    Hi.
I'm looking for recommendations for a storage back up for family photos and videos
I've about 400 gb to back up. They are on a couple of pc's
I was thinking of an ssd drive but wondered ,should I consider sd ,micro sd, or usb sticks as well.
    Considerations are cost and reliability.
Also any software that would do it for me easily.
    Thanks

For photo's cloud would be my number 1 choice as on drives they can get lost plus you can access from anywhere. Something like Google/icloud or onedrive are high quality and safe choices. If you back them to a drive best practice would be to back it up to 2 drives in case of failure.

I would select 1 USB SSD drive for performance at 1TB and 1 USB HD drive at 1TB as these are cheaper than SDD but dog slow.

If you have windows you can drag and drop the photos easily enough without software.

SSD is unnecessary. The principle benefits of SSD are performance based, which don't apply here (you might be able to do the initial transfer quicker, but not significantly so). The only other benefit would be that SSD drives withstand shocks better e.g. if you dropped the drive. Again, unless you have a particular requirement for that, it doesn't apply.

Also, it's not "cloud or local", it's "cloud and local". If you don't have at least three copies of your data, including one off-site, it's data that you don't care about. Read about the 3-2-1 Backup rule: https://www.nakivo.com/blog/3-2-1-backup-rule-efficient-data-protection-strategy/
