. Ontario
Great Lakes -- not that into it myself

    13. Ladoga --- east of St. P in Rus - big weekend destination for Novgorodites

(note next entry is salt, Balkhash in central Asia)

    14. Bangweulu -- Africa
    I can't find it either

    15. Vostok -- under the ice, Antarctica (dodgy, nobody chose it anyway)

    16. Onega -- southeast of Lake Ladoga -- only for the select few, so I'm told

    17. Titicaca -- Andes, South America -- The Purple Tin (10 pts)

    18. Nicaragua
    Nicaragua
sKeith, Ellie Wailing Schoolmaster (9 pts)

    19. Athabasca --- n. Canada
Three More Big Sleeps (10 pts)

    20. Taymyr
    n. Russia
    AS Levar Burton (10 pts)

    21. Reindeer Lake -- Canada
Mehaffey1 (10 pts) It thaws out just in time to freeze up

(note, Turkana in Africa, Issyk-Kul and Urmia in Asia, all salty) thank Allah nobody chose these

That gets us to 26 on the wikipedia list, five to this point are salty and aren't eligible.

The Aral Sea used to rank larger than Lake Huron back in the day, now it's just a few ponds.

    22. Vanern
    Sweden
Bubblypop, Zaph Wallander often finds corpses near here

    23. Winnipegosis -- Canada
not a disease, but a lake west of Lake Winnipeg

    24. Albert
    Africa
Sixtoes this one feeds one of the Nile headwaters, Dr Livingstone I presume?

    25. Mweru
    Africa
    sure it's lovely enough

Now we are at 30 on the list, but the next five (fresh) would count if anyone picked them.

    26. Nettilling ---- Baffin Island, Canada --- I saw this from a plane, biggest lake on an island, ice free for ten minutes in August

    27. Nipigon
north of Lake Superior -- the islands and bays are for sportsmen (also)

    28. Manitoba ---- Canada
it's a twin of Winnipegosis, much easier to say

    29. Saimaa
    Finland
Wonder if it means reindeer, then there's two

    30. Lake of the Woods -- U.S.-Canada border -- It's a maze of islands, don't go out there without a map and a valid will.

(34 on their list, Qing'hai in China, also salty).

Anyway, nobody chose those last five that got onto the list when the salt lakes dropped out.

(as would have been any other salty lake or sub-top-thirty, first of which by the way is that one Khalka, just outside Vladivostok, I'm sure you've often dreamed of spending a weekend there between Russia and China, pretty high on my bucket list after maybe Gary, Indiana? The mosquito-bear combo is to die for.)

So with the lake visited, points are now as follows:

ENTRANT ________ guest __budget __airline __lake ___ TOTAL

    Irish Aris __________10______ 10 ____ 10 ____10 ____ 40

So in the lakes round, ten had unique guesses and scored the max, eight shared seven points for being in foursomes, and everyone else was paired off (in five pairs) for nine points each. Nobody is out of the contest yet, I would say ... next reveal will be the sea, or see the bee? Here again, a lot of seas in this world, but they have to be oceanic ... uh oh ...

Just part five in this post, going to slow down a tad so I can keep ahead ... yes Canada, lots o' lakes ... maybe almost too many? Lots o' islands also. Big uninhabited freezing cold islands.

    Q6 _ Seas the moment)

The rules clearly (by my standards) stated that your choice of sea had to be part of the global ocean, not land-locked such as the Caspian Sea. After all, we can't afford to haul the luxury cruise ship we rented (dirt cheap, I must admit) across land and then leave it for who knows how long ... I refer you once again to the fine print. Here's your list of seas, any of them is valid -- no top thirty, if it exists and you can get there from an ocean, then it's all good. I was able to steer a few clear of the shoals.

Here again, I reserve the more popular choices (that you didn't want) to the end of this list.

10 points for these solo mariners ...

    Irish Sea -- Y0ssar1an22

    Davis Sea -- Zaph

    Black Sea -- Sixtoes

    Weddell Sea -- Aaron Jennings

    Molucca -- Quickbeam

    Norwegian -- Rainbow Trout

Aegean Sea -- Homer J Fong

Amundsen -- Three More Big Sleeps

    Adriatic -- Declan A Walsh

9 points for these selections ...

Coral Sea -- Mehaffey1, AS LeVar Burton

Sargasso Sea -- Rikand, The Purple Tin

    Bering -- Strawberry Milkshake, Gru

    Tyrrhenian -- sKeith, Heidi Heidi

    North Sea -- Yozico, Ted_YNWA

8 points for those who shared with two other choices ...

This is part six and not only that, the second half of the reveal. As you know that can be much nicer than the first part.

    Concentrate ...

    (Q2) _ Longest Rivers

Now it is time to go inland, on the world's greatest rivers. Just like with the lakes, I am going to force you to read the entire list. No fine print details to worry about here, first thirty on the list are good-good. So long as your guess identifies any reasonably long portion of a complex river system as named by the wikipedia list, then you're fine. (e.g., Mississippi-Missouri, either of those alone would suffice).

Sorry but two chose a famous and almost long enough river (Ganges), I would have thought it was top thirty also, but apparently not. I did try to vet the entries for errors, but like I said blah blah passenger assumes the risk blah blah. Also it's not part of the Brahmaputra, they try to form one river at the mouths but I am told by very reliable sources (experts like) that they are separate river systems (they certainly come at the Bay of Bengal with a vengeance from two different directions anyway). For you two, I will put totals in brackets that represent what you would have scored at any stage from now on, had we counted your guess (nine points).

I will be happy if I stay awake until question ten, this was a lot more work than I figured it might be (rookie mistake) ...

Anyway, on to part seven I think it would be, now we're getting into the back stretch jostling and shoving part.

    (Q3) _ Largest Islands

Time now to go island hopping, and yes it cannot be Australia or Greenland, cleared that up with one or two of you, anyone seen John Daly since we left? Or that actress? The pretty one?

I'm afraid to say that you must suffer through one more list of thirty and for the umpteenth time I will mention Greenland is verboten from this whole conversation. Frankly, I don't believe there's an island under that ice, just lots and lots of ice, and if it all melted, the place would hardly be green anyway, so I'm done with that whole business, sue me Eric the Red (who probably wasn't red).

So if we totally ignore Greenland and take the wiki-list from 2 to 31 as being really 1 to 30, these are the possible guesses and how you fit into this complicated almost insoluble puzzle. Well it's nowhere near insoluble, I am just waiting for the kettle to boil as I need coffee and I need it bad or this whole 8 p.m. reveal is going to be an 8:30 hey sorry I'm late which I know from past experience is not a good idea with pro golfers and presidents, actresses maybe can handle it.

We were talking about islands ...

    (Q4) _ Largest cities

We need a bit of night-life, not sure if these thirty largest cities can help or not. Wikipedia's list had mind-numbing variations on the theme but I mentioned "metropolitan area population" as the criterion. Will be somewhat lenient here as the list contains some blanks in that department for cities that obviously have more people than they can shake a stick at.
The only real question marks in this list of cities you provided would be London which is a bit lower in the table than 30th but as I count up metropolitan totals as opposed to UN estimates which seems to form the basis for ranks, London makes it into the top 30 there, and also Santiago (Chile) which is even more marginal, but could be in the top thirty in the category I specified, so I am going to count all entries as valid.
You know the drill, it’s ten points if you are alone with your selection, nine if you share with one other, eight for two others. The points are shown after your name(s). A new subtotal will follow.

    (Q5) _ Football match

As to the football question, I have found scoring this to be an enormous challenge without checking the history of every football team I may or may not have heard of, so as long as I cannot spot any obvious error in your choice (as to countries that made the final four of the World Cup) then I'll give you a pass on how, when and where they won a championship, sure there's so many ways almost anyone could do it almost by accident (thinking of Leicester City) -- obviously top of a league table, winning the national Cup final, maybe even qualifying for Europe, or whatever -- let's get this cruise back to port, we've already lost three golfers, a former president, and a serving one too.

At some point we switched from the airplane to a boat, I don't know, very confusing these world tours.

The thread will remain open forever in case anyone wants to challenge any aspects of scoring, I will promise to give it my divided attention but my main focus is on spending the 28 times 85,000 euros which I think is going to work out pretty high up there, just at a guess, over a million anyway (math not my strong suit) ... one million dollars that's for sure, right Donald? Donald? Anyone seen the President?

(I did check one or two of these and all seems legit)

Scoring here is mainly all 9s and 10s ... except that Real Madrid was chosen by four and worth only seven points (and a hundred billion euros) ...

So now we change the paradigm (in mid-flight, who wants to join me on the wing?) ... and look for a popular answer instead.

    How ridiculous is that?

Good question, here's the answer to all that. I had no idea this was going to happen until it did ... could be sorting this out with the UN and various other stakeholders for many days to come.

Now for that final and perhaps decisive category, SHEEP to the front please ... this one depends on your choice being popular. Can you imagine it? I have simplified some guesses here so basically it's either a country, city or well known attraction, if one said Eiffel Tower and another one said Paris, same thing in my mind, or Egypt and pyramids, Canada and mind-numbing boredom of the lockdown extending, wait a minute nobody's going to choose that. Surprised nobody chose Ystad what with the great popularity of Wallander and the obviously liberal attitudes of the beautiful women and handsome men who live there (supposedly). But it is fictional I suppose.

Here we have a very clustered result. Half of you chose Paris and I think almost without exception the wording was either Paris -- Eiffel Tower or just Eiffel Tower. So that half of the field will score the maximum of ten points. It should be 14 points but I don't think it will affect the outcome (I wasn't expecting this question would score more than ten, were you?) ...

Two locations had two votes each (New York City and Egypt) so those four entrants will share two points each, while ten other locations had just one big fan (and one big point).

^^ points without Ganges d.q. (nine additional)
    (just for interest)

** points without Maui d.q. +10 (just for interest)

    ________________________________________________

As it happens, none of the d.q. situations really cost anyone the top prize ... which is good.

This contest was fun to organize and score, hope you enjoyed it.

I will return to the thread after I get some rest, kind of extended my day from yesterday into today and not too sure what to plan next, will return when I can deal with any requests or amendments that people might discover, as I feel like there has to be at least one blunder here somewhere.

As to mixing PEEHS and SHEEP in the same contest, was that a good thing or a bad thing? I am leaning towards bad thing, but hey, in the advanced sciences, you have to blow up a few grad students before you can get that Nobel prize.

Thank you for being my collateral damage. Still wondering what happened to Daly.
